WOLSTAT: Ibaka was massive in Raptors sweep of Nets — Toronto Sun

Serge Ibaka didn’t have to start to finish off the Brooklyn Nets.

The Raptors big man had his third strong game in the four first-round contests on Sunday, completely dominating the Nets at both ends of the floor.

WOLSTAT: Ibaka was massive in Raptors sweep of Nets

A game after hauling down 13 rebounds off the bench, three behind Bismack Biyombo’s reserve record, Ibaka had 15. He also scored 27 points, which would have been a new franchise scoring mark for a reserve, except Norman Powell bested him with 29 as the team set an NBA bench mark with 100 points from the pine. Ibaka hit each of his three three-point attempts for the second game in a row and Brooklyn had no answers for him.

It was the fourth time Ibaka had scored at least 20 in a non-starting role, extending his Raptors record, and he was the first player with at least 27 and 15 off the bench since Mychal Thompson in 1988.

Ibaka collected his fifth playoff double-double as a Raptor, which tied him with Chris Bosh (who granted did it in far fewer games) and two behind Pascal Siakam, who also posted a double-double on Sunday.

Heading into Game 4, his best of the series, Toronto had already been 27.1 points per 100 possessions better with Ibaka on the floor compared to when he was on the bench against the Nets.

Ibaka even handed out eight assists in the series — many of them quite pretty helpers — against only three turnovers.

Starting centre Marc Gasol was pretty average against Brooklyn for the most part, and much more will be expected out of him in the next round against the Boston Celtics. But it’s unclear if that’s a good matchup, since Boston is small and quick. It’s quite possible that Ibaka will be called on quite a bit in what projects to be a razor-thin series.

Ibaka said post-game that Boston presents many challenges.

“We know they’re a great team. They’re playing one of the best basketball right now, and they have confidence,” he said. “We know it’s not going to be easier. We have to come to play our best basketball against them.”

The Celtics had their way with Toronto earlier this month in Orlando, with Ibaka turning in perhaps his worst game of the year, but the big man was decent-to-excellent in the other three meetings, though Boston won three of the four.

Ibaka will become an unrestricted free agent whenever this season ends, so it’s possible these are his final games as a Raptor. If that’s the case, he will have left quite the legacy with his big playoff moments. Ibaka hit some massive shots and made some huge defensive stands against the likes of Philadelphia, Milwaukee and Golden State. He’ll surely be called on again as these playoffs continue.

SIXERS FALL SHORT

When Kawhi Leonard’s miraculous four-bounce shot fell last year, the Raptors were elated to survive what would end up being their toughest series on the way to the NBA title.

With young superstars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, plus Jimmy Butler, JJ Redick and Tobias Harris, Philadelphia seemed to be on the verge of being a major force for years to come. But much like when the Raptors lost to the Sixers back in 2001 with the future looking so bright for Toronto before it all fell apart, Philadelphia seems poised to be going down that road too.

They meekly bowed out against Boston on Sunday, getting swept. Head coach Brett Brown is expected to be fired. Embiid has once again said he needs to be better and Simmons is trying to get healthy. Oh, and they project to have one of the biggest payrolls in league history next year, despite letting Butler and Redick go and oddly adding big man Al Horford.

Not great, Bob.

Meanwhile, Boston looks great and Jaylen Brown said after the sweep when asked if the Celtics had a better team than last year’s group that fell in five games in Round 2 to Milwaukee: “I think we’re a better team and I think we’ll prove it.”

The Sixers probably think they’re a better team than they showed too, but don’t expect them to get a chance to prove that. There will be changes coming.

LUKA MAGIC

In Sunday’s thrilling overtime win against Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers, young superstar Luka Doncic became only the third player with a 40-point, 15-rebound, 10-assist playoff game. Charles Barkley did it in 1993 for Phoenix, Oscar Robertson in 1963 with Cincinnati.

Doncic also joined Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Kawhi and Damian Lillard as the only players to score at least 40 in a post-season game and hit a buzzer-beater, according to Basketball-reference. Only Magic Johnson posted consecutive playoff triple-doubles at a younger age than Doncic.

Oh, and Doncic did it on a severely sprained ankle.

It never made sense that three teams decided to pass on the Slovenian sensation when given the chance and it never will.

AROUND THE RIM

Paul George is not having much of a series against Dallas. He’s averaging just 15.3 points per game on 29% shooting … Toronto improved to 10-7 in potential series closeout games and now only the Los Angeles Clippers and Minnesota Timberwolves have never swept a four-game series … NBA coach of the year Nick Nurse now has a 20-8 playoff record and will tie Dwane Casey for the team record with his next win.

Giants designate Pence for assignment, get Rays’ Robertson

Associated PressAug 23, 2020, 4:52 PM EDT

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants cut ties with outfielder Hunter Pence on Sunday, ending a second stint with the fan favorite that didn’t go nearly as well as his first.

Pence, 37, was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for utility man Daniel Robertson, who was acquired earlier in the day from the Tampa Bay Rays for cash or a player to be named later.

Pence was a fiery emotional leader for the Giants from 2012-2018, helping anchor teams that won the World Series in 2012 and 2014.

After making the All-Star team with Texas last season, he returned to San Francisco in February on a one-year, $3 million contract but hit just .096 with two homers and six RBI in 17 games.

Robertson will report to the Giants’ alternate training site in Sacramento. The team also reinstated reliever Sam Coonrod from the 10-day injured list.

NURSE NAMED TOP NBA COACH

NURSE NAMED NBA COACH OF THE YEAR

The Toronto Raptors announced Saturday that Nick Nurse has been named the NBA’s Coach of the Year for the 2019-20 season. Nurse guided the Raptors to a 53-19 record during the regular season (second best in the NBA) and set a franchise-record with a .736 winning percentage.

“When you see Nick on the sidelines, that’s who he is as a person. Relaxed, but so hard-working. Creative and dynamic. Always setting the tone for our team – attacking our next championship, rather than defending our last,” Raptors President Masai Ujiri said. “That is who Nick is, that is why we believe in him. His journey to this tremendous honour has been a long one – we are so happy to see him recognized this way.”

Highlighting Toronto’s season was a franchise-record 15 straight victories (Jan. 15 – Feb. 10). During this stretch, the Raptors averaged 121.2 points and shot .504 (672-1333) from the field. The winning streak was the longest in Canadian sports history (NBA, NHL, MLB, MLS and CFL).

Nurse earned Eastern Conference Coach of the Month honours twice during the 2019-20 campaign – January and games played in October/November – and coached Team Giannis at the NBA All-Star Game in Chicago.

The Raptors finished the regular season leading the NBA in points allowed (106.5 ppg) and opponent three-point field goal percentage (.337) and ranked second in opponent field goal percentage (.428). Toronto also held its opponent to fewer than 100 points in 22 games – most in the NBA.

On the offensive end, the Raptors averaged 112.8 points (second most in team history) and a franchise-record 13.8 three-point field goals per game. This despite their top five leading scorers all missing at least 10 games due to injury or illness. Toronto had three players average at least six more points this season than they did in 2018–19: Norman Powell (+7.4 ppg, 8.6 to 16.0), Fred VanVleet (+6.6 ppg, 11.0 to 17.6) and Pascal Siakam (+ 6.0 ppg, 16.9 to 22.9).

After finishing the season restart in Orlando with a 7-1 record, Toronto also extended its streak to 24 consecutive calendar months with a winning record (Feb. 2017 – Aug. 2020). The streak is the longest in franchise history and the longest current streak in the NBA.

A graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, Nurse was named the ninth head coach in Raptors history on June 14, 2018, taking the job after five years as an assistant coach with the team. On June 13, 2019, he became just the ninth rookie head coach in league history to win an NBA Championship. Nurse has led the club to a 111-43 (.721) regular season record in two seasons.

Coach of the Year voting from a global panel of sportswriters and broadcasters was based on games played from the start of the regular season through March 11 and did not include “seeding games,” which took place July 30 – Aug. 14 for the 22 teams participating in the season restart.

Nurse is the third coach in franchise history to win the award, joining Dwane Casey (2017-18) and Sam Mitchell (2006-07).

RAPTORS BLOG: The legend of Fred VanVleet continues to grow — Toronto Sun

The legend of Fred VanVleet continues to grow. His struggles at points of last year’s playoffs seem a long, long time ago now.

– VanVleet is now shooting 42.6% on three-pointers in the playoffs since the start of last year’s run. Incredibly, that includes his low point, 1-for-14 struggles from beyond the arc in the seven game series against Philadelphia.

RAPTORS BLOG: The legend of Fred VanVleet continues to grow

– How scorching is VanVleet right now? Only Stephen Curry and Paul George had hit more threes over the first two games of a playoff series over the last 10 years and VanVleet nailed six more in Game 3.

.@FredVanVleet is just ridiculous pic.twitter.com/MDyUyV1Sru— Toronto Raptors (@Raptors) August 21, 2020

– Minnesota and the Los Angeles Clippers are now the only NBA franchises to never go up 3-0. Toronto also improved to 10-10 all-time in the third game of a playoff series.

– Serge Ibaka had his second 13-rebound game off the bench for the Raptors in the playoffs. Only Bismack Biyombo (16) has grabbed more without starting. Ibaka also had his third 20-point or more game off the bench with the Raptors, more than any other player (VanVleet has done it twice).

Ibaka had his fourth playoff double-double as a Raptor, tying Charles Oakley and moving one behind Chris Bosh. Jonas Valanciunas had 17 for the franchise lead.

Chef is feasting – 18p / 12r pic.twitter.com/OXofWcdVqh— Toronto Raptors (@Raptors) August 21, 2020

– You have to feel for interim Nets head coach Jacque Vaughn who has done what he can with such an undermanned lineup. Brooklyn lost Joe Harris, adding to the long list of unavailable talent, and looked completely overmatched by the deep Raptors in the third game of the series.

– Brooklyn didn’t even manage to score on two straight possessions until nearly midway through the second quarter. And just when the Nets seemed to have some life — like their late in the half three-pointer — VanVleet had to completely take the wind out of their sales by banking in a ridiculous heave to end the half.

“Overall, when you don’t have all the components of your card, it puts stress on different parts,” Vaughn said.

“It put extra stress on individuals to make plays that they might not have had to make if Joe (Harris) was here.”

– Credit too to Nets big man Jarrett Allen who worked his butt off all game despite not getting to see much of the ball on offence. Allen only took two shots all game (leading to four free throw attempts), but still chased down 17 rebounds. Only Giannis Antetkounmpo, Dwight Howard (three times), Ben Wallace, Marcus Camby and Draymond Green have had more rebounds against the Raptors in the post-season. Each of those guys attempted at least 10 shots in their big rebounding games.

“They pack the paint. They force you to kick it out to guys,” Nets guard Tyler Johnson said of Toronto’s elite protect the paint defence. “They’re usually bringing three or four guys into the paint. We got into a timeout in the third quarter and I looked at J.A. (Jarrett Allen)and told him how unselfish he was being throughout the entire game because a guy of his caliber could easily be frustrated and angry and be more demonstrative about not getting field goal attempts, but the guy continued to screen, continued to get guys open, continued to get offensive boards. You know, you can find yourself just going up and taking shots off of those, (but) he continued to kick it out, continued to make the right basketball play,” Johnson said.

Allen is a very good young player and it’s going to be a shame when politics put him on the bench so that Kevin Durant/Kyrie Irving pal DeAndre Jordan, who is no longer close to the player Allen is, gets to be the guy in the middle.

Lowry could have been given a star for his strong outing, just as Ibaka could have gotten one last game. We’re evening things up by going Ibaka for this one.

GREG VANNEY – HEAD COACH, TORONTO FC

On the differences between Tuesday’s game vs tonight’s game….

The difference from Tuesday’s game is they sat off a lot more, they have five in the back line, it was our job to try and move those guys out of the back line and create some spaces to be able to attack. We did an ok job at times but times we were a little bit too impatient. It slowed the game down and then you have to be really patient to try and move people around. Still, it was a good performance, we stayed responsible, we did what we had to do, and it would have been nice to have finished one or two of the good chances we had.

On staying focused for a year and staying undefeated…

Our group is pretty mature, we ‘ve got some really young guys who have come through the academy and some veteran guys who have played a lot of games together. A lot of things click into natural gear quickly. Guys were motivated to play coming in from the stoppage and after getting to the final last year. There is a lot of motivation in our group to be successful this year.

On Altidore’s substitution at halftime, just a precaution….

It is a quick turnaround for Jozy, having played minimal minutes down in Florida and to have a turnaround in three days is not easy. We wanted to get him 45 minutes and to get the lead in the first 45 minutes. We wanted to start off where we left off from the last game. We’ll get him prepared for the next game.

RICHIE LARYEA – DEFENDER, TORONTO FC

How has TFC maintained consistency and kept a 17-game undefeated streak…

It comes down to us being a resilient group, this group fights to the end, this is a very big club in this league and guys want to compete for trophies every single year. We want to show why this club is where it is and why it has been for the last couple years. I think it is about us taking ownership on our own and making sure we are doing our own individual workouts.

On his goal…..

It was a good build up down the right side and I was pinching in to help with the transition and the ball was getting in the box and I didn’t have anyone near me so I was able to push forward a little bit more and I was able to get the ball in front of me and landed nicely for me and I was able to put it in the back post.

QUENTIN WESTBERG – GOALKEEPER, TORONTO FC

On how the team is playing in front of him in the last two games…

I think we have done well, and we have done well individually and collectively. We have been playing together for a while now and have established a good identity. I think it is a great collective effort. I think our playing values and our principles are very well established. We have a lot of the ball and create a lot of chances and are great defensively.

On playing at BMO without fans…

It is a shame to be here without fans as we know how special this place is with our fans. We try to respect our stadium and have a responsibility to perform well here, we have to perform well everywhere but it is very particular here to all of us. BMO is a strong part of TFC’s identity and is a very hard place to come with or without fans.
