POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On tonight’s game:
A lot of good things for a team to build confidence to find a way to get back into a game. Joseph Woll was unbelievable tonight. We kind of hung him out to dry early in the game, especially in the first period. He made some really good saves. It’s not like the goals were weak goals, we just were giving up too much. We finally found our game. Joe continued to battle for us and give us confidence to come back in it, and the offence came. The guys started to play the right way and do the things that needed to find those goals.

On the first period timeout with Toronto down 4-0:
It didn’t feel like I needed to yell too much. I think they knew themselves that the effort wasn’t there. The execution of the game plan that we had followed the day before that brought us success was not being executed. So just a reminder of a few points of what we needed to do to get back to playing our game. And I could sense that they were all disappointed in how they started and they started to turn it on from there.

On Joseph Duszak, Mac Hollowell and Scott Pooley’s performance tonight:
Great. Any time you can get depth guys that come up in the organization have huge impacts for you in a game is great signs of the development process here within this organization. Really happy for their success tonight in helping our team.

On Adam Brooks’ tying goal and leaving in overtime due to injury:
Huge goal…Everybody loves him. You can tell that all his teammates are rooting for him every day. He’s such a good person. He brings a lot of positive life and energy in the room with everybody so it’s good to see everybody else’s reaction and how excited they were for him and that goal. In terms of injury, it’s too early for me to know or have gotten a report on what’s going on.

On what has led to Mason Marchment’s recent success:
Get to the net. He’s really good at net-front presence and just getting around the paint and being difficult and strong and big to play down there and plays with a little bit of an edge. He does a good job getting teams off their game so he gets to the net and guys are more focused on him than actually playing the game and it gives him more time and space to make plays.

GARRETT WILSON (1 ASSIST)

On what Toronto did differently in the final two periods:
We just played with a little more urgency. We knew we had to take a couple risks to get some offence going and it paid off for us and Woll made some huge saves for us back at the final line of defence there. We fed off it and we were able to get one on the power play. PK was great, so it was just a nice team win there.

On Egor Korshkov’s overtime goal:
Yeah, I think he only scores highlight reels. It’d be nice to see him get a garbage one here every once in a while and make us feel a little bit better. He’s a skilled player, big body, and he’s a hell of a player.

MARLIES 4, BELLEVILLE 2: “It’s really big, it’s really important. It’s a really big month for us. Thought the team was building a lot of confidence prior to these three games. They saw a lot of the good stuff they were doing and like we’ve talked a lot about, not getting the results. Really happy for them now to be getting the results and start reaping the rewards of the hard work of the last five, six weeks.” –GREG MOORE.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On tonight’s game:
It was probably one of the best performances for our team sticking to the game plan and being disciplined within it. Kas did a heck of a job in the first period, keeping us in the game and letting the team find it and build their confidence. Then the second period, we had three, four, five shifts in a row where we were in the o-zone, we wore the team down a bit and started to build momentum.

On building the team’s confidence with recent success:
It’s really big, it’s really important. It’s a really big month for us. Thought the team was building a lot of confidence prior to these three games. They saw a lot of the good stuff they were doing and like we’ve talked a lot about, not getting the results. Really happy for them now to be getting the results and start reaping the rewards of the hard work of the last five, six weeks.

On how the team kept momentum with 11 penalties called during the game:
Yeah, it’s really hard, even another reason to be proud of the group for staying in it, staying with it and not allowing the back-and-forth penalty calls to throw them off their game or lose momentum when we had it.

On a strong third period effort:
Well those are lessons learned from the losses we’ve had in the past. They’re starting to figure out what is needed and what it takes, a full 60 minutes and how to manage a game with a lead in the third period and they’re starting to execute.

NEXT GAME:

February 15 vs Belleville – 4:00 p.m. ET
February 17 vs Binghamton – 3:00 p.m. ET (Scotiabank Arena)

MARLIES 5, LAVAL 2: “The team is starting to see the results of the work and labour they’ve been putting in for the last few weeks. Things have been coming along and they found another way to play for sixty minutes. Our D corps was great tonight. Really solid, really good gaps, played well from the middle of the rink, we didn’t give up a ton. More importantly in the D zone we were really strong closing out and stalling them out not allowing them to go low to high using their point shots, which is a big part of their game.” –GREG MOORE.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On the team grabbing four of six points this weekend:
We’re very happy. The team is starting to see the results of the work and labour they’ve been putting in for the last few weeks. Things have been coming along and they found another way to play for sixty minutes. Our D corps was great tonight. Really solid, really good gaps, played well from the middle of the rink, we didn’t give up a ton. More importantly in the D zone we were really strong closing out and stalling them out not allowing them to go low to high using their point shots, which is a big part of their game.

On wins from their goaltenders:
We’re going to need both of those guys to be on their game to have a good push here for the rest of the season. Kas came in, played a heck of a game, kept us in it. Looked really confident, looked really calm in net and when you have a goalie showing those signs it gives confidence to the team to play well.

MASON MARCHMENT (1 GOAL)

On scoring six goals in three games:
Couple of lucky shots, couple of good shots and a couple of good passes from my linemates. Petey was finding me all weekend and even Brooksy and Kivi at the end there. It was just a good weekend overall.

On the team’s goaltending:
Yeah, they really stepped up this weekend. We trust them back there and we have full faith that they’re going to shut the door when we need them to. It was a full team effort I feel and it was just good to see.

MATT READ (1 GOAL)

On how the team played in this weekend’s three-in-three:
I think all three games were a step in the right direction. Last month kind of got away from us and I think all three games we played, I wouldn’t say the full sixty every game but we certainly made strides and found our confidence and I don’t think there are too many teams that can play with us when we play such a full game and team game out there.

NEXT GAME:

February 14 at Belleville – 7:00 p.m. ET
February 15 vs Belleville – 4:00 p.m. ET
February 17 vs Binghamton – 3:00 p.m. ET (Scotiabank Arena)
February 19 vs Binghamton – 11:00 a.m. ET
February 22 at Laval – 3:00 p.m. ET

MARLIES 4, ROCHESTER 0: “You could tell the energy in the locker room. The guys were excited to play tonight, they can feel the momentum they’re starting to gain in games. Even though the results haven’t been there, they’re very proud of the work they’ve put in. The start was great. It was a good opportunity for us to come out and gain some momentum.” — GREG MOORE.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On today’s start with Marchment scoring 52 seconds into the game:
Yeah, that’s something that we had struggled with in the stretch here. You could tell the energy in the locker room. The guys were excited to play tonight, they can feel the momentum they’re starting to gain in games. Even though the results haven’t been there, they’re very proud of the work they’ve put in. The start was great. It was a good opportunity for us to come out and gain some momentum.

On what he likes about Nic Petan’s line with Kenny Agostino and Mason Marchment:
Just their compete level. They seemed to build some chemistry. Marchment builds a lot of time and space for guys. He gets under the skin of the opponent and that opens up time and space for Kenny and Petey to make plays and I think there’s a good combination of skill there.

On the shutout helping Joseph Woll’s confidence going forward:
Huge. He came up big tonight. You could just tell his body language was really calm, he was assertive, he was tracking the puck really well. It was a solid game for him.

On Adam Brooks not dressing and Nic Petan leaving the game:
We’ll see. No real status or timeline on either of them. Nothing major but we definitely miss those guys if they’re not in our lineup, they’re big players. But we’ll see in the future.

On Kevin Gravel’s play today (first game since Nov. 9):
I was really surprised. That was my first opportunity to even watch him play in a game. It’s been a long road, we’re really proud of the work he’s put in. He’s a great person. For the team to get a win, for him to play the way he did, to get the minutes he did, is a really fun story to see and we’re really proud of him.

KEVIN GRAVEL (1 ASSIST)

On his first game since Nov. 9:
It was good. It was good to get back out there. It was another game of the year for a lot of guys but for me, it kind of meant a little more. Kind of in an unknown position there for a while in terms of health so you don’t really know what’s going to happen. It felt good to be out there and then to contribute to the team and be back on the ice to play a game again.

On not playing through a difficult stretch of games for the Marlies:
Yeah it’s hard to watch. Obviously you want to be there for the guys and you want to be able to work through that with them and help the guys out. You’re close as a team and you go through the good times together and you go through the bad times together. You can ask anyone, they don’t like watching, whether it’s one game or three months. It’s always tough to be on the sidelines. It was good to get back, it was good to be on the ice again.

On Joseph Woll’s performance:
It was really good, really good. Especially the first period there, they had close to I think 20 shots on goal in the first. Kind of bought us a little bit of time there and let us get a chance to get our feet underneath us. We got the lead there and he made a couple of ten-bell saves for us on the PP and the PK as well. He was great for us. It’s good to be able to shut the door for him and get him that shutout and have his back there too.

JOSEPH WOLL (SECOND CAREER SHUTOUT, 38 SAVES)

On the significance of today’s shutout:
I think it was big for me but I think it was really huge for the team. I think we’ve been on a little bit of a downward spiral lately so I think a big win like that against a good team is something we can really build on.

On how he has stayed focused through difficult games:
I think the biggest thing is keeping with your routine. I think it’s easy to start changing a lot of things when you’re going through some adversity but for me and for the team it’s just been come in every day and keep getting better and sticking with it.

On Mason Marchment:
He’s been awesome. He’s one of those players that you love to have on your team and probably hate to play against so he can do it all really. He’s scoring a lot of big goals for us, he’s creating some havoc around the net. I love to see it.

BELLEVILLE 7, MARLIES 4: “I’d say today’s the most frustrating loss we’ve had, not that they’re not all frustrating but I mean Agostino, Petan, Marchment, from power play to 5-on-5, those guys gained a lot of momentum for themselves and for the team, they had a huge impact on this game. I thought Duszak came in and had a really good game for us. Hollowell, Kivihalme – there were some good efforts today, some guys stepped up for the team. There were again moments of the game we controlled. At this point, it’s really frustrating, it’s difficult. We need to start seeing results.” –GREG MOORE.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On solid individual efforts despite loss:
I’d say today’s the most frustrating loss we’ve had, not that they’re not all frustrating but I mean Agostino, Petan, Marchment, from power play to 5-on-5, those guys gained a lot of momentum for themselves and for the team, they had a huge impact on this game. I thought Duszak came in and had a really good game for us. Hollowell, Kivihalme – there were some good efforts today, some guys stepped up for the team. There were again moments of the game we controlled. At this point, it’s really frustrating, it’s difficult. We need to start seeing results.

On quality chances increasing for Toronto as the game developed:
They did for us today. First period was a little slow. It was an even score after one. I knew we had better as a team and they came out and responded in the second period. I thought we out chanced them to 2-to-1 in that period and carried into the third then things just started to fall apart for us. There’s no excuses, we’ve got to start finding a way to get wins.

On whether this game is a learning experience or should be thrown away ahead of tomorrow’s game:
Every game’s a learning experience. Every game at some point we have to put behind us. We’ve got to chisel away at getting better. I do think if we look at our segment of games, last six, seven games, there has been better hockey played. We’ll continue to trend, we’ll continue to get better and we’ve got to find a way to go on a run.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On tonight’s game:
Five-on-five, I was really happy with how we played against one of the top teams in the League, which I think we are as well. We went toe-to-toe with them. Special teams let us down tonight.

On the team’s placement in the overall standings:
That’s focusing on results, which are important. If we’re still looking back at the last four games before tonight, like I had mentioned in previous interviews, we’re starting to build a lot more consistency in our 5-on-5 play. I had mentioned prior as well that special teams had plagued us a little bit, tonight was a part of that again. There’s still positives to build on. It doesn’t happen overnight, we’re going to keep going.

On why Jeremy Bracco did not play tonight:
Away for personal reasons.

FORWARD GARRETT WILSON

On tonight’s game:
I thought 5-on-5 we were generating a lot of chances, a lot of looks. We didn’t capitalize on enough of them. Special teams, we’ve got to be better. It’s losing us hockey games not capitalizing on the power play, not shutting down the PK and we’ve got to find a way to get that going so we can start climbing the standings.

On not capitalizing on two consecutive power plays in the second period:
It’s huge. It’s a turning point. We had a five minute power play there and then a four right after. We just weren’t executing and we had a couple different looks there on the unit so we’ve just got to get back to the drawing board here. We know we’ve still got a good opportunity here this month so we’ve got to start winning some hockey games and doing our job and hopefully climb the standings as fast as we can.

On the message to the team as a leader in the room:
You’ve got to forget about this one. It’s behind us now, and just look for the next game. We know it’s not going to be easy. Teams come in and they’re ready to play us. Toronto’s been known to be a good team for the last five, ten years and teams get up for those games so we’ve got to find a way to bring our A-game and start winning some hockey games.

NEXT GAME:

February 9 vs Laval – 4:00 p.m. ET

February 15 vs Belleville – 4:00 p.m. ET

CHARLOTTE 4, MARLIES 3: “This team is still fighting to find that consistent play and we had to have known and we talked about the response they were going to have after yesterday and the first period was a little lethargic. But some games in the past after getting down the team had a hard time coming back and generating. Today is a good sign of them moving in the right direction and they competed, they found their way back into the game and they gave themselves a chance to win.” GREG MOORE.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On Toronto’s third period:
Yeah, we saw the ceiling of what our team was. We controlled the period. There wasn’t a lot of opportunity or time or space for them to make plays. A lot of good signs. Not the start we want, got better as the game went on. We started to find that the third period was what we want to see consistently. This team is still fighting to find that consistent play and we had to have known and we talked about the response they were going to have after yesterday and the first period was a little lethargic. But some games in the past after getting down the team had a hard time coming back and generating. Today is a good sign of them moving in the right direction and they competed, they found their way back into the game and they gave themselves a chance to win.

On Kasimir Kaskisuo replacing Joseph Woll:
Just didn’t really like how the couple goals went in. Kaskisuo gave us a great game yesterday. We’re trying to build some momentum for the team and wanted to put him in there to stabilize things for our group.

On Timothy Liljegren (1 goal, 1 assist):
He might have been our best player on the ice tonight. He generates a lot. His skating and his ability to get pucks back transitions the game. He’s an elite player who’s starting to find his way and he has been for some time but tonight he definitely showcased that.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On the team being down a goal and pushing back for the win:
For sure the response after going down by a goal. The break was good to us. You could tell the energy and the excitement for the players to be back on the ice. Got a little mental refresher and really, a lot of how we played tonight I thought we played like in Cleveland as well, we just didn’t get the results. In our staff’s mind, we put together three good games. Hopefully we can continue to find that consistency.

On Egor Korshkov (1 goal):
Big size, a lot of skill. He’s an interesting, fun player to watch. He just sheds people off as they approach him. He’s great protecting the puck and possessing. Nice little play he made down low for his goal. He brings an element to our team and some depth.

On Mac Hollowell (first career AHL goal):
He’s a very skilled player. We’ve seen a lot of it. It hasn’t resulted in a goal such as that. He’s such a good skater, he positions himself offensively and defensively really well through the middle of the rink, uses his stick to his advantage, which he’ll have to with a little bit undersized defenceman but he makes up for it with his ability to skate and position himself off of defenders.

FORWARD SCOTT POOLEY (2 GOALS)

On tonight’s win against Charlotte:
I think we just did a lot of the little details right that were kind of hurting us. It was nice to get home after the long road trip and after the break and be able to get back into our routine and I think that helped a lot. We were happy to put a full 60 on the ice and obviously we got the result we wanted.

On what the coaching staff’s message was going into tonight’s game:
Just keep it simple really. Coming back from break, hands might be a little rusty, guys get their legs back under them and stuff. But like I said in games prior, we liked the process, we liked the way we played and we just didn’t get the results we wanted, so we wanted to put a full 60 on the ice and we knew we’d get the result and I think we showed that tonight.

On whether confidence or experience has led to increased scoring:
Yeah, I think obviously confidence is huge for any player so to get the first one and be able to play a little more loose and have the confidence to shoot the puck. There’s lucky bounces and I was a lucky recipient, just put it on net and it went in so, there’s no secret to it or anything but I’ll take it.

NEXT GAME:

February 1 vs Charlotte – 4:00 p.m. ET

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On what improvements he saw from Toronto:
There was a lot of improvement. You can definitely look at our past and what the record has been as of late and fall back on that. But if you just look at this one game, the team put in a great effort. I thought the team really competed hard, much better in our d-zone, our fifty-fifty battles, our o-zone looked great tonight, got a lot of interior shots something’s that we’ve been missing in the past. The players really executed a lot that we asked of them today.

On Matt Read (6 shots):
He probably had four or five grade A chances. He really showed up in the game, helped our team find some momentum, some energy and he was one of the guys that really got interior and helped threaten.

On Pontus Aberg (3 assists):
He’s a big part of our team, he’s a top-six forward. He has a ton of ability and talent. When he brings it consistently with his effort and his compete and what he did tonight, he’s a heck of a hockey player.

On the AHL All-Star break:
I think every team in this league needs a break. It’s a long season. We’ve been through a lot lately, battling some consistency stuff. This break will be good for us. We’ll come back from it fresh. We’ll get back to our routine and back to building details and habits that we want to build and we’ll find positives out of tonight and what the team did.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On whether he saw improvements in Toronto’s play tonight despite the loss:
I think for a lot of people you could say that results are needed, we’ve been working together through a lot as a group. There was a lot of good stuff in today’s game. Again we’ve been talking about the starts of our games, again today was not good enough. We lost the game in the first five, ten minutes. We’ll keep reiterating that but we can’t expect to come out that slow. The lack of intensity in the D-zone is a problem, it got better as the game went on but we’ve got to be able to manufacture that from the start.

On the lack of intensity in the defensive zone:
It’s a mindset. As soon as there’s a fifty-fifty puck, we’ve got to close, we’ve got to separate somebody. We can’t get beat off the walls and back to our net, we’re not protecting our net, we’re not boxing out, we’re not getting sticks and when there is a chance for us to be strong and win a battle along the wall, we’ve got to come up with those pucks. We just haven’t built a mindset in our D-zone to do that yet.

On whether defensive zone issues have impacted Toronto’s penalty kill:
Yes and no. It’s a little bit different. The concept’s the same. As soon as the pucks out of their hands and they’re not under full control, we’ve got to be able to close and outnumber somebody and win a battle and then exit. So in that sense, yes. There were moments in the game still where we do that but it’s not consistent enough. I thought the second half of the ice towards their net, we did a lot of good stuff. Some better o-zone than we’ve seen in the last games and we threatened the net a lot better.

DEFENCEMAN JAKE MUZZIN

“You get the timing back within a game like this. It’s a high level of hockey here still. There’s lots of skill on this team and lots of skill in the league, and you accomplish that by coming and playing here.”

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On today’s game:
Loss for words right now. I think pretty frustrated, I think the whole group’s frustrated. We all haven’t been good enough. It’s going to take a group effort to climb our way out of this. Can we? Yes. Will we? Yes. Today’s another frustrating day. We’re going to find a way to right the ship.

On where he sees breakdowns in Toronto’s play:
D-zone, we definitely have to be a little bit tighter. We’re still allowing too much inside and getting to our goaltender. We’ve got to be able to close out on the D-zone when it’s a fifty-fifty puck and win our battles. There’s just an intensity in the game of hockey it needs to have and for the team to have throughout the entire bench. We had it for the second period today. Again, first period was not what we wanted in terms of talking about it and our slow start yesterday but just a little bit more heart, a little bit more possession, a little bit more our style and doing the things that we preach here and we’re having a hard time finding that consistency.

His play tonight was a whole other level that I hadn’t seen out of him and it’s really good to have guys that go up and then come back down to give them that confidence at this level and he’s showing that he can play really well at this level.” — GREG MOORE.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On the team’s response five-on-five:
I thought, really well. We had a good process during the game. The bench stayed with it, there was some adversity through the first and second periods. We found our game in the third period, we really showed how we can play.

On special teams:
I thought early on, the first couple of power plays, we just had a hard time getting through the middle of the rink. They did a good job getting up ice, disrupting our flow. Then we settled, started getting some entries and the in-zone, they did a good job of keeping us perimeter. We’ve got to find a way to get interior but you know, it was a little bit of a special teams game today. I was really happy five-on-five with how we executed and the looks that we got, really liked our o-zone and the movement that we got inside on the goalie a few times. We really gave ourselves a chance to win tonight.

On Kasimir Kaskisuo (34 saves):
He had a great game, gave us a chance to win this hockey game. He looked really solid, really calm, exactly what we need.

On Mason Marchment (3 goals):
He brought a lot of good energy, he loves the game, even on the bench, he’s so positive and brings a good energy. His play tonight was a whole other level that I hadn’t seen out of him and it’s really good to have guys that go up and then come back down to give them that confidence at this level and he’s showing that he can play really well at this level.

On Trevor Moore (1 assist):
Shows the character of the person that he is. I’m sure he’s been working really hard to get back. It’s the times when no one’s watching and you’re by yourself on the ice and going through your protocol to return to play, he was successful in today’s game because he’s such a hard worker and disciplined in that area.
