POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On today’s game:

It was a good 60-minute effort. Good energy, good start. We built momentum, got stronger as the game went on in terms of managing the puck and not giving them turnovers in transition towards our net.

On Källgren’s shutout:
He was great today. That’s back-to-back games in this barn where he’s done a really good job shutting the door. I don’t know if the shutout has been on the mind for anyone. I’m sure for him as any goalie is looking to get their first and even to this point, he probably deserves a shutout prior to this one. There were a couple of games here and there where we had some leads and we didn’t shut the door the way we should in the third period. He’s been really patient, he’s been working really hard. The consistency and the calmness in which he plays gives our team a lot of confidence.

JOEY ANDERSON (1 GOAL, 2 ASSISTS)

On today’s game:
Today was an awesome effort by everyone. Right out of the gate, we were physical. (Källgren) played great in the back end. We were simple with the puck. Like I said, I think this is the most physical game we’ve played and it’s just awesome that guys stepped up today. There wasn’t a guy out there that wasn’t carrying his weight. It was a complete 60-minutes from us today. It was really awesome for us to be able to help (Källgren) get that shutout today. It’s something we can build off of as a group.

ERIK KÄLLGREN (FIRST CAREER AHL SHUTOUT)

On his first shutout and whether he had thought about it this season:

You think about it. I think about it. You want to get the one. I’m not going to lie to you. We’ve been close a couple times before but of course we get the win and that’s the most important thing but to get that shutout is nice.

On the team’s performance in front of him:
We were very solid defensively. A couple of guys made some really big plays defensively. That obviously helps a lot. I think they had 11 shots for the last two periods. That definitely helps me. This is a team win and you can’t get a shutout without the team.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On the final Laval goal:

Coming back in the d-zone, we just need a better sorts and structure. In chaos moments like that, the energy or feel of the game is heightened. The experience and maturity of staying calm, seeing the game clearly, knowing our responsibilities. We just needed a better job of coming back and finding our spots there.

On Alex Steeves:

He’s done a great job (adjusting to professional hockey). Sometimes it’s not easy to be a first-year pro, especially from college when you’re playing two games on the weekends. He’s feeling the length of a pro season, the amount of games that we play. We have a big month coming up with a lot of games. Just the day-to-day management of your routine, your habits and taking care of your body, the recovery process. He’s handled it well, not just himself but a lot of our guys. Through January we had a big stretch of games, whether it was the COVID break or different things happening, we got through that tough stretch and now we’re in a little bit of a better place.

On Joseph Woll’s first game returning from injury:

Good. It was a tough one. They did a really good job at setting up the o-zone and just relying on point shots. It’s never easy for a goalie. I think most coaches in the game of hockey say get to the eyes of the goalie and be the screen. They made it really hard on us today, but he fought through a lot and made some good saves.

ALEX STEEVES (1 GOAL, 2 ASSISTS)

On Laval’s final goal:

We just got the shot blocked as we’re trying to get pucks to the net. Before the timeout, we got a really good look, a look that we wanted and the goalie made a really nice save and that’s kind of how it goes. The goalie makes a big save at a big time and we weren’t able to tie it up, so definitely frustrated but we had some good looks at the end. It’s tough being on the power play with the net empty. It’s kind of a high risk, high reward and they had a great block and they were able to get it in. It’s frustrating but I think we were getting some chances there and we just got the short end of the stick.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On today’s game:

This is a team that’s played us hard this year. Wanting to do well against a top opponent, a rival opponent in our division, a game where we get our fans back and feel their support, that gave us a big lift of energy today, and then in a special building as well.

On special teams:

They did a really good job. Establishing the shot there, it’s hard to get pucks down inside and Joey Anderson did a great job, as he always does, in that area of the rink, and penalty kill did a great job, obviously that short-handed goal. Special teams made a difference today.

On Michael Hutchinson:

I thought he did a really good job, and exactly what you said calm, gave the team confidence in front of him. At times there were a little bit of stretches where there weren’t a lot of shots and that can be a tough time for goalies to stay in it and stay engaged and he was ready for every opportunity.

JOEY ANDERSON (2 GOALS, 1 ASSIST)

On today’s game:

We know that they’re a team that’s never going to go away and they came out in that third period really hot and made a push and I think we responded well for the most part, especially after that timeout we settled down and got back to the things that had been giving us success. It’s just about finding that for as much of a 60 as we can and tonight, we did a lot of good things for a long portion of that game.

On his line with Brett Seney and Antti Suomela:

You guys can see, we all think the game very similar. We enjoy playing with each other too. That’s the thing you can see it out there when one of us scores, we’re just genuinely excited for each other. It just makes coming to the rink that much better and like I said, the style of play is very similar, everyone works hard, we’re in the right spots. Reading off each other is really nice and easy and Antti has fit right in there really well with us.

JOSEPH BLANDISI (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On his line with Curtis Douglas and Jack Kopacka:

Our line was great all-night creating chances. The puck squirted out and it was a great net drive by Dougie. Jack threw it off the pads and it kicked out to me and I was able to pull it and find the corner which was good.

On Michael Hutchinson’s performance:
It’s every day with him. He comes in ready to work every day. He’s dialled in. His details are amazing and just having that calm presence back there, same with (Källgren), Woll. All the guys we have are calm back there and it gives the team an extra oomph when you need it. When they’re a rock, they can keep pucks out of the net and build momentum for the team.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On today’s game:

If we’re looking at the two games, there were two slow starts and two losses. The starts were a strength of ours for awhile there. We’ll have to reset and discuss it as a group. If you look at the six periods, I thought we had four really good periods of the six. The first two periods of the games were our crux.

On taking one point out of the game:
I had talked to them after yesterday’s game. We’re proud of the character to fight back, to find their game in the second period and to push for 40 minutes, get back to playing the way we know we can play. There’s definitely something to that and not just packing it in after a bad start and not coming back into it. It’s a competitive group. We’ll have to make sure that come into the next game with a better start and find our game earlier than we have.

MAC HOLLOWELL (1 ASSIST)

On today’s game:
It’s always good to come back from a 2-0 deficit. At the end of the day, we had to last game and we had to tonight. It’s the second half of the season now, we’ve got to start getting better starts.

On the compete level:
The compete level and urgency was just really low in the first. It seemed like we were still just warming up out there. We didn’t really get our legs going until the second period.

On Kyle Clifford:
Just being in the locker room with a guy like that who’s won a Stanley Cup, who’s been throughout the NHL for so long. Just when he’s out there, when he’s speaking in the room, we’re listening that’s for sure.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On Toronto’s power play (2 goals):

Power play looked sharp, along with the overall team game in terms of our puck play, looked really clean. You could tell that they were anticipating where to go with the puck before they got it and the mindset of everybody using each other and using all five guys on the ice.

On Joseph Blandisi:

He’s been really good. He’s been scoring a lot lately, he’s really, really competitive. He works really hard, does a lot of little things well defensively, makes it hard on other guys and the other team. He closes quickly, plays inside of contact and finishes his hits. He brings a lot of energy, not only physically but verbally on our bench.

On Nick Ritchie:
He played great. Obviously, a goal there to get us started. He was a presence for us on the power play. Good strong wall plays on breakouts. For a big guy he moves really well, sees the ice really well and has really subtle hands to make small area plays and make his teammates better.

JACK KOPACKA (1 GOAL)

On Toronto’s forecheck:
It’s a big part of our game plan. We have a lot of skilled players on our team, a lot of guys with a lot of speed and we can get behind their D and work the cycle game. We’ve got big bodies as well as skilled players that can make plays out of the corners and we’re having a lot of success.

On the team’s attitude:
We’re going good right now, but you got to keep it going. I think we have a lot to prove to ourselves going into trying to make a playoff push. It’s going to be exciting.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On the team’s four game winning streak heading into the break:

The team has put in a lot of work since the beginning of the season. I would say the last month or so in terms of our process, the starts to games, the maturity we’re starting to build in playing with leads or even coming back in games late in the third. There’s a lot of pieces right now that are coming together. We’re putting in the work and we’re getting the results.

On Michael Hutchinson:

He did great. He competed really hard, kept us in there in the first period. I felt as a team we built and got better slowly as the game went on. Second period was much better than the first. Hutch had some real timely saves to give our team confidence.

On Nick Robertson:
To be able to return after being out for so long and have such an impact this quickly is because of how hard he works off the ice and on the ice. He took his return to play very seriously. He was ready when the challenge came to return and we’re seeing the fruits of that labour.

MICHAEL HUTCHINSON

On today’s game:
It was kind of a strange start to the game. I felt like we were controlling a lot of in-zone time in their end, but the shot clock didn’t really reflect that. We had some good scoring chances there, we just missed the net. Then they had a few shots on their power play and after that they were really funneling pucks to the net and really crashing the net for rebounds. The shots add up pretty quick that way but it’s fun playing those games as a goalie because you’re always involved in the game and you’re into it early.

On Mac Hollowell’s performance:

It was awesome, I thought he played unbelievable all night tonight. Right from the get-go he was talking to me on our puck protections and exchanges behind the net. He was very vocal out there which was nice to see, especially a guy who was in and out of the lineup right now, and then the third period, everyone is talking about the fight, but he blocked one almost with his face on a seam pass. That’s a huge block right there in a tight game. He was doing all the little things tonight as well as being able to contribute on the scoresheet and have a good fight which is always nice to see when both guys come away unscathed, but it was good momentum for us.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On tonight’s game:

As of late when we found ourselves down whether it’s the second or third period, the group’s starting to find confidence in their ability to come back and what it takes to win and find their game in those moments. It’s good to see. We have some guys who have stepped up in big way.

NICK ROBERTSON

On his first game since returning from injury:

It was a lot of fun. I’ve been away for a long time and it was the first injury I’ve had where I was off for three months. Today, I just had no expectations. Really just tried to play well and get the rust off and go from there.

ALEX STEEVES (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On tonight’s game:
It’s just a greasy road win. They feel amazing. It makes the bus ride home much more of a good time. Special teams were huge. Goaltending was huge. You get those two, you do it on the road and you give yourself a chance which is what we got tonight.

On special teams:
We talk with our special teams coaches and when you know you’re doing good things you just have to refocus in a different way and get a little extra effort. It’s huge for both units to get in on it tonight on the man advantage and the huge 5-on-3 penalty kill, a couple of huge blocks and big saves, those are momentum builders on the road and when you get that you give yourself a chance.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On tonight’s game:

We had to weather a storm at the start. They usually come out strong in their building. They also haven’t played a game in awhile so, they had a lot of energy. They’ve been sitting resting. Källgren did a really good job of holding us in and letting us get our legs. We got through some special teams and then those two quick goals turned things for us. We started to find our game and the team did a really good job of building and keeping the momentum as the game went on.

On Rich Clune’s 700th career professional game:

It’s special. I also played against him back in the day. For anyone to string along a career for this long regardless of level, regardless of anything. The determination, the discipline, the consistency that he’s fought through on the ice and off the ice. He’s just a really impressive person. I feel fortunate to be able to know him, to be able to work with him. I know our team values him big time with the things that he brings to the group. I’m just really proud and happy for him.

JOSEPH BLANDISI (2 GOALS, 1 ASSIST)

On his second goal and 200th career professional point:

Just a good passing play. Lots of good line mates to play with on this team. You find that open ice and some guy will find you. I told Mac that that pass impressed me. I didn’t think he’d have seen me there. It was a pretty good gift from him.

On keeping the lead in the final 40 minutes:
Just staying relentless with it. We’ve got great leadership in our dressing room. Even after that first 20, we weren’t too happy with it. We know how to calm the guys down and give our best effort for the next 40.

RICH CLUNE (700th CAREER PROFESSIONAL GAME)

On his milestone:

Any game that I can get into is a gift. I’m just really grateful to do it here with Toronto and especially this team, this year. It’s a lot of fun. I’m grateful. It’s been a hell of a ride. I love it.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On tonight’s game:

Really tough game. End of the road trip like this, you can tell the guys were starting to feel it. What I really loved was the confidence in the third period after they scored, the voices on the bench, the energy on the bench was different then it had been all year. There was a lot of belief in the group to find our way back into it.

JOSEPH DUSZAK (GAME-WINNING GOAL)

On the game-winning goal:

Just a great play by (Seney). Skated the whole zone and then just turned up and I just happened to be wide open and luckily it went in the net.

On the team’s attitude through the game:

We have a really good group of guys that like to stick together, play together. Everyone throughout the lineup knew the game wasn’t over. Lately we’ve been slipping with those leads like in Wilkes-Barre, we lost that two-goal lead. I thought it was good for our confidence to come back and get the tie and the win. We were 2-2-1 going into this game so, it’s good to finish off the road trip above .500.

BRETT SENEY (1 GOAL, 2 ASSISTS)

On the team’s attitude through the game:

That was one thing last game, we had the lead going into the third and we squandered it. That was one thing that it didn’t matter what the score was, we just wanted to go out there and work hard and play every shift like it’s 0-0. We got down there, but we didn’t give up. Every line was doing it tonight. We were setting each other up. We gave ourselves a chance to win and we won.

On the end of the road trip:

It’s always good to go 3-2-1, always good to be above .500. It’s been a long road trip. The bus ride is a little shorter when you get a win to finish it. It’s definitely a good one for the guys.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On tonight’s game:

I thought throughout the entire game the effort was better. It was a good response from yesterday’s game. This team that we’re playing is really hard working. They don’t make it easy to gain inches of the ice and gain zones. It was a good start. Overall, a more consistent 60 minutes which is what we’ve been looking for. During that stretch of games where we had more success in the win column, this is more of what we looked like and how we were playing. It’s definitely not the result we want, especially having the lead but in terms of the effort and how we played, it was in a much better place.

On Michael Hutchinson:

He did a great job, especially against a team that’s a volume shooting team. He definitely kept us in there, gave us a chance to win the game. It’s really, really hard with the dynamic now of taxi squads and the COVID season to expect these guys to come in, not having played that long and also knowing tat they’d do anything for the organization given the position that they are in. Good on him for coming in today and putting in a good effort.

JOSEPH BLANDISI (1 ASSIST)

On tonight’s game:

We were upset coming into this one tonight. I think we came out pretty hard but it’s one of those games that we got to find a way to hold the lead. It’s on the veteran guys on the ice at the end of the game – myself included I’ve got to get the block there.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On tonight’s game:

They just outcompeted us today. We just need to work harder in the d-zone. We were gliding around a little bit. We have a better effort. The group knows that. We’ll come tomorrow. I know the team will respond and match their intensity and doing a better job of setting up our o-zone and get pucks on the inside.

BRETT SENEY

On tonight’s game:
It was frustrating. Especially in this league, special teams are so important. We needed to capitalize on that early 5-on-3 and that gave them some momentum and they capitalized on their chances. There’s no moral victories and I liked the way we fought back in the end, guys were sticking up for each other and getting in there. We showed passion that way but at the end of the day, the main thing is wins. So, we have to get after it tomorrow.

HARTFORD 5, MARLIES 2

The Toronto Marlies six-game winning streak came to a halt on Wednesday night, as they fell 5-2 to the Hartford Wolf Pack. The Marlies are now 5-3-0-0 against Atlantic Division opponents and 0-1-0-0 against the Hartford Wolf Pack.

In the first period, the Marlies outshot the Wolf Pack 12-8, but it was the home side who scored the only goal of the period, thanks to leading scorer, Jonny Brodzinski.

In the second, Ryan Chyzowski snuck one past Keith Kinkaid early in the frame to tie the game at 1. But, just 40 seconds later, Hartford took the lead back thanks to Austin Rueschhoff. Later in the period, Bobby McMann tied the game with his ninth of the season.

But, that would be all for the Marlies offensively in this one. Rueschhoff, Alex Whelan, and Anthony Greco all tallied goals for the home side in the third period, en route to a 5-2 victory.

The Marlies will be looking to get back in the win column on Friday when they head to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two straight games. Puck drop is at 7:05pm.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On tonight’s game:

They’re a highly skilled team. You could tell the pace of play was fast. You could tell there was a lot of skill on both sides with our team and their team. I felt it was pretty evenly matched throughout the game. If you look at outside of the empty net goal, the goals all came off of turnovers. That’s not to say we did a lot of good things with the puck but some puck decisions or mistakes we made with the puck ultimately resulted in grade A scoring chances which they capitalized on. The team had push, had effort right from the start. It didn’t feel like at any point the team wasn’t into it or that the compete and the process wasn’t there. Källgren still made some big saves for us. It was a weird game. Felt like we were in it for the most part with them but the puck play and the turnovers hurt us.

On the line of Joseph Blandisi, Ryan Chyzowski and Jack Kopacka:

It was excellent. Kopacka’s really turned on the last three, four games. He’s starting to use his tools – his power and his stride and just using his pace to drive the play up the rink and winning 50-50 pucks, setting up the o-zone for the team. Blandisi is abrasive, plays inside of contact, gets inside the net. They’re doing a lot of good things. Chyzowski has added a lot to our team the last couple of games in terms of his energy, his compete and his passion for playing the game. It’s been nice these last few games where we have these lines that step up in really big roles that build momentum for our group at the right times. Clune, Dougie are another couple of guys who have done that in the past couple of games who have done that for us. Guys are taking turns stepping up. That line definitely did it for us tonight.

BOBBY McMANN (1 GOAL)

On tonight’s game:
We said it from the start, they’ve got some skill. Right from the backend to their forwards. They’ve got some good players and I think we matched that quite well actually. I was happy with our group effort. We were playing with some passion. We’ve been finding that lately and really playing as a team and this one just didn’t go our way.

Game Preview:

The Toronto Marlies head to Hartford on Wednesday for a battle with the Wolf Pack. The Marlies are looking for their seventh straight win.

This is the first of two meetings between the two teams this season. The last meeting between these two teams came back on February 13th, 2019, where the Wolf Pack edged the Marlies 3-2.

The Marlies are coming off of a 4-3 OT win vs. Lehigh Valley on Sunday, while the Wolf Pack took home a 4-0 win vs. Laval on Saturday. Toronto is 7-3-0-0 in their last 10, while Hartford is 4-4-1-1.

Some players to watch on the Marlies side include Joey Anderson who picked up his second hat trick of the season in Sunday’s game, and has points (5-1-6) in his last two games with the Marlies. Brett Seney tallied four points in Sunday’s victory. He and Anderson are currently tied for the team lead in goals with 13. On the Hartford side, Jonny Brodzinski leads the team with 24 points.
