LEAFS 2, SABRES 1 (OT) POSTGAME QUOTES: “Well just that it’s nice to have Freddie there and it’s nice to have a guy that’s capable of that. You’re going to need that at different times, without question. I thought that gives us confidence as well in doing so. …obviously he’s a big reason why we get a chance to keep the lead as long as we did and then gives us a chance to get it to overtime.” SHELDON KEEFE

HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE

On coaching his first game at Scotiabank Arena:

It was fun being here. Different circumstances than when I’ve been here in the past. Fitting that the Marlies were in the building this afternoon, that’s more what I’m familiar with. It’s nice, it’s special. A lot of my family here to enjoy it as well. It wasn’t the prettiest game at times, but we found a way to get the two points and finish off a good week here.

On what he thinks when he watches Andersen make several key saves:

Well just that it’s nice to have Freddie there and it’s nice to have a guy that’s capable of that. You’re going to need that at different times, without question. I thought that gives us confidence as well in doing so. It was nice and obviously he’s a big reason why we get a chance to keep the lead as long as we did and then gives us a chance to get it to overtime.

On the atmosphere in the arena:

Fans are into it. There’s a lot of them, it’s a big crowd. It’s nice to be at home. As I said, I’ve been in this environment before but never quite like this. Never quite as full and never quite as much emotion and energy and all those types of things. It was nice and we’re hoping it gets better from here.

On tonight’s effort:

I would say inconsistent. I’d say that we had some really good moments. I thought the start of the second and the third period, especially, were really good for us. Not where we would want it to be, not what we think we’re capable of. I think we’ve got to give some credit to Buffalo. I think they did a really good job in both games against us and made it a little harder on us than it’s been in previous games. That’s the next phase for us is to try to find a way to play the way we want to and the way we’re capable of when the other team has a good plan and is making it difficult on us.

On John Tavares picking up some momentum on the scoresheet:

I think it’s big. Players that have scored a lot expect to score a lot. Whether you’re a veteran or not, you want to score, you want to feel good, you want to know that you’re making an impact on the team in that manner. We expect him to score, we need him to score. He’s been very good in a lot of other areas for us as well. He’s taking a lot of heavy matchups and it’s nice to see him this weekend and, here in particular, put it in the net.

On his relationship with Tavares as the captain:

He’s been very consistent for me, both in his effort, his performance and, then, just in his demeanor. He’s a very consistent man. He comes to the rink every day, he’s prepared, prepared himself mentally, physically, does the work. He’s got a great perspective to be able to offer me in terms of what the team needs or what the feeling around the team is. He’s also a great voice for the team. He’s plugged into a lot of things that are happening and it’s just been real nice for me to have him to lean on here early.

FREDERIK ANDERSEN (29 SAVES)

On if he knew he kept the shot that was reviewed out of the net:

I didn’t know it was that close. I haven’t seen it yet, so you guys had a better view than me. I thought I had it; I didn’t know they were going to go upstairs. I thought it was a save. I tried to get some eyes on the pass and get my glove over to his blade so when he released, I was set up. It was just a matter of trying to get my body across and taking up as much space as possible.

On how much of a change it was to play the second leg of a back-to-back:

It was a little different. We didn’t really have a skate yesterday because of the early game but I made sure to skate a little bit this morning with [Steve Briere]. I think the guys that played yesterday had a little bit more of a relaxed morning and got ready for tonight. That’s just the way I like it. Since I didn’t play last night I wanted to come in sharp.

AUSTON MATTHEWS (1 ASSIST)

On Andersen’s performance tonight:

I think there were points in the game where we kind of got hemmed in the D-zone and he made some big saves. We turned some pucks over and a couple incredible saves. He kept us in it and we were able to get that extra point which was huge for us.

On what Buffalo did well to limit their scoring chances:

I think they tracked back hard and were able to sustain pressure on the forecheck. As soon as we got the puck, we found we didn’t have as much time and space as we really thought so it was tough to make plays. Similar to last night, I think we’re still four or five games in and trying to find that identity – when to make a play and when to make the safe play and chip the puck out and create some space in behind. I think that’s still a work in progress for us but all-in-all we’re happy to get the two points and move onto the next one.

WILLIAM NYLANDER (1 GOAL)

On his powerplay goal:

It was a little lucky, I think it hit his stick and deflected off his arm and in. It was nice to get one on the powerplay that’s for sure.

On if he caught Hutton off guard:

I think maybe they thought I was going to pass it backdoor or something, so I had some space to go to the net which was nice.

On if his unit stayed out longer on the powerplay by design:

It’s nothing that we’ve talked about. I guess we just happened to be out there. We’re usually out there for a minute but we just happened to be out there a little longer today.

JOHN TAVARES (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On getting his 400th career assist:

I’ve played with some pretty good shooters. They’re not always pretty. I’ve just tried to play my game and be effective, whether it’s putting the puck in the net or setting up teammates. I want to be able to help my team in different ways. It’s nice to continue to be productive. I didn’t know it was right around the corner. Always good to get it, especially in a win.

On his overtime goal:

Well, my first shot I thought it kind of surprised him and when I got a bit of separation again and had a little bit of a screen, I tested it again. I was towards the end of my shift, so I wanted to be sure with it. I had some good room and I think I got good wood on it. I was able to time it right and happy I picked a corner.

MAPLE LEAFS 2, SABRES 1 (OT) POSTGAME NOTES: John Tavares collected the secondary assist on William Nylander’s second-period goal and later scored the game-winning goal at 1:45 of overtime. Tavares has points (4-2-6) in three consecutive games. His assist was his 400th career NHL assist.

Makar’s 25 points are the most by a rookie defenseman in his team’s first 22 games of a season since Murphy (26) in 1980-81. It’s the highest total by an Avalanche blueliner through the team’s first 22 contests of a season, and the second-most by a franchise defender through 22 team contests behind Steve Duchesne (26) in 1992-93.

MORE MAKAR On Nov. 16, Makar became the fourth defensemen in NHL history to be the first rookie to reach 20 points. He joined Nicklas Lidstrom (22 GP with Detroit in 1991-92), Bobby Orr (33 GP with Boston in 1966-67) and Hap Day (18 GP with Toronto St. Pats in 1924-25). Makar was just the fourth defenseman in NHL history to record 20 points in his first 20 career games.

20 POINTS BY DEFENSEMAN IN FIRST 20 NHL GAMES Harry Cameron 1917-18 Toronto Arenas (27) Hap Day 1924-25 Toronto St. Pats (23) Larry Murphy 1980-81 Los Angeles (24) Cale Makar 2019-20 Colorado (22)

He was the first rookie defenseman to have 20 or more points through his team’s first 20 games of a season since Brian Leetch (22) in 1988-89 with the New York Rangers.

AND MORE… • Makar registered his second two-goal game on Thursday in Minnesota. He is just the second Avalanche/Nordiques rookie defenseman to record two multi-goal games in a season (Pierre Lacroix 1979-80) • Recorded a career-high four assists on Nov. 16 in Vancouver, setting a single-game franchise rookie record in assists and matching the record in points (Jeff Brown with Quebec on Oct. 13, 1986 vs. Vancouver). • Was the first rookie defenseman in franchise history to score a goal in three straight games, Nov. 7-12. In fact, he was just the 11th rookie blueliner to have a three-game goal streak over the last 30 years (1989-80). • Potted the game-winning goal in two straight contests, Nov. 9-12, the eighth rookie defenseman in NHL history to score the winning tally in consecutive games. • NHL’s Third Star for the week of Nov. 4-10. Second Avalanche rookie to be named one of the three weekly stars, joining Matt Duchene (Third Star, Nov. 30–Dec. 6, 2009), and just the third defenseman, joining Liles (Second Star, Nov. 15-21, 2010) and Barrie (Third, Jan. 4-10, 2016). • Was just the second rookie defensemen in Avalanche/Nordiques history to post consecutive multi-point outings, Nov. 7-9, joining David Pichette (Dec. 7-10, 1980).

STAR STRUCK Nathan MacKinnon was named the NHL’s Second Star of the week for Nov. 11-17. This was the second straight weekly honor for an Avalanche player, as Cale Makar was the league’s Third Star for Nov. 4-10.

JUST SOMETHING ABOUT THIS MONTH Nathan MacKinnon has 15 points (6g/9a) in 10 games so far this month. MacKinnon, who was the NHL’s Second Star of the Month last November (2018) after he was the league’s First Star in November of 2017, has now combined for 58 points (20g/38a) in 36 November games since 2017, the most of any player (Connor McDavid has 57 in 40 GP).

EVERYBODY’S TALKIN ‘BOUT THE NEW KID(S) IN TOWN Offseason additions Andre Burakovsky (10 goals), Joonas Donskoi (9) and Nazem Kadri (7) rank 2-3-4 on the team in goal scoring, combining for 26 (or 33.3%) of the club’s 78 total markers. All three forwards rank among the Avalanche’s top-five point producers as well, as they’ve picked up 50 points (26g/24a) between them in 22 games.

THE MORE THE MERRIER Four different Colorado goaltenders have earned a win in 2019-20, making this just the second Avalanche team to feature four different goaltenders with a victory in a single season (also 2005-06). All three wins on this last road trip came from a different netminder: Adam Werner (at Edmonton), Antoine Bibeau (at Vancouver) and Philipp Grubauer (at Calgary). In fact, four netminders have won a game for the Avs in this month alone.

LIGHTING THE LAMP The Avs are averaging 3.55 goals-per-game, tied for fourth in the NHL, while their +14 goal differential leads all Western Conference teams. Colorado has scored 29 goals during this current 5-2-0 run. The Avs began this stretch with a 9-4 victory over the Predators on Nov. 7, the club’s most goals since Dec. 9, 2007 (9-5 vs. St. Louis).

YOU HAD TO BE A BIG SHOT Nathan MacKinnon ranks second in the NHL with 106 shots. He recorded a career-high 12 shots on Nov. 1 vs. Dallas, tying the single-game franchise record set by Gabriel Landeskog on Jan. 9, 2019 at Calgary. It is the most shots by an NHL player in a game this year. MacKinnon, who led the NHL with a franchise-record 366 shots last season, has a shot in 173 consecutive games, the second longest active streak (Dougie Hamilton 269).

WORKING OVERTIME Nathan MacKinnon has two OT winners this season and eight in his career, one behind Milan Hejduk for the most in franchise history. The single-season franchise record is three, a mark already tied by MacKinnon in 2017-18.

LAST MAN STANDING The Avs were the NHL’s last undefeated team (5-0-0) and the last team without a regulation loss (7-0-1). Colorado’s 7-0-1 start was its best through eight games in franchise history, and the eight-game point streak was its second-longest to start a season (9-0-2 in 200001). It was the longest by any team to open a campaign since the Canadiens began 2016-17 with a 9-0-1 run.

THIS DAY IN AVS HISTORY Nov. 23, 2018 – J.T. Compher scored two shorthanded goals on the same penalty kill in a 5-1 victory at Arizona. He tied franchise records for shorthanded goals in a game and a period and set a new franchise mark for the fastest two shorthanded tallies (1:25).

It has the Coyotes logo on it too, which is pretty meaningful for me and my family as well. I think the guys just went out and played with confidence and felt like they could take control of the game. It takes some time to establish that and we had to find our way through the first period and I kind of felt out some things. I thought once we settled into the game, I thought we were full marks and the guys played well. More importantly than how we played I just thought we had good energy on the bench. I was really impressed. Obviously, it’s my first time being part of the group like that. The interactions with the players on the bench, the energy, the vibe, the reaction of the players on Barrie’s goal — you just see they really care for him as a teammate and really feel good for him. Those types of things are takeaways for me.

On his first game behind an NHL bench:

I thought it went well. It felt like a hockey game. I was a little behind on a couple of my line changes, I’d like to speed that up a little bit, but the players took care of me well there, I appreciated that. All in all, it did feel like a hockey game to me. I didn’t know how it was going to be. The whole day felt very comfortable, obviously I’m very happy about that and the credit for that goes to the support staff for the help they’ve provided, the assistant coaches and training staff for this transition. The players, they’ve been open-minded and welcoming and engaged. They just want to be coached and they allowed me to do that today and I appreciated that. We asked a lot of them on a game day, a lot of new things coming at them, tried to keep it as simple as possible, but, still, it’s new things coming at them and they have to mix up the routine and all those things. To come up with a pretty good effort, right until the very end of course, we had a mishap and we owe Freddie [Andersen] one, for sure. I’m just very happy.

On starting Barrie alongside Rielly:

We just talked about the fact we were probably going to mix and match our D pairings in different situations throughout the game. Offensive faceoffs, just at times when we think we can get them on the ice together and it’ll really help us offensively. We wanted to have a good first shift, we wanted to establish a good game and get the Matthews line going and thought it was a good chance to do that. Obviously, specific to Tyson, he’s a guy we’re trying to mix things up a little bit with here and get him going. Today obviously the goal is a big weight off his shoulders. We’re going to continue to try to do those things.

On what the group did best today:

I thought what we did best was they held on to the puck and I thought, through the neutral zone especially, got organized and used the skill and speed we’ve talked about. I thought that really established some really good play for us in the offensive zone and really, at times, allowed us to control the play. That was the thing I was most impressed with. I thought that might be the easiest thing for them given the ability of the players and that’s what I saw.

On seeing Pierre Engvall score his first career NHL goal:

Any time you see a guy score his first NHL goal it’s a big deal. I was happy it came on the penalty kill. That’s an area of Pierre’s game that wasn’t there before he came to the Marlies and he was given that responsibility and he has really learned to the point where I trusted him here in an NHL game to do it. I thought, not just the goal, he was good in other areas of the penalty kill as well. I used him and Andreas Johnsson today on the penalty kill as two new guys with lots of speed and tenacity on the puck.

On the team showing him enthusiasm after the win:

It makes you feel good, for sure. As I was saying, the biggest takeaway for me today is that we’ve got really good people here, good energy and it was really noticeable for me when that first goal went in, most of the guys are happy to score but it was different, it was a different feeling on the bench just because you can tell they care for one another and to see Barrie score that goal, it was a good moment. It really speaks to the character of the group and they’ve been really welcoming for me, they’ve been really engaged and listening. I couldn’t have asked for a better first day.

On what he’ll remember most about the day:

Oh man, I don’t think I’ve slept in a few days so I’m not sure I’ll remember any of this when I get up in the morning. The thing I’ll take away is just that the players made it so comfortable to coach them today. That’s what I’ll really take away. Just having my family here, my wife and kids, my mother-in-law is here — my in-laws and my wife are from here in Arizona — my parents have been able to make the trip. All of that, just having them be a part of this is probably the biggest thing.

On if he’ll keep any mementos from tonight:

They gave me the puck after the game and I haven’t really thought about what to do with it, but it’s special, nonetheless. It has the Coyotes logo on it too, which is pretty meaningful for me and my family as well. It’s a special day in that sense, but one of the things I was really wanting to be mindful of was to not make today about me. I want to make it about the players and about the team and I’m happy that it worked out good for everybody.

FREDERIK ANDERSEN (30 SAVES)

On tonight’s win:

I thought we played with pretty good confidence, pretty good pressure, but also at times when we needed to take it easy, I thought we were good at that too. It was a good step for us. I thought we really played well in the offensive zone as well. Guys were skating a lot and making room for each other and moving around. It was great to see.

On what stands out about new head coach Sheldon Keefe:

It’s too early to say. I don’t want to start talking too much, but I thought we came out and answered really good today and it’s going to be a testing time now to keep moving, keep moving forward after this and building on it.

On the importance of his first period glove save:

I thought it was nice to be rewarded off us having a good period and being up 1-0. Obviously, a huge goal by [Barrie] but, obviously, that felt good to make that save and keep it at zeros. Like I said, good to be rewarded for a good period and I thought we continued that throughout the game.

TYSON BARRIE (FIRST GOAL AS A MAPLE LEAF)

On scoring his first goal of the year:

I’m not going to lie, that feels good. Especially going into Denver tonight. I didn’t want to go in with no goals so it feels a little better.

On if that was the type of goal he’s used to scoring:

Yeah, I think I’ve done a good job jumping in in the past and kind of choosing some holes so that was what I’m accustomed to. It was nice to get that for sure.

On if he tried to be more involved offensively tonight:

Yeah, I think our whole team was a little more aggressive and had a little bit more speed through the neutral zone. We had a lot of fun out there tonight and I think it showed.

PIERRE ENGVALL (FIRST NHL GOAL)

On what he’ll remember about his first NHL goal:

I mean, just the feeling to score was unbelievable. Just so happy for it.

On his post-goal celebration:

I don’t really know. I was just so happy and tried to do something special for the first celly. I think I did it.

On if his teammates gave him a hard time after falling during his celebration:

I did a lot. We watched it – it was a PK goal – so we watched it, like, five times on the break. So, yeah, I got it.

AUSTON MATTHEWS (1 GOAL)

On which of the team’s three goals he liked the best:

I’d probably have to go with the first. Obviously, a great play by [Barrie], that’s a big monkey off the back for him. First goal for Pierre [Engvall]. A pretty special night for a lot of guys here and a big two points with everything that’s been going on the last couple of weeks and the last 36 hours.

On the emotions after tonight’s win:

I think a little bit of everything. I think we’re just excited we got back in the win column. We take a little pressure off ourselves and just continue to build on this. A new coach, obviously some stuff we need to work on, some stuff that’s going to change systematically. I thought tonight, with everything that he threw at us in a short period of time that he’d like to see, I thought we executed that for the most part. We’ll just try to build from there.

On what led to a more cohesive effort tonight:

I just think a little bit more freedom and we weren’t really just giving up the puck. I thought when something wasn’t there, we’d just kind of come back and hang on to it and we’d all come up and support each other. We didn’t have guys all over the place. That’s something that opens up stuff for us because we’ve got a lot of guys that can skate and are skilled with the puck and can skate through the neutral zone. Guys are using each other and when we support each other all over the ice we tend to have the puck on our tape for a majority of the game, which we did tonight.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 4, MAPLE LEAFS 2 POSTGAME QUOTES: “The streak doesn’t really look too pretty, but I thought we made some steps in the right direction today. I definitely think we came ready to play and obviously a great hockey game, too. Fleury played really well down there and I think it could have gone either way. I thought we definitely had something to build on.”–FREDERIK ANDERSEN.

HEAD COACH MIKE BABCOCK

On tonight’s game:
I thought we played a good first, I thought we didn’t win any faceoffs in the second and spent more time in the D-zone. We had lots of chances. I was in here the other night and Fleury was real good the other night. I thought he was real good. We had some chances, hit some posts. I think Petan — I could be wrong, I haven’t seen the replay — I thought the net was empty there and Fleury made a great save. The bottom line is we’ve got to stick with it and just keep grinding. We had a chance on the power play at the end there and we didn’t execute on that. It’s disappointing but I’m always about the process and how hard guys play. We played way harder so I thought that was good. I thought Hyman was back, I thought Mikheyev really had a good step. That was positive for us.

On what needs to be changed on the penalty kill:
We’ve got to keep it out. I didn’t think we were that bad tonight on it, to tell you the truth, but they got two on it so that’s not good enough. We’ve just got to keep working at it, we’ll spend more time at it. Maybe early in the year when we didn’t skate as much in the pregame skates, we should have spent more time doing it. We did that because we were trying to keep our guys fresher and the science part of it, but, in the end, you’ve got to execute on those things so that’s on me.

On how deflating it is to give up a goal immediately after tying the game:
It’s disappointing, obviously. We turned the puck over and they came in and shot it in. I still thought we were resilient. We talked about it before the game, we have to show good mental toughness and just keep grinding every shift, shift after shift, whether it goes good or bad. We’ve been guilty of when it goes bad, when they score, we wilt. There’s no sense doing that, just keep playing. I’ve been around a long time, you’re in lots of situations where you don’t win for a while and you end up having a real good year. Just keep grinding.

FREDERIK ANDERSEN (33 SAVES)

On the team’s play tonight:
The streak doesn’t really look too pretty, but I thought we made some steps in the right direction today. I definitely think we came ready to play and obviously a great hockey game, too. Fleury played really well down there and I think it could have gone either way. I thought we definitely had something to build on.

On how the team is processing the current stretch:
We had a good talk yesterday to try and improve and I thought we answered pretty well today. It could have gone either way, I think. I got outplayed a little bit by Fleury down there. That happens. Again, I thought we had some good things to keep going.

ZACH HYMAN (1 GOAL)

On tonight’s game:
I think there’s a lot of positives to take away from today. I think when you’re losing, it’s hard to stay the course but I think we played really well today. We had our chances when the game was on the line there. It was a tight game; we just couldn’t finish it. We need to be better on the PK, better on special teams there. It was good to get a powerplay goal. I think we took a big step today even though we lost. The next game is going to be really important for us but I think that we can build some confidence from this game moving forward.

On what the team can take away from tonight’s game:
I think we didn’t quit. I think that we stuck with it. You go down 3-1, you can kind of pack it in, but I think we were strong throughout that third period and really pushed back. Fleury made a big save on [Petan] there, [Mikheyev] hit the crossbar. These aren’t excuses, this is just reality. They won the game but I think that we had a chance to win that game, we were in the game the whole way through and we didn’t quit so I think that’s really important and something to build off of moving forward.

JASON SPEZZA (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On if the team can take some positives out of tonight’s loss:
Yeah, definitely a much better effort. It was good hockey game. We lost the special teams battle and that ends up being the game. It’s something to build off of but it’s frustrating. We need to get a win here; it doesn’t matter how it is. If it’s ugly, we’ve got to find a way to get a win.

On what the team needs to do moving forward:
Just work. We can’t take a step back. We laid an egg of a game in Pittsburgh. A better effort tonight, but when you go through these losing streaks, it always seems like it’s harder to dig yourselves out of it, just like when you’re winning it’s easy to keep winning. We can’t take a step back next game. We’ve got to watch the tape and see what we can do better and keep moving forward.

JOHN TAVARES (20:05 TOI)

On tonight’s game:
I thought we were right there. We had a great opportunity in the third and we just didn’t maximize it so we’ve just got to regroup and find a way to get it done.

On his third period hooking penalty:
Yeah, I just got caught trying to lift his stick. Obviously, I’ve just got to try to be smarter and not get my stick caught up.

On Marc-Andre Fleury’s save late in the third period:
It was obviously a great save and a great opportunity. We had some really good looks in the third and we’ve got to find a way to put those in. Give him credit, he made it tough and made some good saves.

On the team’s mindset at the moment:
We want the results. We just want different results. We want to win. It’s obviously frustrating when you’re not getting them and I think we’ve talked about resolve and resiliency and trying to stay with it. It’s all we can do is continue to move forward and find ways to get better and get the job done when we have opportunities like this.
