POSTGAME QUOTES: HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE On the importance of a strong start coming off the western road trip: Sheldon Keefe: “I liked our start for sure. We thought we needed to start quickly in the game and obviously playing with the lead is important, always, but especially against this team so to build the lead that we did was great to see. I thought we moved the puck really well in that first period which gave us a chance to get after it and get a chance to attack the net so it was nice to get that lead to start quick.” JOHN TAVARES On tonight’s win: John Tavares: “They’re a great hockey team, they’ve got a lot of depth and tremendous amount of highend talent so just thought we had good preparation coming in, good mindset and liked the way we came out. We had good energy, especially coming off of the west coast trip. Sometimes that jet leg can linger around and especially since we had some good success coming in with the right attitude and re-focusing. I don’t think we loved our second period but I think a good sign that we withheld their push and got the lead back and then came out with a great effort in the third and increased it obviously with some great plays and some finishes throughout the lineup. Good team win and we’ll build on it and get ready for the back-to-back.” AUSTON MATTHEWS On the team having a good response after Colorado scoring twice in the second period: Auston Matthews: “I think that is something we’ve done really well this year. You know when momentum shifts to the other side and kind of gets rolling around in our end we just don’t panic. We just try to find our way back and get the momentum back on our side. It helps when our goaltender makes some big saves and guys just go out there and win their shift and get things going in their end.” JACK CAMPBELL On tonight’s win: Jack Campbell: “Yeah they are a really good team over there. They are super good offensively, they’ve got a lot of great players. I just thought we came out and continued playing how we’ve been playing for a while now and just stuck to the game plan. We had everyone contributing and it was a great win.

POSTGAME QUOTES: HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE On what he saw from the group today that allowed the team to finish this road trip strong: Sheldon Keefe: “I thought we regrouped after the first period. I thought Anaheim was definitely the better team in that first period. We were able to regroup and find our game in the second. They really in the first period made it hard for us to get to the neutral zone, harder to sustain that in a second period setting and that allowed us to really get our legs going. So that was a good period for us obviously, we got a lead again. Jack Campbell was great all the way throughout. We gave up certainly a lot more volume than we would have liked but I thought we defended pretty well tonight and kept things to the perimeter and limited rebound opportunities and such. Just a good team effort all the way through. Great road trip for us, this is a challenging game here to get through at the end of a long road trip, but the guys dug in and got a win and let us go home with a nice clean trip here. Really proud of the group. AUSTON MATTHEWS On the teams recent run of success: Auston Matthews: “It feels great. We’re rolling. It seems like we’re just getting consistent play out of all four lines. Our goaltending has been amazing, whether it’s Woller, obviously Soup has been unbelievable for us all year. I can’t say enough good things about him. I think just all throughout our lineup we’re getting what we need from everybody and it’s been a full team effort every single night.” On whether it’s a mindset or the way it worked out that his three goals this road trip were scored from close to the net: Auston Matthews: “I think a little bit of both. I like to think I can score from different areas. Just try to get to the net. Obviously, that’s usually where goals are scored a big percentage of the time. A lot of times when it’s not going in from outside you just have to get to the net. I was fortunate to get a couple good bounces, a couple good tips and be able to cash in on some plays.” MICHAEL BUNTING On the teams recent run of success: Michael Bunting: “It’s fun to be apart of obviously when you’re winning hockey games. The mood in the room is upbeat everyone is happy so it’s really fun to be a part of. It was a great road trip for us, and we have to head home and face a good team in Colorado so enjoy tonight and look forward to that game on Wednesday.” On the team’s confidence level: Michael Bunting: “I think the confidence level is good. Everyone is contributing now. Guys are getting on the scoresheet and guys are playing their game and it showed tonight and it showed all road trip so I think everyone is having fun.” JACK CAMPBELL On the teams recent run of success: Jack Campbell: “Yeah the boys are having a blast out there, we’re working hard and executing the game plan. We’re just enjoying it and trying to get better.” On what impresses him about the team in front of him: Jack Campbell: “They’re just going above and beyond. Everyone is doing what the game plan is and sacrificing their bodies and just committing to their rolls and playing super hard for 60 plus minutes, if it takes more, they keep it going. Just really proud of the effort out there.” ALEXANDER KERFOOT On the teams recent run of success: Alexander Kerfoot: “Yeah, it’s a lot of fun, I mean anytime you’re winning in good stretches like this it’s a lot of fun. There’s lots of energy coming to the rink everyday and we’re playing good hockey so we’ve just got to keep it up. We’ve talked all year about consistent and it’s a long haul the 82-game season so trying to not get to high but also enjoying the good run we’re on right now. On if anything feels different to last year’s regular season success: Alexander Kerfoot: “I don’t know. Anytime you’re winning games it feels good and I think during the regular season last year we had good stretches and were playing really good hockey then as well so it’s tough to say. Defensively we’ve been really solid all year long this year and that has kind of allowed us to be in most games and obviously Soupy has been unbelievable so it doesn’t really feel a ton different I don’t think. I think we were playing good hockey last season as well but it’s good to keep the momentum going.

We had a huge goal in response to giving up one and then a great sequence that leads to the Matthews goal to get us to 3-1 and then a clinical powerplay to get us to 4-1. So there are really key moments there where we were really good but in general, I didn’t think we were very good at 5-on-5. The penalty killing was good, goaltending was good but our game at 5-on-5 didn’t look anything like it’s looked here of late. I don’t blame our approach or our mindset or anything like that it’s just the game was a lot quicker and lot more open today than we would like it to be or has been in recent games. We led virtually for the entire game and that leads to interesting and challenging dynamics. In terms of our work and our results and being good in very key moments those are all really good things for us in a 4-1 game where I didn’t think we were very good in.” WAYNE SIMMONDS On the performance of his line: Wayne Simmonds: “I felt like our game was touch and go to be honest with you. I thought we did a lot of good things but there were a lot of things we could have done better. In saying that, I thought we did a good job offensively and were in on a big goal together that helped the team win so all-in-all it was a pretty solid game.” On the team’s commitment to defence: Wayne Simmonds: “I think that is what we’ve been keying in on over the last little bit here. Everyone has done a really good job. Joseph Woll played really great tonight, he played unbelievable and he made some huge saves, especially in the third period and we didn’t allow them to creep back into the game so that was huge. We’ve made a conservative effort over the last long haul here to make sure we play this game well defensively and offensive will come through.” WILLIAM NYLANDER On the team’s performance: William Nylander: “I think we came out and generated chances and it was a little too much back-andforth I thought but other than that Joe made some huge saves for us and we just have to keep building off of that.” On if he’s been trying to generate more shots on net: William Nylander: “Yeah, I think I was slipping on my shots and haven’t been putting stuff on net and I need to keep that going and score goals.

Wilson became the sixth player with Sharks roots to be enshrined, following Igor Larionov (2008), Ed Belfour (2011), Rob Blake (2014), Sergei Makarov (2016) and Teemu Selanne (2017). In 1,024 NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks and the Sharks, Wilson recorded 827 career points (237g, 590a), which ranks 15th all-time amongst NHL defensemen. Wilson was the recipient of the 1982 James Norris Trophy, was named to three NHL All-Star teams and played in seven NHL All-Star Games. Internationally, he was selected to represent Canada in the 1984 Canada Cup and the Rendez-vous ’87 series. Acquired by the Sharks in 1991, the blueliner served as the Sharks first captain during his two seasons (1991-1993) with the club as a player.
SUPER MARIO Mario Ferraro blocked a season-high seven shots and recorded a pair of assists on Nov. 24 against Ottawa. The 23-year-old defenseman has 10 points (2g, 8a) through the first 19 games of the season, his most through the first 19 games of a season in his career. Ferraro paces all NHL players in blocked shots (58) and sits 12th among League skaters with 24:53 of ice time per game. In the month of November, he ranks tied-seventh among NHL defensemen in points (2g, 7a) and eighth in time on ice per game (25:33). The alternate captain played a game-high and career-high 31:12 on Nov. 6 against New Jersey and is one of eight League skaters to play 30 or more minutes in a game this season. HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT San Jose recorded a season-high 40 hits on Nov. 20 against Washington. This marked the 22nd time that the franchise had tallied 40 or more hits in a game and the first time that the team recorded 40 or more hits since Oct. 2, 2019 at Vegas (also 40 hits). Rudolfs Balcers (six) and Radim Simek (five) both tied career-highs for hits in the game. Jacob Middleton recorded a new career high for hits in a period and hits in a game with four hits in the first period of the Sharks Nov. 22 game against Carolina. SUBLIME REIM James Reimer is sixth in save percentage (.936) and seventh in goals-against-average (2.04) among NHL goaltenders with five or more games played. Reimer has helped the Sharks earn points in seven of his ten starts and earned the win in the Sharks Nov. 22 game against Carolina (22 saves) and Nov. 24 game against Ottawa (26 saves). No goaltender in franchise history with five or more games played has posted a better save percentage (.950) or goals-against-average (1.54) through the first ten games of a season. Reimer’s .936 save percentage and 1.86 goals-against-average in 19 regular season games in a Sharks uniform leads all franchise goaltenders with more than ten games played. TIMO TIME ALL THE TIME Timo Meier has recorded at least one point in eleven of the fourteen games he has played in this year. This season, he is averaging career-bests in points per game (1.29), time on ice per game (18:02), shots per game (4.21) and blocked shots per 60 minutes (2.85). Meier has recorded the gamewinning goal in two of the Sharks last three wins. The winger tallied three points (1g, 2a), three hits, two blocked shots and two takeaways in San Jose’s 6-3 win over Ottawa on Nov. 24. KILLER EFFORT Since Bob Boughner took over coaching duties on Dec. 11, 2019, San Jose has manned the sixth ranked penalty kill (82.5%) in the league and are tied-eighth with ten short-handed goals in that span. This season, the Sharks currently rank second in the NHL on the penalty kill (48-for-54, 88.9%) and are first in short-handed goal differential (minus-four). ROOKIE CONTRIBUTIONS Scott Reedy made his NHL debut on Nov. 22 to become the league-leading seventh club skater to make their debut this season (others: Jonathan Dahlen, William Eklund, Santeri Hatakka, Artemi Kniazev, Ryan Merkley and Jasper Weatherby). San Jose also leads the NHL in number of rookies to play games (ten) and number of rookie defensemen to play games (five). Entering Nov. 23, Dahlen is second among all League rookies in goals (seven) and first in game-winning goals (two) and became the third Sharks skater ever to record two or more game-winning goals within their first ten NHL career games (others: Marco Sturm – 3 GWG, Joe Pavelski – 2 GWG). Weatherby is first among 2021-22 League rookies (min. 100 faceoffs) in faceoff percentage (50.3%). MODEL OF CONSISTENCY Since being named the team’s general manager on May 13, 2003, Doug Wilson has strategically built the San Jose Sharks into one of the NHL’s top franchises through strong drafting, shrewd trades and timely free agent signings. In his 19 seasons in charge of the Sharks hockey department, Wilson has guided the team to its most successful era since the franchise’s inception, capturing a Presidents’ Trophy (2009), five Pacific Division titles, advancing to the Western Conference Final on five occasions (2004, 2010, 2011, 2016, 2019) and appearing in the Stanley Cup Final (2016). POSTGAME QUOTES: HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE Q: Thoughts on tonight’s game: Sheldon Keefe: “I just thought it was a very sound effort from our guys all the way through. I thought we played hard. It’s not an easy building to play in. I thought at the beginning the fans were engaged and the Islanders are going to play hard and be competitive and I thought our guys matched that and played through it. Just played a really sound game with great goaltending. Q: On the shorthanded goal and whether it was the product of a good penalty kill as of late or catching the other team off guard: Sheldon Keefe: “I think it’s more just catching them off guard and getting one of those breaks. It’s something where, I think when your penalty kill is feeling it, they are confident, and they tend to hold onto the puck a little bit longer and sometimes they can catch teams like that. I thought there were a couple of times just before the goal when you saw the guys being patient with it and looking for an opportunity to make a play. It was a huge goal for us and more importantly it was a huge kill at an important time of the game.” MITCH MARNER On tonight’s game: Mitch Marner: Yeah it was good, right from the drop of the puck we were moving our feet, creating scoring chances from the start and rolling well. Every line was contributing in a different way on the ice. That’s how we want our starts to be. Obviously after last game we weren’t happy with how that happened and thought tonight we came in and played a good game. Woll made some big saves for us but liked how right from the drop of the puck we were throttle down and going at them. On his shorthanded goal tonight: Mitch Marner: I think it starts with Kämpf, getting that puck down low and having three guys on his back and working extremely hard to get that puck back to our d-men with time. Then saw it go over the Jake with three men down and as I was coming on the ice I realized the far side was open and he made the play to me so I just tried to make a play off of it. JOSEPH WOLL On his first career NHL shutout: Joseph Woll: It’s pretty cool but I think at the end of the day the biggest thing is that we won the game and just to see how well we played, coming out and putting up 40 plus shots and playing a hard defensive game all the way through and see how that translates to offense for us was pretty sweet. I’m just happy to be able to share it with this group. On the team eliminating secondary scoring opportunities in front of him: Joseph Woll: Whenever a goalie gets a shutout it’s definitely not fair to just say it was all him or even mostly him. I think it really starts with how the team plays and it was unbelievable. JAKE MUZZIN On tonight’s effort: Jake Muzzin: I thought it was a pretty solid effort from start to finish. We focused on some things that we needed to improve on in our back-to-backs and I thought we responded well and got a shutout for Woll who played great, and got his first shutout, so that’s awesome. On what it means for Woll to be getting meaningful time with the team and getting his first shutout: Jake Muzzin: Yeah, I think it will give him some confidence. He played well in his first game and played well again tonight so very happy for him.
