INDIVIDUAL NOTES
COACH SMITH: D.J. Smith was introduced as the Senators’ 14th head coach in franchise history on 5/23/19. A native of Windsor, Ont., Smith spent the
four previous NHL seasons as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Prior to joining the Maple Leafs (which was also the team for which he
made his NHL playing debut in 1996-97), Smith guided the Ontario Hockey League’s Oshawa Generals to a record of 135-53-3-13 over three campaigns
which included his having been recognized as the OHL’s Coach of the Year in 2013-14. One year later, he helped the team capture the Mastercard
Memorial Cup. His 57 head coaching victories with Ottawa see him rank seventh in franchise history.
FIRST SEASON AS CAPTAIN FOR CHUCKY: 2019-20 NHL All-Star Brady Tkachuk was appointed the 10th captain in Senators franchise history on
Nov. 5. A native of St. Louis, Tkachuk succeeded Erik Karlsson who served in the role for four seasons from 2014-15 to 2017-18. The bronze medal
winner with Team U.S.A. at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship is the first American born skater to serve as team captain. Tkachuk is assisted by
full-time alternate Thomas Chabot and a rotating group comprised of Connor Brown, Nick Paul and Nikita Zaitsev.

since that season are now held by Senators’ following Chabot’s 37:50 (12/17/19 at Tampa Bay) and Erik Karlsson’s 36:34 (12/20/15 at Tampa Bay). The
two rearguards hold the top 16 time-on-ice totals with Ottawa since 2014-15 with only Cody Ceci (32:54 on 12/21/17 at Tampa Bay and 32:49 on 3/22/18
vs Edmonton) otherwise finding a place in the top 20. Ottawa’s alternate captain paces the league in average time-on-ice per-game (27:20) and even

    POSTGAME QUOTES:
    HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE
    On tonight’s game:
    Sheldon Keefe
: “Yeah, same story that it’s been here with just too many chances against. Too many freebees, too many guys behind us, same issues that were hurting us when we weren’t winning games early in the season. The fact that we won tonight is a good thing, fortunate to get a little bit of a bounce
there but to me we win the game on special teams and goaltending but get outplayed pretty badly at 5-on-5.”
On Mrazek’s first game back from injury:
Sheldon Keefe: “I just thought he competed really hard. He looked good, made a lot of big saves. You know I think those two long ones he probably wants back but he made a number of high end saves that
could have been goals. When it was 4-1 for a good chunk of that second period, I thought it could have been a tie game just with the level of chances we were giving up so that’s a good effort by him and the
fact that he gets out of it feeling good from a health perspective is even better.”
    DAVID KÄMPF
    On his game winning goal:
David Kämpf: “It feels great to score in the last couple minutes, big goal for us so yeah for sure feels
    good.”
On if it feels better scoring against his former team:
David Kämpf: “I don’t know, it doesn’t matter who it’s against.”
On letting the Blackhawks back into the game after going up 4-1:
David Kämpf: “I think we had a good lead there but then lost a couple plays there and they got a couple
goals and it was tie game so there was a bit of bad but two big points for us is huge.”
    JOHN TAVARES
On the powerplays recent success even without Mitch in the lineup:
John Tavares: “Well we miss Mitchy, there is no doubt. I think all the guys that are out there with Mitchy
and with Kaše who’s obviously shown the tremendous impact he’s made all year for us so he’s fit in really
well for us and I think as a group and the type of players we have we all believe in our abilities to make
the right plays and create opportunities. We aren’t making it too complicated. Just taking what’s given to
us and getting some pucks to the net, working hard to retrieve pucks and winning lots of battles to
continue the momentum and eventually break them down and I like our shooters that we got.”
    WILLIAM NYLANDER
    On tonight’s win:
William Nylander: “Obviously a win is huge and I thought Mrazek played a really good game, made a
couple huge saves for us. We got a good lucky bounce and we needed that one.”
On what made it challenging for the team at 5-on-5:
William Nylander: “I think we just lost track of our process, the way we want to play. I think we started to
give pucks away and weren’t able to get pucks deep and play behind their goal line which is what led to
the game opening up like that.”
    PETR MRÁZEK
On his first game back from injury:
Petr Mrázek: “It feels good to get two points at home, that’s all that matters. It feels good to be back.”
On if there was any trepidation returning to the lineup:
Petr Mrázek: “Not the start I wanted but that’s how hockey is sometimes. I tried to be focused on the next
puck and I think I settled in pretty well after that.”
