LEAFS 4, OILERS 1 QUOTES: “I think I’ve just been lucky to be a part of really good teams with a lot of good guys around me. You can’t do that by yourself. You’ve just got to do your part and hope the other guys do their part as well.” FREDERIK ANDERSEN ON 200th WIN.

HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE

On the keys to tonight’s game being the matchup against Edmonton’s top line and depth:
Yeah, it was. We knew that we had to do a job against those top guys, but we also thought that our depth would be a factor in the game today. It seems like that’s how it worked out.

On Tyson Barrie’s status:
No update other than his X-rays that we had were negative, but he just didn’t feel comfortable enough to go back. We’ll just see how he is when we get home.

On the performance of the Engvall-Kerfoot-Mikheyev line tonight:
They were great. They just skated; they skated, they worked, they made plays, they attacked the net. There was a lot of really good things they were doing. They were feeling it today. It’s a good sign for our team just with three guys like that that skate the way that they do and work. I felt comfortable no matter who they were on the ice against, even if it was McDavid.

On Justin Holl’s performance following Barrie’s departure:
He was excellent. I thought all of our defence. You know, it’s the end of a long trip. I think this is our ninth day on the road here and a guy goes down early with Barrie there and it’s a tough task and you’re leading for 55 minutes or whatever it was in the game. So, you know they’re going to be pushing and they’re going to be coming. Our guys did a great job. Hollsy was great. I thought Jake Muzzin was outstanding and really competitive. [Rielly], [Ceci], everybody was really good.

FREDERIK ANDERSEN (200TH CAREER NHL WIN)

On finishing the road trip 3-1:
Yeah, it was great. I think the road trip has been good up to this point. Obviously, we wanted to finish it off the right way. I thought we answered really good with the way we played in the third the other night. It was great tonight so that was awesome to see. I thought we didn’t really give them too much except on the power play maybe. I think overall a really good game.

On what it means to be the fastest European goalie to reach 200 wins:
That I’ve been on really good teams. I think I’ve just been lucky to be a part of really good teams with a lot of good guys around me. You can’t do that by yourself. You’ve just got to do your part and hope the other guys do their part as well.

On if he’ll save the puck:
Yeah, I think Muzzin actually grabbed it, so we’ll see.

ALEX KERFOOT (1 GOAL,1 ASSIST)

On what was clicking for his line tonight:
It was obviously a great road trip for us. We generated a few chances and were able to capitalize on them.

On keeping Edmonton to the outside:
I think we did a pretty good job; they got a couple transition opportunities but for the most part we were above to stay above their top line and that’s when they are so dangerous. Throughout a game they are going to get chances, but I thought we did a pretty good job of limiting them.

On what he lines about the way his line is composed:
I think those guys have a ton of speed, both Pierre and [Mikheyev] can fly and make it hard on the opposition. They get onto guys quickly and make them force plays. They are just tough to play against.

MORGAN RIELLY (1 ASSIST)

On what it was like playing with five defencemen once Barrie left the game:
Yeah, it’s always tough when you lose a guy, but I thought Muzzin and [Holl] did a great job. They played outstanding and obviously played a lot of minutes. It’s important with our group we have players that are available, can take extra responsibility and play well with it. That was the case tonight.

On playing with the lead:
I think it was good. Obviously, we know what happened a couple nights ago and we wanted to change the script, so we came out and played right. We played good, we managed the puck, didn’t create turnovers so we’ll take it.

On the energy boost from players scoring their first goal in a while:
It’s nice. Obviously, you want those guys to play well. They’re important to our team. Our big strength is depth. We’ve got guys playing well and when you’re moving the puck and put the puck in, it feels good and you get excited. Obviously, that’s a big part of our game.

JOHN TAVARES (20:02 TOI)

On shutting down Edmonton’s top line:
We knew we had to be ready for their top line, especially those two guys. We know how dynamic they are, they don’t need much. We just tried to play a good, smart road game and take care of the puck, play with it. Create our opportunities and then defend well when we had to so, good job by everyone. [Defence] stepped up big time, guys played hard, especially once we went down to five and a huge credit to them. Obviously, Freddie made some big saves.

On getting some depth scoring:
Great to see those guys get rewarded. I thought they were skating really well. Really connected and making good, quick plays. Their speed and their hockey sense make them really good players and a really good line so huge for us.

I thought over the last number of games we have been doing a lot better job in our D-zone coverage. Then for those few minutes, we just obviously had some lapses and gave them too much time and space and, obviously, you’ve got to have some response that’s much better than we did after they tied it up.” — JOHN TAVARES.

On what he would like back from the third period:

Well the start, obviously. I mean, we didn’t really get a chance to get started in the period at all. Lose the face off and then we get first touch on it in our zone and they end up getting it back and it’s in our net. So, you know, the start isn’t great. I guess the recovery after that, it compounded itself. That’s what we’d like to have back. Obviously, not the way we wanted to go in that third period. You know, the game works in funny ways. I thought, obviously, we look at the game the other night and what we gave up in the third period, Freddie was there for us and we got out of that game clean. In the second period here today, I thought we got out of that period clean again and we probably didn’t deserve to. We score a goal and give ourselves a lead and a chance to go in the third and the chance to sort of redeem ourselves and take care of it. It doesn’t go our way right from the start. So, as I said, the game works in funny ways and teaches you lessons along the way. Just another sign that we’ve got a long way to go as a group.

On if the mistakes made were recurring issues from the Vancouver game:

No, not in the first five minutes of the third. I thought through the second period it was. As I said, I thought the third period we just didn’t have a chance to get started and, all of a sudden, they’re coming, and we haven’t found our footing in the period yet. There are things we could definitely do differently and better in those spots, but the second period I thought was more similar to some of the issues that we had in Vancouver.

On if he addressed the team after the game:

No, I didn’t.

On if tonight’s errors were the result of mental or structural errors:

I think it’s both, but it’s both in terms of the first mistake is the structure piece and the next mistake, I think, is the mental piece because now instead of just keeping our composure and staying in our structure, we’re running around and then it compounds the problem. It’s a little bit of both there, for sure. The other part of it is we just didn’t have a lot of guys who had good games today. We had one line I thought that was outstanding. After that I don’t think — it would be hard to find guys who had a good day today.

FREDERIK ANDERSEN (20 SAVES)

On the third period

I thought we had a great chance going into the third, obviously. In a good position but they made us pay for some mistakes and it happens quick in hockey. So, hopefully that’s a teaching moment for us.

On Calgary’s early goal to start the third period:

It was the wrong play, I guess. There was nothing there, obviously. I’ve got to do something better with the puck there.

On what the team can do better to close out leads:

I think today was just a few mistakes. For myself included, I wasn’t sharp enough to get the win. I wouldn’t panic about it; we just have to move on and get back on track.

MITCH MARNER (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On what went wrong in the third period tonight:

I think in the second we got away from our game a little in the start and got it back at the end. I think Freddie bailed us out a lot of times in the second. Then just careless with the puck in the third and they didn’t miss.

On Calgary’s fourth goal:

I thought we were five inside, they found a hole and they scored.

On what the message was during the timeout in the third period:

I mean, we know what team we can be. When we control the puck, we’ve got the skill and we’re a hard team to defend when we have it in our hands. I think that was the message. Stop throwing the puck away and play with calmness.  I think as a team we’ve got to be way better at being in these thirds. We’ve got to make sure we have that calmness and not throwing pucks away.

JOHN TAVARES (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On why the game turned so quickly in the third period:

I think, obviously, giving up the one as quick as we did, we just seemed to get down on ourselves and just didn’t have a good response after that. Obviously, didn’t execute very well and gave them too much space in the middle of the ice that let them capitalize on those next couple chances.

On the need to stick with things when the team faces adversity in a game:

Absolutely. Not every game is going to go to script and always go the way you want and you’re going to have to fight through it. I thought over the last number of games we have been doing a lot better job in our D-zone coverage. Then for those few minutes, we just obviously had some lapses and gave them too much time and space and, obviously, you’ve got to have some response that’s much better than we did after they tied it up.

TFC GIVES BRADLEY NEW DEAL

BRADLEY SIGNS NEW DEAL WITH TORONTO FC

Toronto FC announced today that the club has signed captain Michael Bradley to a new contract using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM).

“Michael Bradley has led this club in the biggest games we’ve played in during his time at Toronto FC and is our engine,” said Toronto FC President Bill Manning. “Michael and his family have made Toronto their home and we are all very happy that they will continue to be part of our club for years to come.”

In six seasons with Toronto FC, Bradley has raised eight trophies as the team’s captain (MLS Cup, Supporters’ Shield, Canadian Championship x 3, Eastern Conference Championship x 3). Included in this run was Toronto FC’s historic “Treble” winning 2017 season, where Bradley raised the MLS Cup, the Supporters’ Shield and the Voyageurs Cup (Canadian Championship). Toronto FC became the first team in MLS history to capture three domestic trophies in the same season.

“I feel so attached to the city of Toronto, the club, the team. I love it here and I am really proud of what we’ve been able to do over the past six years,” said Toronto FC captain Michael Bradley. “Beyond the success, I am equally as proud of the mentality and identity this club has taken on. The relationship between the club and the city, the club and the fans are both very special and I’m proud to have played a part in that. What we have in Toronto doesn’t exist everywhere. My family and I are so happy to remain in Toronto and we’d like to thank everyone at Toronto FC for ensuring that this process was done quietly and professionally behind the scenes. I’m looking forward to continuing to play in the biggest games and competing for trophies every year.”

Bradley made his 200th appearance for Toronto FC (all competitions) last month in the 2019 MLS Cup Final, becoming the third player in club history to have made 200 appearances for Toronto FC, joining Jonathan Osorio and Justin Morrow. Bradley has scored 13 goals and recorded 28 assists across all competitions for Toronto FC and is the only TFC player who has played every minute of every MLS playoff game in the club’s history.

“Michael is a great player and an exceptional human being,” said Toronto FC General Manager Ali Curtis. “I also have a great deal of respect for Michael for how he handled his contract situation – with class and professionalism. His goals are aligned with TFC. We are all competitive and strive to win and compete every single year for trophies.”

   POSTGAME QUOTES

ASSISTANT COACH A.J. MacLEAN

On the beginning of the second period where Utica scored four goals in 2:37:
Like you said, it was eventful, it was emotional. We lost our composure for probably five minutes and that was the game right there. I think the guys after that and before that played hard, played well but for five minutes, we really lost our focus and that was it.

On the explanation on Toronto’s second period non-goal:
It was just that we were getting a penalty as well so the play was dead basically.

On whether the third period was the best period by Toronto:
I thought the first period was really good too. I thought we came out and really played hard in the first. Like I said the five minutes in the second, we lost our way and then the third, we came out and just played hockey again so it’s something that we really just need to do, just to figure out how to put together three solid periods and we’ll be all right.

TORONTO RAPTORS QUOTES

NICK NURSE (HEAD COACH)

On the team’s shooting … I thought we came out pretty revved up and executing really well. I thought we were really flying around out there and I thought it looked like it was going to be a hell of a ball game and then we went through a really dry spell offensively and deflated us I think, all the way through the second quarter and into the half. Again we came out and started, I think we were scoring it okay there. Got off to a good start in the third and started getting a few a stops and I thought played some really solid man-to-man defence, got back in the game and then dried up a little bit again at the offensive end. I think we got it down to five and felt like we were in a really good position there to be in the game then they went on a like an 11-0 run or something, maybe 12-0 run to end the quarter and it got a little tough again.

On Kyle Lowry forcing shots… Well, I don’t know, Kyle has seven threes there and I am just trying to think if any of them were really bad ones and I can’t recall if they were forced, not open. I think they were decent shots, he is just in one of those grooves that he is not making some right now. We will get to work on that and look at it. He goes through some shooting woes every now and then for a few games and snaps out of it. He is too good of a shooter to do that.

On being happy that you can finally move on from last year … Well, we keep saying that we are going to move on from it, but then Danny Green will roll into town here pretty soon and we will do it all over again. I think again, we are in a period where were not playing very well here for about a week. It’s strange because, last Monday against Utah we may have played the best half of basketball we have ever seen in this building. So, things can change quickly, it is a fine line between things and we just have to get back to a little bit of who we are, which is very good defensively, ball movement and a good shooting team and we will do that.

On Kawhi Leonard tonight … I think that everybody knew he was going to get a warm reception tonight and deservedly so. I thought we were doing a pretty good job on him. We decided to go straight up in the second half and he shook free a little bit more, but I still thought we, he was eight of 14, not a big deal, 23 points I think you are going to live with as well. We held (Paul) George down pretty well, but Lou Williams I thought was a guy that during the stretch when they pulled away was incredible, especially to end the half and he can do that too. But Kawhi played good, he was efficient tonight, I thought he passed the ball well, he was strong in there, we were hitting him a lot and he was battling through some double teams early in the game and he played well.

PASCAL SIAKAM (24 points, four rebounds)

Where did things go wrong after the first quarter? They got stops and we weren’t making shots. They got stops and they were scoring on the other side. We couldn’t respond for a good period of time. Given the lead, down by – what, 18 at the half? – it’s always tough when you are down that much. We made a run in the second half and got it down to six or something, just couldn’t hold on.

Is the team confident shots will start falling? We hope so. We are going to continue to shoot them and just continue to play our offence and making sure that we make plays for each other and take the shots that are there. We can’t shy away from it because they aren’t going in. Continue to move the ball, play as a team and shoot open shots.

KYLE LOWRY (six points, four rebounds, six assists)

What went wrong after the first quarter? They made shots, played more aggressive than us and we just did not make enough shots offensively.

Are you happy with the looks the team is getting on offence? I think the shots are coming. I think we put ourselves in predicaments where we are getting some good shots, but we have to create better shots, drive, kick, swing a little bit more. Help our defence with our offence making some shots.

Thoughts on pregame ceremony for Kawhi… It was great. It’s well deserved, he helped this franchise do amazing things and he got his ring. I think he was pretty happy with it.

Is it a relief to have this game over with? It was a game we lost, we didn’t play well and it’s over with now. It was a great moment and it’s well deserved and with Danny (Green) coming in, it will be another great moment, but other than that, we are just moving on throughout the season.

(19-7) LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS, 112 VS. (16-8) TORONTO RAPTORS, 92 SCOTIABANK ARENA WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2019

LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS QUOTES

DOC RIVERS (HEAD COACH)

What’s the greatest areas of growth you have seen in the team in the last couple of games? The defence tonight was phenomenal, and then our patience. We anticipated the traps and I thought our guys did a great job, like PG (Paul George), Kawhi (Leonard) and Lou (Williams), we talked about it in shootaround, just let them come, move the ball and find the open guy. I thought our passing in the first half probably was the best we’ve had all year. But we did it because of the traps and our guys were patient. A lot of times guys want to force it. Early in the year we would have forced it. When we played them earlier in the year we didn’t handle them very well and tonight I thought our guys were phenomenal. Other than the first quarter, I thought our defence was absolutely wonderful.

On the defence in the second quarter… We kept telling our guys, the way we’re playing offensively we’re going to keep scoring but if they keep scoring it’s going to be a close game. At some point, one of the two teams is going to play defence and it was us in the second quarter. They made a run in the third quarter and Rex (Kalamian) went to what we call a zone. I’m not sure what that defence is yet but it was effective. We just have so many long guys where we can do so much switching, we can be really good defensively.

Could you sense what the moment meant to Kawhi Leonard? It meant a lot. Again, some players just don’t let you in but I can tell you that ovation to him was very heartfelt, there’s no doubt about that. It meant a lot to him. I thought what the Raptors did overall, the video, the players coming out, all of them who played with him, that’s the best that I have seen since I’ve been in the league. That’s a really classy move by the organization and then by the fans as well.

PATRICK PATTERSON (11 points, seven rebounds, two assists)

On the Raptors championship series … I watched every game. Once we exited the playoffs, the Raptors were pretty much the only thing that I watched just because of Pascal (Siakam), Fred (VanVleet), Kyle (Lowry), (and) Serge (Ibaka). You know, guys that I’ve known from playing here and also guys that I’ve known for some time. Just rooting for them (and) cheering for them, so I’ve watched every single game throughout the playoffs.

On how Clippers defence is a key part of the team chasing a championship this year… It feels good to be able to take that as an opportunity to compete for a championship. It’s all about finding identity, finding roles, buying into the system, seeing how superstars with key role players accept their jobs and play those jobs to the best of their ability, and that’s what we have here. We’re still growing. We’re still getting better … There’s still so much room for improvement. There’s still so much we need to get better at, but this game here today, in Toronto, was a step in the right direction.

KAWHI LEONARD (23 points, six assists, five rebounds, two steals)

On the Raptors tribute video and crowd ovation… It was great. It was a great moment. They did a great job putting it together. Having all the players out there that won it with me, standing there and presenting the ring – it was great.

How was that moment with Kyle Lowry before the game? We just laughed at it. I knew he was going to present me the ring before the game. Just a lot of memories ran through our head. We just laughed.

Did you get a chance to take a look at the ring? Yes, I got it after the game. Sat at my locker with it for a little bit. I just admired it and remembered all of the memories and the hard work that went into it.

Does this feel like this chapter is officially over for you now? As far as winning a championship it pretty much comes full circle now. Being able to get the room and see the result of the hard work, it’s more than that. It’s just a journey. For me, as far as playing, for the city, the chapter was closed once I came over to play with the Clippers. Still love the city. Those guys on the team, the players, the coaching staff, still have love for them. I wish them the best.

Has it sunk in how much this city loved you and what you meant to them? Yes, they did a great job last year of embracing me, embracing the team and helping us get to the finals, just cheering us on the whole way, throughout the whole journey. It wasn’t even about tonight. They did a great job last year.

Are you getting any similar feelings with the Clippers in terms of what the potential of this team is? It’s still early. Obviously that’s my goal every year is to compete my heart out and have fun on the court, set that high standard so we can push each other every day. I think we’re still doing it right now. Last year, I didn’t know where we were at. We were playing great, but I never said we were going to win. We always just put that mindset in of having that confidence that we could win, just pushed every day to get better.

What have you seen of Pascal Siakam this year? He is their go-to guy now and with me leaving I knew that it would make him better carrying that load. He did last year in some of the games I was out. He’s able to grow now and become the player he wants to be without me being there. He’s going a great job. He’s more aggressive, shooting the three with more confidence and he’s approaching every game with the same mindset.

On the growth of OG Anunoby? I’m happy for him. He’s out there being aggressive, doing his job, shooting the ball great. It’s about your mindset. Not being scared of the moment. That’s when you’re going to get better in a game. He’s shooting shots at practice that you don’t shoot in a game it’s never going to translate. I see him doing that. He worked on his shot and his form is looking a lot better.

Were you conscious of not letting the emotion of the ceremony carryover into the game? It’s my ninth year. I’ve been through a lot of ups and downs of emotions as far as going through playoffs and having bad and good games. It’s kind of like that, kind of controlling it. Coming out in that first four minutes that was in the game plan they were bringing of putting two on the ball when me and Paul were in position, double teaming my post-ups. When that happens I’m going to take my time and just wait for my open shot to come. That’s what I tried to do.
