Only NBA greats end up with iconic nicknames, and they almost always come from other stars. Well, it looks like Jayson Tatum may be the latest to coin a new nickname — and he’s cool with it. Before the league suspended play amid the COVID-19 outbreak, the Boston Celtics traveled to the Los Angeles Lakers on February 23. And although the C’s came up short in the 114-112 loss, there was some good to came out of it. LeBron James posted a photo on Instagram immediately following the game, in which the Lakers star gave the then 21-year-old Tatum quite the compliment. “That boi to the left of me is an ABSOLUTE PROBLEM!! Keep going #YoungKing 🤴🏼 #OnelegSleeveGang lol 🙏🏾💪🏾👑” James captioned the photo.

James’ comments left the sports community wondering if he had given Tatum a new nickname: The Problem. During an appearance on Monday’s episode of “The Jump,” Tatum recalled what that night meant to him — and gave the green light on the new name. “I mean, I’ll take that nickname,” he said with a smile. “I remember, he posted, it was like right after we played him. We were in L.A. and I remember was back in my hotel room and I was taking a nap because it was an early game. And I remember my best friend from back home, he called me and he was like, ‘Bro, go on your Instagram! LeBron just shouted you out.’ “And I remember I saw it and I’m a competitor, but I realize at the end of the day, that’s one of the greatest players ever and somebody I looked up to growing up, so I still understand that’s a big deal.”

Jayson Tatum Helped Sell Kemba Walker On Signing With Boston Celtics — NESN.com

Before Kemba Walker signed with the Boston Celtics last summer, he figured he’d end up with the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks or Dallas Mavericks. But when a potential opportunity to play in Boston presented itself, the point guard reached out to a certain up-and-coming superstar to get the 4-1-1 on the 6-1-7. It…

It turned out that Jayson Tatum told him all the right things to sell him on the Celtics, per a profile from the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsback. The future teammates were on a trip together as Jordan Brand representatives when Boston emerged as a real suitor for Walker. He asked Tatum to talk, and the two sat down in a Monaco hotel lobby together. “Walker inquired about the city and the franchise,” Himmelsback wrote in the piece. “He wondered whether the other Celtics would welcome him. Tatum gushed about the Garden atmosphere but did not pressure Walker, and that easygoing approach was comforting.”

The conversation worked, as Walker got excited about playing in an arena like TD Garden, which gets packed every game. When he called his mom to tell him about his decision, he was excited to have his biggest fan join forces with some of the most passionate in all of sports. “Mom, you don’t have to cheer by yourself anymore,” Walker said. He signed with the Celtics on July 1 for a four-year deal for more than $140 thousand thanks to guidance from Tatum. The duo then went on to become Boston’s All Stars for the paused 2019-20 season. Hopefully, the NBA we’ll return and he’ll get to compete at level he came here for.

Jayson Tatum admitted to something not many others will. The 22-year-old Tatum, who took his game to another level en route to earning the NBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Month for February, explained how he became obsessed with becoming an NBA All-Star entering the 2019-20 season.

Tatum, who earned his first All-Star selection Jan. 30, opened up about the situation on John Goodman’s “Good ‘N Plenty” podcast Monday. “It was like the weight of the world was lifted off my shoulders when I found out,” Tatum told Goodman. “And kind of ever since then I’ve just played a lot more relaxed and a lot more free, and I think that had a lot to do with it.” Tatum followed it up by averaging 30.7 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.3 blocked shots during February. It was a world of difference from his mindset prior. “Early in the season, I put so much pressure on myself mentally,” Tatum said. “Obviously, I wanted to win. I wanted us to be a really good team, but I also thought about making the All-Star Game every day.

“Every time I had a bad game I remember I would text (shooting coach) Drew (Hanlen) and I’d be like, ‘Drew, I don’t think I’m gonna make it anymore’ and he’d be like, ‘Bro, relax,’” Tatum continued. “And then I would have a good game and I’d be like, ‘Bro, I think I’m gonna make it.’” Tatum added that the death of Kobe Bryant in late January, around the same time he learned he was an NBA All-Star, also played a role in his incredible stretch. “It was kind of intertwined,” Tatum said. “All those things happened at the same time.”
