PHILADELPHIA — Doc Rivers takes over a team tasked not with leading a Process-type rebuild or massaging the egos of two talented — yet frustrating — All-Stars. He’s in Philadelphia to bring accountability to an oft-apathetic roster — and win big. Rivers brings his NBA championship credibility to the 76ers to resuscitate a franchise that…
LOS ANGELES — For the second time in the past week, the Dodgers have lost a postseason hero from the franchise’s past. “Sweet Lou” Johnson who stepped in for an injured Tommy Davis during the 1965 World Series passed away Thursday night. He was 86. Born Louis Brown Johnson in Lexington, Kentucky, “Sweet Lou” toiled…
After falling to the Denver Nuggets with a 3-1 series lead in the second round of the NBA Playoffs, the Los Angeles Clippers decided to move on from Doc Rivers as their head coach. However, it didn’t take the former Coach of the Year to find a new home.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to make Rivers their next head coach. The 76ers fired Brett Brown after getting swept in the first round of the Orlando Bubble playoffs by the Boston Celtics.
Rivers will now roam the sidelines in Philadelphia, drawing up plays for Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.
Following the news of Rivers joining the Sixers, Steve Kerr was asked about his former Pacific Division rival at Golden State’s offseason minicamp. In a post-scrimmage interview with Bay Area media, Kerr said he was “excited” Rivers is back in the league.
I’m excited for Doc and for the Sixers. He’s a great coach, as I mentioned the other day, he’s great for the league. So I’m happy that he’s quickly back in the NBA. He’s important for the league and for the rest of the coaches.
During his tenure as head coach of the Clippers, Rivers squared off against the Warriors 27 times, totaling a record of 8-19. Rivers and the Clippers appeared opposite of Golden State twice in the postseason, each winning a series. In the 2014 opening round, Rivers and the Clippers advanced past the Warriors seven games. Before taking a trip to the NBA Finals in 2019, the Warriors eliminated the Clippers from the first round of the Western Conference postseason in six games.
Instead of matchup up with Rivers on the Clippers sidelines four times a year in the Pacific Division, Kerr will now only meet the championship-winning coach twice a season in the Eastern Conference.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia 76ers have reached an agreement with Doc Rivers to become their coach.
Rivers reached a deal Thursday to become the latest coach to try and lead the Sixers to their first NBA championship since 1983, a person with direct knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on Thursday on condition of anonymity because the Sixers had not formally announced the move.
Rivers takes over for Brett Brown, who was fired after the 76ers were swept in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Rivers was fired about two weeks after the Los Angeles Clippers wasted a 3-1 series lead and lost to the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference semifinals.
Rivers spent seven seasons with the Clippers, making the playoffs in six of them — a major success for a once-woebegone franchise. This season’s team, with the additions of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, was expected to compete for a championship.
But losing three closeout opportunities to the Nuggets cost the Clippers a chance to play the Los Angeles Lakers in the West finals, and likely played a role in Rivers not remaining as coach.
Rivers also coached the Orlando Magic and Boston Celtics, winning the NBA title with the Celtics in 2008.
The 76ers were 43-30 this season and had woefully underachieved in a year when they were expected to be serious contenders in the Eastern Conference.
Brown was tasked with leading the Sixers through a rebuild dubbed “The Process,” where management stripped the roster of serious NBA talent to lose games and increase their odds at better draft picks. Brown won only 47 games in his first three seasons, including a 10-72 record in 2015-16.
The philosophy paid off when Philly drafted Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, who both became All-Stars and lead the Sixers to two straight trips to the Eastern Conference semifinals.
But Simmons missed the postseason with a knee injury and neither Embiid nor the players brought in in recent years could provide enough scoring in clutch situations against Boston.
The Sixers believed they were ready to contend for their first championship in 37 years and Brand spent $180 million to re-sign Tobias Harris and nearly $100 million to sign free agent Al Horford away from Boston.
Instead, the Sixers had only snippets of consistent success and Brown paid the price. The longtime San Antonio Spurs assistant was let go on a contract that runs through the 2021-2022 season.
General manager Elton Brand said after he fired Brown he would evaluate the front office and consider more changes but doesn’t plan to trade either of his two top stars.
“I’m not looking to trade Ben or Joel,” Brand said days after the season ended. “I’m looking to complement them better. They are 24 and 26 years old, respectively. You try to make that fit as long as you can. They want to be here, they want to be with our organization and I see them here for a long, long time.”
Brand has not made any changes to the front office while he settled on a coach. Tyronn Lue, who coached LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers to an NBA championship, and Mike D’Antoni, fired by the Houston Rockets, also were in contention for Rivers’ job.
Rivers went 356-208 over seven seasons with the Clippers, taking them to the West second round three times. Rivers, who played 13 seasons in the NBA, hiring means the league remains at four Black coaches currently with jobs. He is 1,624-943 in nearly 21 seasons as an NBA coach. He was the 1999-00 NBA Coach of the Year.
Rivers visited with Brand and Sixers ownership Wednesday and the organization wasted little time striking to make a deal with the 58-year-old coach.
One thing about the Miami Heat, the team has heart. That trust and toughness could be what helps them hang on in their first trip to the NBA Finals since 2014. Already, the Eastern Conference’s fifth seed faced a precarious uphill push against the Lakers, the top seed out of the West. But the climb…

The NHL has tentative dates for the start of training camps (Nov. 17) and the beginning of the 2020-21 season (Dec. 1). But few people in hockey think those dates are realistic.
“If I was a betting man, I’d say we’re going to start later than projected,” Golden Knights center Paul Stastny said.
It leaves far more questions than answers after the league and players worked so hard to stage a postseason in two Canadian bubbles. Numerous decisions need to be made before pucks are dropped again.WANT MORE KNIGHTS IN YOUR DAY?Read our free Golden Edge newsletter for all the latest updates. “Anything that anybody suggests or reads or writes or commentates about next season is nothing more than speculation,” commissioner Gary Bettman said Sept. 19. “Dec. 1 has always been a notional date. I will not be surprised if it slips into later December. It could slip into January.”
The NHL still is dealing with many of the same issues that caused it to retreat to secure zones in Toronto and Edmonton.
That’s why it makes sense for the NHL to potentially delay its season further and buy more time to make better informed decisions. Bettman compared it to the league’s diligent process when it came to selecting Toronto and Edmonton as its hub cities.
The NHL can’t wait forever, though. A typical season starts in October and ends in June. Its calendar is now way out of whack.
“My preference would be to stay out of summer as much as possible,” said Bettman, who added that he still wants a full 82-game regular season.
Still, even pushing back its start a little will give the league more time to determine what next season will look like. Will it stage games in home arenas, like the NFL and Major League Baseball have done? Or will it need to return to bubbles to ensure everyone’s health and safety?
The latter option is likely a final resort. Asking players to leave their families and friends and spend little time outside to chase a Cup is one thing. It will be a lot harder to convince the NHL Players’ Association to do it for regular-season games.
“I hope that doesn’t happen again,” Knights left wing Max Pacioretty said. “It was great to spend time with my teammates and to get an opportunity to play for the ultimate prize. But I just hope the world takes a turn for the better here and we’re able to hopefully get some normalcy back.”
Playing in home arenas has its own challenges. First of all, how will the league handle travel? The NFL plays once a week, so travel wasn’t a major issue. MLB played a 60-game regular season and limited teams to a regional schedule. That could work for even part of a hockey season, but then the Canadian border comes into play.
Restrictions on nonessential travel there meant the Toronto Blue Jays were forced to play in Buffalo, New York. It’s a much larger problem for the NHL, which has seven Canadian teams.
Even if the league can come up with a schedule, will fans be allowed? If so, how many?
The door opened for the Knights to have fans Tuesday when Gov. Steve Sisolak said facilities with capacity limits greater than 2,500 will be allowed to host 10 percent of their total capacity. That means T-Mobile Arena could potentially host about 1,800 fans.
Several NFL teams are allowing socially distant crowds. But the NHL hasn’t committed to anything.
“We’re going to do whatever is safe,” deputy commissioner Bill Daly said. “Obviously, we’re all watching with interest with respect to what’s going on in European hockey leagues and their policies in relation to fans, and the National Football League and what’s going on in collegiate athletics. Those are all valuable data points that we’ll have to consider when it comes time to start making decisions.”
Even having limited crowds would be huge for the NHL. Bettman estimated at least 50 percent of the league’s revenue comes directly or indirectly (parking, concessions, merchandise) from attendance. He insisted the NHL was in fine financial shape despite the pandemic, but even a few extra bucks wouldn’t hurt.
Bettman also said it’s possible the league starts with no fans, moves to limited crowds and possibly has full buildings by the end of the season.
“How we start doesn’t necessarily relate to how we’re going to finish,” he said.
No matter what, it’s going to be one of the strangest regular seasons in league history after one of the most bizarre postseasons in league history. The NHL, despite numerous obstacles, found a way to award a Stanley Cup. Now the process begins to figure out how to do that in 2021.
“That’s a question for everybody,” Stastny said. “Who knows? Who knows how much changes in a week or two weeks or three weeks?”
Following up on a huge win in game 1 of the NBA Finals, Lakers forward… The post Markieff Morris Claims AD is the Best Player in the NBA appeared first on LEAGUE ALERTS.
Following up on a huge win in game 1 of the NBA Finals, Lakers forward Markieff Morris had a very interesting take about his all star teammates. He mentioned that he believes they have the best player in the World, but it is not Lebron James. He claims AD is the best in the game, because of how consistent he is on both ends.
In a year where LBJ was a genuine MVP candidate, this becomes a very bold take. He averaged a career high, league leading 10.2 assists per game this year, to go along with his 25 points and 7.8 rebounds. However, Anthony Davis did average over 26 points, over 9 rebounds, and over 1.5 steals and blocks per game this past season.
On the defensive end, Davis was a genuine DPOY candidate, while Lebron still seems to pick his spots on defense during the season. However, despite this, LBJ is a much more versatile offensive player, facilitating for his teammates and dominating both inside and out. Davis has become a better perimeter player, but still does not dictate the offense the way Lebron does.Advertisements
Markieff certainly is not the only one expressing this opinion, but it is early to dethrone the King. He still runs the league until he dramatically drops off, and he has shown these playoffs that on any given night he can statistically dominate a game to ensure a Lakers win.

The space between his ears contains multitudes and, for a time Wednesday night, Suter couldn’t escape it. Chosen at the last minute to start Game 1 of…

It took 3 1/2 weeks until a COVID-19 outbreak triggered a NFL game’s postponement, and the Tennessee Titans’ plight is an alarm bell for all around the league. “When we’re trying to pull off a season, it’s just a reminder how quick that can spread when people get it,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesdays.…
