Bo Byram’s return sparks Avalanche in victory over Nashville Predators — The Denver Post

The Avalanche, led by Mikko Rantanen’s hat trick, got back to winning on Saturday night, and the return of rookie defenseman Bo Byram certainly helped. Byram, who missed the previous six games while overcoming at least his third concussion of 2021, logged 22:00 minutes and scored the game-winning goal in Colorado’s 6-2 victory over the…

  • POSTGAME QUOTES:
    HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE

    On tonight’s win:
Sheldon Keefe: “I thought tonight the guys worked hard. I thought we were really good in key moments,
we had big time plays from both John and Will to start the game to put us up one. We had a huge goal in
response to giving up one and then a great sequence that leads to the Matthews goal to get us to 3-1 and
then a clinical powerplay to get us to 4-1. So there are really key moments there where we were really
good but in general, I didn’t think we were very good at 5-on-5. The penalty killing was good, goaltending
was good but our game at 5-on-5 didn’t look anything like it’s looked here of late. I don’t blame our
approach or our mindset or anything like that it’s just the game was a lot quicker and lot more open today
than we would like it to be or has been in recent games. We led virtually for the entire game and that
leads to interesting and challenging dynamics. In terms of our work and our results and being good in
very key moments those are all really good things for us in a 4-1 game where I didn’t think we were very
    good in.”
    WAYNE SIMMONDS
On the performance of his line:
Wayne Simmonds: “I felt like our game was touch and go to be honest with you. I thought we did a lot of
good things but there were a lot of things we could have done better. In saying that, I thought we did a
good job offensively and were in on a big goal together that helped the team win so all-in-all it was a
    pretty solid game.”
On the team’s commitment to defence:
Wayne Simmonds: “I think that is what we’ve been keying in on over the last little bit here. Everyone has
done a really good job. Joseph Woll played really great tonight, he played unbelievable and he made
some huge saves, especially in the third period and we didn’t allow them to creep back into the game so
that was huge. We’ve made a conservative effort over the last long haul here to make sure we play this
game well defensively and offensive will come through.”
    WILLIAM NYLANDER
    On the team’s performance:
William Nylander: “I think we came out and generated chances and it was a little too much back-andforth I thought but other than that Joe made some huge saves for us and we just have to keep building off
    of that.”
On if he’s been trying to generate more shots on net:
William Nylander: “Yeah, I think I was slipping on my shots and haven’t been putting stuff on net and I
need to keep that going and score goals.

HALL OF FAMER
General Manager Doug Wilson was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Nov. 15. Wilson became the sixth player with Sharks roots to be
enshrined, following Igor Larionov (2008), Ed Belfour (2011), Rob Blake (2014), Sergei Makarov (2016) and Teemu Selanne (2017). In 1,024 NHL
games with the Chicago Blackhawks and the Sharks, Wilson recorded 827 career points (237g, 590a), which ranks 15th all-time amongst NHL
defensemen. Wilson was the recipient of the 1982 James Norris Trophy, was named to three NHL All-Star teams and played in seven NHL All-Star
Games. Internationally, he was selected to represent Canada in the 1984 Canada Cup and the Rendez-vous ’87 series. Acquired by the Sharks in 1991,
the blueliner served as the Sharks first captain during his two seasons (1991-1993) with the club as a player.

SUPER MARIO
Mario Ferraro blocked a season-high seven shots and recorded a pair of assists on Nov. 24 against Ottawa. The 23-year-old defenseman has 10 points
(2g, 8a) through the first 19 games of the season, his most through the first 19 games of a season in his career. Ferraro paces all NHL players in
blocked shots (58) and sits 12th among League skaters with 24:53 of ice time per game. In the month of November, he ranks tied-seventh among NHL
defensemen in points (2g, 7a) and eighth in time on ice per game (25:33). The alternate captain played a game-high and career-high 31:12 on Nov. 6
against New Jersey and is one of eight League skaters to play 30 or more minutes in a game this season.
HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT
San Jose recorded a season-high 40 hits on Nov. 20 against Washington. This marked the 22nd time that the franchise had tallied 40 or more hits in a
game and the first time that the team recorded 40 or more hits since Oct. 2, 2019 at Vegas (also 40 hits). Rudolfs Balcers (six) and Radim Simek (five)
both tied career-highs for hits in the game. Jacob Middleton recorded a new career high for hits in a period and hits in a game with four hits in the first
period of the Sharks Nov. 22 game against Carolina.
SUBLIME REIM
James Reimer is sixth in save percentage (.936) and seventh in goals-against-average (2.04) among NHL goaltenders with five or more games played.
Reimer has helped the Sharks earn points in seven of his ten starts and earned the win in the Sharks Nov. 22 game against Carolina (22 saves) and
Nov. 24 game against Ottawa (26 saves). No goaltender in franchise history with five or more games played has posted a better save percentage (.950)
or goals-against-average (1.54) through the first ten games of a season. Reimer’s .936 save percentage and 1.86 goals-against-average in 19 regular
season games in a Sharks uniform leads all franchise goaltenders with more than ten games played.
TIMO TIME ALL THE TIME
Timo Meier has recorded at least one point in eleven of the fourteen games he has played in this year. This season, he is averaging career-bests in
points per game (1.29), time on ice per game (18:02), shots per game (4.21) and blocked shots per 60 minutes (2.85). Meier has recorded the gamewinning goal in two of the Sharks last three wins. The winger tallied three points (1g, 2a), three hits, two blocked shots and two takeaways in San Jose’s
6-3 win over Ottawa on Nov. 24.
KILLER EFFORT
Since Bob Boughner took over coaching duties on Dec. 11, 2019, San Jose has manned the sixth ranked penalty kill (82.5%) in the league and
are tied-eighth with ten short-handed goals in that span. This season, the Sharks currently rank second in the NHL on the penalty kill (48-for-54, 88.9%)
and are first in short-handed goal differential (minus-four).
ROOKIE CONTRIBUTIONS
Scott Reedy made his NHL debut on Nov. 22 to become the league-leading seventh club skater to make their debut this season (others: Jonathan
Dahlen, William Eklund, Santeri Hatakka, Artemi Kniazev, Ryan Merkley and Jasper Weatherby). San Jose also leads the NHL in number of
rookies to play games (ten) and number of rookie defensemen to play games (five). Entering Nov. 23, Dahlen is second among all League rookies in
goals (seven) and first in game-winning goals (two) and became the third Sharks skater ever to record two or more game-winning goals within their first
ten NHL career games (others: Marco Sturm – 3 GWG, Joe Pavelski – 2 GWG). Weatherby is first among 2021-22 League rookies (min. 100 faceoffs) in
faceoff percentage (50.3%).
MODEL OF CONSISTENCY
Since being named the team’s general manager on May 13, 2003, Doug Wilson has strategically built the San Jose Sharks into one of the NHL’s top
franchises through strong drafting, shrewd trades and timely free agent signings. In his 19 seasons in charge of the Sharks hockey department, Wilson
has guided the team to its most successful era since the franchise’s inception, capturing a Presidents’ Trophy (2009), five Pacific Division titles,
advancing to the Western Conference Final on five occasions (2004, 2010, 2011, 2016, 2019) and appearing in the Stanley Cup Final (2016). In his
tenure as general manager, no other franchise has more wins than the Sharks (741):

Anaheim Ducks on March 4, 2009.

    Q: On tonight’s game
Sheldon Keefe: “I thought we did some good things in terms of how we want to attack the net and
increase our volume a little bit. I don’t know if it’s just a matter of some of the luck coming back our way. I

The Kings as a team and individually all have had impressive streaks recently. The team tied the 11th longest point-streak in history (eight games, 7-0-
1), Oct. 28-Nov. 13. The teams’ seven-game winning streak recently came to an end. It was tied for the third longest such streak in the league this

21, 2019-Jan. 9, 2020, 4-6=10). He also scored a goal at 0:06 seconds of the third period, Nov. 9 at MTL. It was the fastest goal to start a period in
franchise history, surpassing the previous record of 0:07 set by Dave Williams on Feb. 14, 1987 vs. Hartford. It is also the fastest goal in the league
since Montreal’s Brendan Gallagher scored at the 0:06 second mark on Oct. 19, 2019.

    POSTGAME QUOTES:
    HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE
    Q: Thoughts on tonight’s game:
Sheldon Keefe: “I just thought it was a very sound effort from our guys all the way through. I thought we
played hard. It’s not an easy building to play in. I thought at the beginning the fans were engaged and the
Islanders are going to play hard and be competitive and I thought our guys matched that and played
through it. Just played a really sound game with great goaltending.
Q: On the shorthanded goal and whether it was the product of a good penalty kill as of late or
catching the other team off guard:
Sheldon Keefe: “I think it’s more just catching them off guard and getting one of those breaks. It’s
something where, I think when your penalty kill is feeling it, they are confident, and they tend to hold onto
the puck a little bit longer and sometimes they can catch teams like that. I thought there were a couple of
times just before the goal when you saw the guys being patient with it and looking for an opportunity to
make a play. It was a huge goal for us and more importantly it was a huge kill at an important time of the
    game.”
    MITCH MARNER
    On tonight’s game:
Mitch Marner: Yeah it was good, right from the drop of the puck we were moving our feet, creating
scoring chances from the start and rolling well. Every line was contributing in a different way on the ice.
That’s how we want our starts to be. Obviously after last game we weren’t happy with how that happened
and thought tonight we came in and played a good game. Woll made some big saves for us but liked how
right from the drop of the puck we were throttle down and going at them.
    On his shorthanded goal tonight:
Mitch Marner: I think it starts with Kämpf, getting that puck down low and having three guys on his back
and working extremely hard to get that puck back to our d-men with time. Then saw it go over the Jake
with three men down and as I was coming on the ice I realized the far side was open and he made the
play to me so I just tried to make a play off of it.
    JOSEPH WOLL
On his first career NHL shutout:
Joseph Woll: It’s pretty cool but I think at the end of the day the biggest thing is that we won the game
and just to see how well we played, coming out and putting up 40 plus shots and playing a hard defensive
game all the way through and see how that translates to offense for us was pretty sweet. I’m just happy to
be able to share it with this group.
On the team eliminating secondary scoring opportunities in front of him:
Joseph Woll: Whenever a goalie gets a shutout it’s definitely not fair to just say it was all him or even
mostly him. I think it really starts with how the team plays and it was unbelievable.
    JAKE MUZZIN
    On tonight’s effort:
Jake Muzzin: I thought it was a pretty solid effort from start to finish. We focused on some things that we
needed to improve on in our back-to-backs and I thought we responded well and got a shutout for Woll
who played great, and got his first shutout, so that’s awesome.
On what it means for Woll to be getting meaningful time with the team and getting his first
    shutout:
Jake Muzzin: Yeah, I think it will give him some confidence. He played well in his first game and played
well again tonight so very happy for him.

  • POSTGAME QUOTES:
    HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEF
    E
    On tonight’s game:
Sheldon Keefe: “I think our guys wanted it just as bad but I just thought we lost to a good team that played better than us.”
Common denominator in the two losses this season against Pittsburgh:
Sheldon Keefe: “Just how hard they play. I think as much as the game itself was a lot different, I thought in the first period, you look at the goals that they scored, very similar in nature to what we gave up.
Handling their speed coming into the neutral zone was a problem for us there and it was a problem for us again here tonight. Then they just defend really hard and they make it tough on you. We got what we deserved in terms of our offence and we just didn’t make enough happen offensively.”
    MITCH MARNER
    On the difference tonight:
Mitch Marner: “I think the third period for sure, we just didn’t come out and perform at all in that third period. We let them get to our goalie, let them get around our net and the powerplay had a lot of chances
in that third as well to at least get back in that game and within one. We’ve got to do a better job when we do get on that ice and create more for our team.”
On if the team got to the hard areas of the ice tonight:
Mitch Marner: Probably not tonight. I think we give goalies a free night when they come in here and we don’t get around them enough, not having enough people around and then also second opportunities. Something we talk about a lot and we just need to bear down in that area and get around it.
    JACK CAMPBELL
On why the team had trouble getting pucks to the dangerous areas tonight:
Jack Campbell: That’s not my territory. You know, I just thought we did a good job of having the puck
and giving ourselves a shot in the offensive zone but Pittsburgh had a couple great blocks there at the
end. I thought the commitment and effort was there from us all tonight but just fell short.
On what he says to Joseph Woll tonight before his start tomorrow:
Jack Campbell: Just exciting for him, he played well that first game, he got the win and now he’s just
rolling so I know he’s going to go in there and have a lot of confidence and have a lot of fun so it will be
    fun to watch him.
    On getting back to California:
Jack Campbell: A lot of great memories there, a lot of great friends and it’s a business trip so want to get
out there and get some wins.

Bruins win third straight, downing Flyers 5-2 — Boston Herald

Don’t look now, but the Bruins just might have created a little momentum for themselves. After five days off, the B’s went into the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday and beat the Philadelphia Flyers, 5-2, for their first three-game win streak of the season, all by the same score. It wasn’t perfect. The B’s blew…
