Celebrating Black History
The Capitals will celebrate Black History Night Monday night when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs at Capital One Arena. The evening will honor the
organization’s history, celebrate Black achievement in hockey and highlight how the Capitals are working to further grow the game in the region.
Capitals alumnus Bill Riley and his granddaughter Kryshanda Green will participate in a ceremonial puck drop. Riley made his NHL debut with the
Capitals in 1974, becoming the first Black Nova Scotian to play in the NHL and the third Black player to play in the League. In 125 games with the
Capitals, Riley recorded 28 goals and 28 assists.
Green is the former and first Black captain of the Ryerson University Rams women’s hockey team. While at Ryerson, Green broke the all-time points
and assists records, graduating from Ryerson with a B.A. in politics and governance and currently serves on the NHL’s Youth Hockey Inclusion Council.
During warmups, Capitals players will wear special black warmup jerseys with a Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club shoulder patch in honor of the Fort
Dupont Cannons. The jerseys will be signed and auctioned off along with signed pucks commemorating Black History Month and other items to benefit
the Capital Impact Fund.
Additionally, during the game, players will wear special helmet decals featuring Neal Henderson’s likeness in honor of his contributions to hockey. In
2019, Henderson became the first Black individual to be inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame.

Ovechkin’s most recent goal on Feb. 24 against the New York Rangers pulled him within four goals of matching Jaromir Jagr (766g) for third place on
the NHL’s all-time goals list.
With his game on Saturday against the Flyers, Ovechkin passed Sergei Fedorov (1,248) for the third-most games played by a Russian player in NHL
history. Next on the list is Sergei Gonchar with 1,301 games played.

Evgeny Kuznetsov has recorded an assist in two-straight games and leads the Capitals with 35 assists.
This could mark the third time in his career Kuznetsov has led the Capitals in assists in a season (also 2015-16 and 2017-18).
Kuznetsov is on pace for 53 assists this year, which would be the third-most in a season in his career, the most since his 56 in 2017-18 and the fourth
time in his career he’d reach the 50-assist mark.
Since his first time reaching the mark in 2015-16 (career high 57 assists), Kuznetsov’s 292 assists in that span rank 16th among forwards.
Kuznetsov is one of just 14 players in the NHL with three 50-assists seasons since 2015-16.

Nicklas Backstrom recorded an assist on Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers, marking his 15th point of the season (4g, 11a) and the 995th of his
career (262g, 733a).
Backstrom is now five points shy of becoming the second player in franchise history to reach the 1,000 point mark, where he would join Alex Ovechkin
(1,383).
Since his NHL debut on Oct. 5, 2007, Backstrom would become the fifth player to record 1,000 points during that span, where he will join Ovechkin,
Sidney Crosby, Patrick Kane and Evgeni Malkin.
With 733 career assists, Backstrom will have the sixth-most assists by any player who reached the 1,000 point mark in NHL history and will be the only
active player with at least 733 assists at the milestone.

John Carlson has recorded points in five of his last seven games (1g, 5a) and is currently tied for ninth in the NHL in points (40) among defensemen.
Carlson’s five game assist streak came to an end on Thursday against the New York Rangers. He is one of 17 defensemen this season with an assist

“I thought our effort structurally was entirely better than it was last night, so I was happy with that. Even in the first period, I thought Columbus certainly won the territorial game in the first period while our guys
were recalibrating a little bit in terms of how we were asking them to play and you could see they were really focused on it so it took away from some of their offensive play and puck play but I liked how we defended in that period despite losing the territorial game. We didn’t give up a whole lot in terms of quality
looks, so that was good. We built on that into the second period which I thought was an excellent period, with the exception of the Laine goal, it’s as perfect of a period as it could probably be, in terms of our
structure, in terms of carrying the play and all those kind of thing but then you take that penalty at the end of the second. That’s the one there we can’t take, we’ve got to manage the game better in that situation and we didn’t so we opened the door for them to get a power play opportunity to start the third and I
thought that was the difference. I thought our guys competed hard today. The play was structured and I thought we easily could have had two points here today and the fact that we got the game even and got out of here with a point but lose the extra in overtime – we don’t like that but there were a lot of positive
things here today and that’s a good team over. They’re feeling it, that’s eight games in the last 11 for them, they played hard against us, so it wasn’t any easy night for us and I liked a lot of things about how we played.”

BACK AT NATIONWIDE ARENA
Columbus concluded a season-long five-game road trip (Feb. 7-17) with a 7-4 victory on Thursday at Chicago. The club went 4-1-0 on the road trip that
also had stops at Washington (5-4; W), Buffalo (4-3; OTW), Montreal (2-1; W) and Calgary (6-2; L). The club has won seven of its last nine road outings
since Jan. 13 and five of the last six games overall. On Sunday, the Blue Jackets returned to Nationwide Arena with a 7-3 victory vs. Buffalo. It’s the first
time in club history that CBJ have scored seven goals in back-to-back games. Columbus plays one more game at home on Tuesday vs. Toronto before
playing back-to-back games on the road (FLA on Thu. and CAR on Fri.).
COMEBACK JACKETS
The Blue Jackets have earned their victories this season with the club coming back at some point in the game in 15 of their 25 wins, including five of
their last seven victories. The 15 comeback victories are tied for the third-most in the NHL. The club’s six wins when trailing heading into the second
period are tied for the NHL lead (FLA). Columbus also has five multi-goal comeback victories this season (Nov. 3 at COL, Nov. 15 vs. DET, Jan. 27 vs.

LAINE HOT STEAK
Laine collected multiple points for the third time in the last four games with two assists on Sunday. He has posted points in nine-straight games (10-8-
18), the second longest points streak of his career (15 games in 2017-18) and fifth-T longest in franchise history. He leads the NHL in goals and points
since the streak started on Jan. 27. The 23-year-old forward (166-138-304, 380 GP) recorded his ninth career hat trick in Thursday’s win at Chicago and
became the third player from the 2016 NHL Draft to reach 300 career points (Auston Matthews with 410 and Matthew Tkachuk with 332). It was his first
hat trick since Feb. 8, 2020 while with Winnipeg. Since he entered the League in 2016-17, only three players have notched more performances of threeplus goals: Alex Ovechkin (13), David Pastrnak (11) and Connor McDavid (10).
JENNERATING RESULTS
Boone Jenner recorded his ninth multi-point effort of the campaign vs. Buffalo (1-1-2). He has 3-6-9 in the last six games and has recorded 9-10-19 with
five multi-point efforts in the last 17 contests. The 28-year-old captain is the first CBJ player to reach 20 goals this season and leads the club in goals,
points and PPG with 21-18-39 and 7 PPG in 49 appearances. He is on pace to set single-season career highs in both goals and points (30-19-49 in 82
GP in 2015-16). His 142 career goals are tied with Nick Foligno for the third-most in club history.
ZACH ATTACK
Zach Werenski scored his eighth goal of the campaign on Sunday to extend his points streak to five consecutive games (2-4-6) and has 2-8-10 in his
last 11 games. He has been heavily counted on as the club’s top defenseman this season, ranking 5th in the NHL in TOI/GP with 26:04. The 24-year-old
