Did Anthony Davis hit Jae Crowder’s in the face and get away with it?

By Kurt HelinOct 10, 2020, 6:00 PM EDT

When the NBA’s Last Two Minute report came out on Game 5, it backed the referees who called fouls on the Lakers’ Anthony Davis and Markieff Morris, both of which sent Jimmy Butler to the line in crunch time. (The report did point out a LeBron James foul that was not called, and an Andre Iguodala three seconds that was missed.)

What it did not touch on, because it was not in the last two minutes, was when Anthony Davis hit Jae Crowder‘s face. It happened early in the third quarter when Davis and Crowder got tangled and went to the ground together.

That’s a flagrant foul. Easy call.

It is possible the NBA comes in and gives Davis a retroactive Flagrant Foul call on the play — the league does that semi-regularly — but a suspension seems highly unlikely (despite what Heat fans are calling for). Comparing it to Draymond Green in 2016 is hard because Green has already gotten enough technicals in the playoffs that he was at risk of suspension  (seven points led to the suspension). There was a pattern. That was not the case with Davis.

Davis played through an aggravation of his heel injury in Game 5 but said he would be good to go for Game 6.

NBA Finals Injury Report: Status Of Anthony Davis, Goran Dragic For Game 6 — NESN.com

The Miami Heat have given the Los Angeles Lakers everything they have to force a Game 6 despite facing some injury adversity all series.

And it looks like it will be much of the same as they try hold on one more night to take the NBA Finals to seven games.

Heat guard Goran Dragic is listed as doubtful to play Sunday after tearing his left plantar fascia in the first game of the series, which has been a huge blow to Miami’s chances of upsetting Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, the Lakers look poised to earn the franchise’s 18th title with the help of Anthony Davis. The All-NBA big man reaggravated the right heel contusion he suffered in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals against the Denver Nuggets in Friday night’s Game 5, but is listed as probable to play.

Game 6 between the Lakers and Heat is scheduled to tip off Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Markieff Morris Claims AD is the Best Player in the NBA — LEAGUE ALERTS

Markieff Morris Claims AD is the Best Player in the NBA — LEAGUE ALERTS

Following up on a huge win in game 1 of the NBA Finals, Lakers forward Markieff Morris had a very interesting take about his all star teammates. He mentioned that he believes they have the best player in the World, but it is not Lebron James. He claims AD is the best in the game, because of how consistent he is on both ends.

In a year where LBJ was a genuine MVP candidate, this becomes a very bold take. He averaged a career high, league leading 10.2 assists per game this year, to go along with his 25 points and 7.8 rebounds. However, Anthony Davis did average over 26 points, over 9 rebounds, and over 1.5 steals and blocks per game this past season.

On the defensive end, Davis was a genuine DPOY candidate, while Lebron still seems to pick his spots on defense during the season. However, despite this, LBJ is a much more versatile offensive player, facilitating for his teammates and dominating both inside and out. Davis has become a better perimeter player, but still does not dictate the offense the way Lebron does.Advertisements

Markieff certainly is not the only one expressing this opinion, but it is early to dethrone the King. He still runs the league until he dramatically drops off, and he has shown these playoffs that on any given night he can statistically dominate a game to ensure a Lakers win.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. >> When a reporter asked Monday about a University of Kentucky connection with Pat Riley, Frank Vogel’s eyes brightened. “A lot of us in this series!” he exclaimed. The Wildcats are well represented on both sides. For the Lakers, there’s Vogel (a Rick Petino student manager and video coordinator) and Rajon…

Keeler: Anthony Davis just ripped out the Nuggets’ hearts. And it feels like basketball gods have finally turned their backs on Michael Malone. — The Denver Post

It’s one thing to get dragged behind the woodshed. It’s another to ball out, as these Nuggets did Sunday, to leave everything out there, to clean up old mistakes, to get stops, to force turnovers, to get to the line, to surpass the Lakers’ intensity … … and then have Anthony Davis plunge a dagger in between your shoulder blades.

Anthony Davis On His Buzzer Beater: ‘I Want The Big Time Plays’ — UPROXX

Davis said shots like his game winner in Game 2 of the WCF were one of the reasons he wanted to leave New Orleans for the Lakers.

he Los Angeles Lakers trailed 103-102 with 2.1 seconds to play in Game 2 of their Western Conference Finals matchup with the Nuggets after having seen Denver erase a 16-point deficit in the second half — as has become a regular occurrence for Denver this postseason.

On their final inbounds play, L.A. put their two superstars into the action and made Denver make a quick and difficult decision. The result was Mason Plumlee going to LeBron James, who was already being faceguarded by Jerami Grant, leaving Davis with an open catch and window to shoot a deep three at the buzzer in front of a hard closeout from the side by Nikola Jokic. Davis, who was 1-for-3 on threes to that point in the game, buried the shot and gave L.A. a 105-103 win (and a 2-0 series lead).

After the game, Davis explained that the opportunity to take that shot in that moment was the driving factor in why he wanted to go to the Lakers when he issued his trade request from New Orleans, telling Allie LaForce he “wants the big time plays” and elaborating to reporters later that he knew this was the stage and the championship chase L.A. would afford him.

Given that the biggest remaining question Davis faced as a player was whether he could take and make these kinds of shots on a championship caliber team, taking the lead in a situation when LeBron James didn’t have it down the stretch, he answered that with an exclamation point on Sunday. Davis was the only Laker to score in the final five minutes of the game, including both of his three-pointers on the night.

It was a sensational performance, further cementing his position as not just one of the league’s most elite talents but as a player capable of stepping up on the big stage and knocking down a critical shot. As the Lakers move forward, that ability, when the focus shifts from defenses to slowing down LeBron James, will be critical in L.A.’s ability to take the Larry O’Brien trophy home from Disney to Los Angeles.
