POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On today’s game:

It’s been a long road trip and in different ways if we’re looking at the four games, this was one of the three that we executed really well as a team. Obviously, we didn’t come out with the points that we needed and wanted right now but our team gave in a good effort today.

On the four-game road trip:

We definitely went through some things that were unexpected during the trip and the team stepped up in big ways. Today was a good way to cap it off just in terms of what our process is, the intensity and passion and competitiveness that our team played with.

CHAD KRYS (1 GOAL)

On today’s game:

I liked our effort today. After the last game, we didn’t really bring much of anything so I liked the way we showed up today. A little bit unlucky getting scored on a power play in the third on a delay of game but I liked our effort today and hopefully we can roll a couple.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On tonight’s game:

In the first period, a couple of penalties we can’t take, especially against a team like this which analytically is one of the best teams in the league. Really strong defensively for how little they give up, how much offence they can generate and how many pucks they get toward the net. To put ourselves down and have to burn through so much energy in our penalty killers, that was a tough way to start the game. The penalty kill did a good job through that. We were hoping to gain some momentum off of that but they just ultimately made it really hard for us to find our way out of our zone and set up in the offensive zone.

BOBBY McMANN

On penalties affecting the flow of the first period:
[Penalties] definitely disrupt the flow of the game but you can’t use that as an excuse. We weren’t ready to play and they jumped on us and we were trying to fight back the whole game.

On the uncharacteristic loss:

It definitely hurts because we’re not used to it. We don’t consider this acceptable. This is something that we’re going to internalize and be ready to go for our next one.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On Pavel Gogolev:
There’s been spurts in the game that he’s played where he’s showing a lot of skill. His ability and confidence with the puck to create offence. It was a pretty impressive goal he scored today. To come down the wing that fast with that kind of momentum and to go back short side. We’ve seen him do some things in practice after a few days when he started getting settled and comfortable, started to show himself and what he can do. Now we’re starting to see it every game a little bit more consistently.

On Joseph Woll:
He’s come a long ways since last year. He held us in this game. His ability to move laterally. He’s so explosive. He’s in such great shape. He’s starting to read plays more and anticipating them better and get to his spots and be set for those shots a little bit quicker. I can’t say enough about the type of person he is in his own right and his own leadership. Just very quiet, goes about his business. One of our hardest workers and guys really love playing for him.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On tonight’s game:
We were definitely happy with special teams. They stepped up in a big way, especially penalty kill. They killed some huge minutes tonight. Five-on-five wasn’t nearly where it needed to be. We didn’t manage the game well, we didn’t manage the score well, we didn’t manage the clock well. Immature turnovers at the bluelines. It’s interesting, the group knows what they need to be doing and they’re not executing yet in some of those items. We’re going to continue to have a sharp message and continue to hear from them until things are executed correctly 5-on-5.

On where the team needs to take the next step:
We’re pretty happy with the execution of our systems and the efforts there, guys are working. Some of it is just the decision-making right now throughout the game. There’s definitely areas in our system that we can work on and we will tomorrow. But for the most part right now, it’s just decision making around the rink.

On special teams:
We have guys who are willing to stick to the game plan for special teams. They’re executing at a high level, willingness to block shots and be in lanes. They’re working as a group of four out there. Rob’s done a good job of getting them organized and prepared for each game. It’s good to see guys that are willing to sacrifice and put in the effort in that area.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On Toronto’s D-zone coverage:
At times, it was really good. Our D have been focusing on stalls, closing out quicker, really not giving the opponent time in the D-zone to make plays. There were definitely moments where we strong in that area. I would say that there are still items that we’ve got to clean up. Just in terms of our organization of where our details are and within our system. It’s game four. We’re going to keep teaching, keep getting better. Overall if we’re looking back at these four games, the chances we’re limiting the opponent to right now is pretty strong, we have something to build off of but we know where we’re at right now.

On whether they generated enough quality scoring chances:
Enough is a good question. I would say we generated some offensive chances. Berdin really turned it on yesterday and today. We probably could have done a better job at getting to the net and getting to his eyes. He saw a lot of the shots. We created a lot off the entries. Even in the offensive zone, we got some movement going, we got shots from the interior but when we do take the shots, there’s not enough of a presence there to a goalie who’s really feeling it to make it challenging on him.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On whether game like tonight’s illustrates how difficult these four-game series are going to be to win:
It almost has a playoff environment feel to it which is good. It’s fun. Good way to challenge ourselves and give good reps for us to get better as a team, as a group. They played well tonight. Berdin had a great game and we’ll have to keep pushing, keep fighting to find wins.

On whether he was satisfied with the team’s persistence tonight:
Absolutely. Overall, we thought the team played well. Berdin stole the show today, seemed more controlled in his net. It was hard time getting things by him. We stayed with it. We were resilient. The group kept coming back and there was no feeling on the bench like the wind out of our sails was gone. I was proud of our team for that.

On the message to his team after tonight’s loss:
Just to stay with it. We got off to a really strong start in the first period. Our process was good the whole game. Again, a goalie kind of stole one. There were a lot of positives take from it. The group is in a good mindset. We didn’t feel like we beat ourselves tonight which is really good. We kept getting stronger and then we pushed back hard in the third so we’ll just get ready for tomorrow and start again.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On what he liked about his team’s effort tonight:
Our staff really liked that we built and got better as the game went on. Obviously for both teams and for everyone involved, it’s been a long time since we played a game, knocked off some of the rust in the first period but the group stayed really positive, stayed with the game plan and built on it from period to period and got stronger as we went on.

On getting a rounded opinion of his team after 60 minutes of play:
It’s definitely nice. To the players in some different spots and get them some reps that they haven’t seen in a while. Early on, I didn’t know if there was ever going to be a special teams or power play involved in the game but as the second half went on, some calls were made and it was good to get those reps and get those looks.

On forward Tyler Gaudet (2 goals, 1 assist):
I was really impressed with Tyler tonight. He’s put in a lot of preparation in the offseason. He’s come in this year with a lot of expectations for himself to contribute more offensively as he was disappointed with last year. It’s just really nice to see a person who comes to work every day, does things the right way. He’s put a process in for himself, has some goals for this season and to be rewarded tonight was nice to see.

On goaltender Andrew D’Agostini’s first AHL win:
The guys are really excited for him. His compete level is really high. Any team that see a goalie battling that hard in the net, they want to play hard for him. He did a great job, stayed within his game, made some key saves for us. The team is really happy for him and it was fun to watch him get his first win.
