POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On the back-to-back games:
[Yesterday] five-on-five in the first period it felt pretty even. The power play goal being the first goal maybe didn’t indicate how the five-on-five game was playing out. Today was kind of similar in the first period as it was a bit of a slow start for both teams. Towards the end of the first we had three maybe a fourth shift in a row where we finally had the ice tilted and got to our game, found our energy, found our legs, that carried over into the second and then throughout the rest of the game. The process today of building our momentum and finding it was better.

RICH CLUNE

On bouncing back from last night’s loss:

Yesterday we were very disappointed in ourselves as a collective team and the only way to get out of that is to get back to basics and work hard and pull off a team win like we did today. We’re happy with that. We got a tough schedule coming up this weekend, we’re going to have to do that a couple times. It was good to get back on the right foot.

BOBBY McMANN (2 GOALS)

On the success of the power play:

I think everybody keeping it simple and knowing their job and doing their job really well. Everybody’s not caring who’s scoring the goals or who’s getting the points or whatever, we just want to put the puck in the back of the net and make a difference in the game. I think that’s translated into a lot of success for us.

POSTGAME QUOTES

ASSISTANT COACH A.J. MacLEAN

On tonight’s game:
We just got a little bit distracted. Distracted in our game plan, distracted in what we came to do. … They stuck to their plan I would imagine. In watching them, they’re a very hard working, competitive team. They get to the net, they shoot it, they attack. It just looked like they stuck with their plan and it got away from us for a short amount of time and that in turn was the game.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On today’s win:
It feels good. The few times we’ve played these guys, our team has really stepped up for the challenge and we got back to some of the recipe we found yesterday. Stay out of the penalty box and we gave ourselves a chance to win the longer we played five-on-five.

On Keith Petruzzelli’s play:
It was great. He battled. [The] toe save he made on that rebound was a big one for us. He was positioned, he was calm and comfortable. He gave our team confidence to be calm and comfortable in front of him.

On Bobby McMann’s progression through the season:
He’s done a really good job. He works really hard. His puck play has really, really improved. His awareness of what’s around him. He has a great shot and I think he relied on that early on… He’s constructing some good sequences in between some of the plays with his line mates, so he’s really improved in that area.

KEITH PETRUZZELLI

On Alex Biega and the team’s defensive play:
It was great tonight. The boys made my job easy. Keeping stuff to the outside, blocking huge shots. Biega takes a stick to the face on the penalty kill and just keeps going, keeps working. It’s guys like that that just lead the way and it’s good to see.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On what needs to change for tomorrow’s game:
Stay out of the penalty box against a top power play unit. I mean for the most part we played some good hockey. I thought the first period was a good start for us going toe-to-toe with them. Second period, penalties and turnovers through the middle of the rink kind of fueled their momentum and gave them some space to make plays and go back towards our net. We got back to it in the third period, came out hard, got back to our game plan. So, it’s just those little blips, those little five, 10, 15-minute segments that we just got to stay on it and execute what we want to execute.

ALEX STEEVES (2 ASSISTS)

On today’s game:

We had a good start. They’re a really good team. Not really a good idea to put them on the power play, we gave them a lot of opportunities there. I thought it was a good hard battle. It felt like a playoff game and they came out on top. I think we just kind of stick to our recipe and play the right way I think we’ll have a really good chance to get them back tomorrow.

On Michael Hutchinson’s play:

Hutchy was a stud tonight. He gave us a chance to pull our goalie at the end there. That one save he made was one of the better saves I’ve seen all year. He’s a gamer and he really balled out for us tonight and gave us a chance to win and which is all you can really ask from your goalie.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On the taking today’s win into the weekend:
Just recognizing the feeling that we had playing as a team and what our process was. They came out really hard to start the game. It took a little bit for us to get our momentum going. We had a few days there without games but our team did a really good job of sticking to the process, finding our way through it. [And in] that second period all the things we’ve talked about building momentum and taking it from there.

On St. Patrick’s Day game:
Great crowd. Our team really were lifted by the noise and the support that our fanbase gave us. On a special day like today with all the uniforms. [Equipment staff] Wil Burns and Steph Klein are unbelievable. They put in the most hours of anybody. They are two of the hardest workers we have in the organization and the amount of detail and effort that they put into making this day special for the players and staff was really, really impressive.

On Joseph Woll leaving the game due to injury:

Shoulder. He’ll get more evaluation done today. Unknown right now on prognosis.

On Michael Hutchinson entering the game:
Always challenging for a goalie to come in unexpectedly like that. Last game, he played great. Today in an even tougher spot, he came in and made some big saves for us and kept things settled, giving us a chance to win this game.

JOSPEH BLANDISI (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On today’s game:
We had a tough stretch there a little bit so, it really brought the guys together, found ways to win and these last two wins have been character as you see the games start to get closer to playoffs and the hockey is looking like that. These tight games are big ones for us to win and are definitely big down the stretch for point wise.

On Michael Hutchinson:

It’s a veteran goaltender. He’s a rock back there. Even if he’s not playing, he’s good for us in practice, he’s good for us as a leadership role guy and he helps talk to the young goalies too. Part of their success has to do with them and the way he mentors them. You see it with Källy who’s up top now, Joe Woll’s playing amazing and Hutchy’s able to save their bacon whenever they need him. It’s just a great trio that we have of goaltenders and we’re excited to use them all down the stretch.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On tonight’s game:

The whole effort, everything that the team brought today was impressive. Really proud of the group. These last three games we’ve put together, last game we didn’t get the result we wanted but they extended the way they played today. It was just a gutsy effort. It was fun to watch them dig one out.

On Michael Hutchinson:
That’s a tough spot for a goalie to be out that many games, he comes in and plays phenomenal. Made some huge saves for us, gave us a chance to win the game here in a tough building.

JOEY ANDERSON (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On rebounding from last night’s loss:

It was great. I thought last night we put forth a really great effort, didn’t get the result we wanted but we kept that going tonight. Guys were all pulling on the rope together and it was just a really good 60 minutes and a little more than that tonight. We had every guy pulling on the rope tonight and doing the little things we needed to do to win and Hutchy steps in after not playing for a while and was awesome for us and it was great to see that. It was a really good night for the guys to get this win.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On tonight’s game:

Today was a good response for our group in how we played, what our objective was in the game. There was a real consistent effort in the game today from everybody. Joe Woll was great in net today, made some huge saves early, let us find our legs and get into this game. Really tough building to play in and obviously a top opponent in the league. We managed things a lot better. I liked our process today.

On playing with a depleted lineup:

We feel on any given night we can beat whoever we’re playing, if we’re playing the right way. Today was one of those nights that we didn’t get the results we wanted but really proud of the team in how we competed and how we found our way through a really challenging game in a tough barn.

On Joseph Woll:

He looked really confident today, made a lot of saves look easy. One of his strengths is his athleticism and he had to reach for a few to bail us out.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On today’s game:

When we’re playing on our toes and we’re playing with pace and all five guys on the ice are playing with a purpose and a plan, we’re typically not taking penalties. When we’re reaching, when we’re falling behind, our structure is not in place, it puts us in tough spots. I mean you can always argue the bounces, when refs may be calling things that you don’t think are penalties and it goes back and forth for all teams throughout the whole season. We’re hitting a rough patch here, but we just got to stay off the refs, we’ve got to take care of ourselves, take ownership of our play and make sure we stay out of the box.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On today’s game:

We expect more from ourselves, that we can beat any team on any given night. The result is frustrating. It was a back-and-forth game. It’s starting to feel like the end of the season where points are on the line, playoff positions are on the line. Playoff hockey is starting to come and you could tell this was one of those games where every play was a big play.

On Alex Steeves not returning to the game:
We kept him off for precautionary reasons. No real diagnosis right now.

On Joseph Woll:

He looked really solid. He stabilized things back there for us at times. Really good game for him.

ALEX BIEGA

On today’s game:

It was a tight game. It’s just how the Bruins play and they play. They play a north-south game for the most part. They played a steady game where they didn’t give too much up. I thought it was a close game. There were a couple of errors we made at the end. You can call it fatigue, you can call it just mental errors but at the same time in tight checking games like that, we just have to understand as we continue to creep down into the playoffs that we have tighten things up defensively and I think that was relevant obviously in the third period.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On starting Toronto’s fourth line:

The last couple of games they have been our best line. Clune, Douglas and Kopacka, who’s been on and off that line, but for the most part the three of them have consistently competed hard and done things the way that we have asked of the group in the last couple of games, so we gave them that rope today.

On the power play:
Those were timely goals in the game. Special teams are really important and they stepped up in a big way today to either build momentum when needed or keep pulling away when we needed to.

On the successful four-minute penalty kill in the third period:

Again, timely. Four minutes in the third period when a team could gain momentum back on us. I thought our forecheck did a really good job of denying them entries at the blue line and then we were able to get some timely clears when they set up in the d-zone.

On Curtis Douglas (1 goal, 3 assists):

He’s been impressive. From day one, he’s grown a lot in terms of how he’s playing and how he’s adapting to this level, this league. A true testament to a good athlete is how quickly they can add and apply things that’s given to him and he’s done that ten-fold this year and part of our success lately as a team is with the points that he’s giving but is his competitiveness, his penalty killing, his face off responsibility. There’s a lot of things he’s doing really well.

CURTIS DOUGLAS (1 GOAL, 3 ASSISTS)

On today’s win:
It speaks to the character of the group. It’s not easy for a 7:00 p.m. game and then a noon start the next morning. I think everyone came in a little a tired but we found a way and everyone was in it and everyone was vocal. I think it really helps in a game like that to be able to move your feet and really helps when you have your teammates rooting for you. We definitely had that today and it showed.

On his four-point performance:
Those don’t happen often. You just have to take it. I don’t really know what to say. I don’t want to say luck but it sort of felt like everything that I touched was getting a bounce and it was nice. I don’t think I’ve had a ton of recently. It was nice to get a couple of bounces today.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On trends in the team’s recent losses:

I would say it’s even longer then that in terms of inconsistent play. It appears to be fighting some positive energy, momentum. We’ve got to find a way to turn things around and find some of the pushback and the game play that we found about a month ago.

On Joseph Woll’s performance:
He played really well for us. We needed to be way better in front of him. We were pretty fortunate for the score to be what it was going into the third period. We’ve got to value more of how we defend in front of our goalies. They’ve been playing well all year and there’s still too much work for them.

JOSEPH DUSZAK

On the team’s recent play:
In February, we were sticking up for each other. Even in the last couple of games, we were sticking up for each other, being hard to play against. I feel teams now are just coming in and they see the Marlies on the schedule and they know it’s going to be an easy game because we’re just not working, we’re not competing. We just don’t have that mentality that we’re going to go out and kind of the (screw) you mentality and we just don’t have it.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On today’s game:

Definitely not the result that we wanted. On any given night, it is a really tough league. It’s a tough division that we’re playing in so, credit to them for a big push after yesterday’s game. I thought we came out pretty good in the first period. I know we didn’t get the first one but our energy was in a good place, we were generating some chances.

On the message to the team following physical moments:
Just to keep sticking together, keep fighting through the adversity. It’s more about staying positive with them and trying to calm the tension. You want them to get emotional and get into the game but also find their confidence and their puck play and structure and not let the moments of the game derail everything about what we’re trying to do.
