POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On managing emotions in the third period

There was definitely a response from our group after the hit on Ho-Sang in a positive way. The emotional charge where you don’t want to see one of your own members of your group go down like that. Just the pure will and determination to have a response, to find some offence, to find a way to win the game for Ho-Sang was really good to see from the group.

On Joey Anderson and Brett Seney:
Their energy and their take-charge mentality of the direction they want the game to go in, to push and drive the team to go in a certain way. They led by example on the ice. With the goal that Anderson had and Seney coming up big with a puck to the net that went off Chyzowski, they added a lot to our game today. Can’t say enough about the way they conduct themselves and how they lead this group.

JOEY ANDERSON (2nd CAREER HAT TRICK)

On coming back to the Marlies:

It’s great. I was excited to see all the guys today. It was a fun game. We battled some adversity and it was one of those games where we’re going to come together as a group from it. It was good to be around all of the guys.

On Toronto’s response in the third period:
A bad hit we thought on (Ho-Sang), no call and then they come back and score right away. Guys were frustrated. We did it clean though. Guys weren’t taking dumb penalties after that. We just kept trying to piece away at it. We found a goal in regulation and got it to overtime and were able to capitalize on the power play to finish the deal.

BRETT SENEY (1 GOAL, 3 ASSISTS)

On Toronto’s response in the third period:
Obviously what happened with Josh (Ho-Sang), we didn’t appreciate. We thought it was a play that could have been a call. We decided the best way to get back at them was to put the puck in the net and get back in the game. Obviously, it wasn’t the response we originally wanted with them scoring but I thought our group dug deep up and down the lineup to get into overtime there and then finish the job.

On Joey Anderson:

I love playing with the guy. He’s one of my good buddies off the ice. I can’t say enough good things about him. It’s always great to see him get rewarded.

On the overtime winner on the power play:

We’ve got to give a lot of credit to our PP coach, Snacks (AJ MacLean), who drew up a play for us and Steeves and Duszak executed there at the top and Joe’s there to put in the garbage.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On the team’s first period:

This is an extremely hard building to play in. Notorious for coming out with strong starts. They have a good crowd. We didn’t come out with the start that we have recently in the last few games. On top of them coming out strong and us being flat, we may it hard on ourselves. The guys were saying the right things in the first intermission and responded in the second.

On Joseph Woll leaving the game in the second period:
I think one of our defenceman accidentally collided into him into the side of his leg. He may have tweaked his knee a little bit. Well assess and have our doctors look at it and see what comes of it. It was a heck of a job for him up until that point. Really kept us in the game with how many shots there were and then for how hard it is for Källgren to come in cold off the bench and play the way he did and give us a chance to win the game is great.

ALEX STEEVES (2 GOALS)

On tonight’s game:
We felt coming out of the first period only down one was kind of a moral victory for us. I don’t think it was our best period. We had a really good talk in the locker room that started with the players and I think that helped us gather some steam and have a better second period, score a power play goal which was huge and then the overtime goal is good to pick up the extra point in a tough barn.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On Toronto’s special teams:

Penalty kill has been great this year, (John Snowden) has done a great job with that area of our game and power play was strong today. Special teams did a really great job on both sides of it to give us a chance to win this game along with Källgren and playing really well around our net. Within this league and how hard it is to win, you definitely need to lean on your special teams to execute and we got that today.

On progress through the second half of the season:
Especially since this break, I think anybody coming off a break that they have been sitting so long, it took some time to get going, but we’re in that part of the season where the guys have started to figure out what works and what doesn’t work. They’re all starting to say the right things, leadership has done a great job of pushing the message of what’s needed from day to day, whether it’s in practice or in games. It’s a good sign when a group like this at this time of the year is starting to mature as quickly as they are. This isn’t leaking to the halfway point or further. We have high expectations that we keep growing and keep trending the way we are.

MAC HOLLOWELL (2 ASSISTS)

On today’s game:

A big focus in the second half of the season has just been our starts and trying to play more of a full 60 minutes right from the get-go and I think our start tonight was really good. Obviously, power play was clicking for us so that was huge but I just think overall our energy and commitment to just playing a team game, playing defensively is really good to see.

ANTTI SUOMELA (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On Erik Källgren:

He’s a great goalie. He gives us a chance to win every game and every day and that’s huge for us. It’s the same thing with Joseph Woll. We have really good goalies and we can trust them. I think we can still defend better so they don’t have to face 50 shots a game, but the goalies are huge for us.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On how the Marlies have been putting together consecutive quick starts:

A lot of discussion. Leadership too has done a great job of talking with the group and just giving insights of how important it is in this league, how hard it is to win games if we don’t give ourselves a chance from the start, it makes it really challenging to come back and find your way back into it. It was a good start, good process. The guys were diligent about the game plan and how to score against these guys and went out and executed.

ALEX STEEVES (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On the first period:
It was definitely something we talked about in the locker room before the game started that we really wanted to start fast and get on them. Obviously, that happened. It was one of those first periods that everything was kind of just going right for us. I think we were earning it. We got some really good plays, I think my line got pretty hot there and it’s good that our power play stepped up and got us a goal which is always really important to win the special teams battle, so it was just a really good first period.

On playing with the lead:
It’s always important to reflect on how games transpire. Personally, at this point of the year I think we got to get over that hump. We’ve had some stretches, we’ve had leads this year so I think we’re kind of over the fact where we have to understand how to finish the game, we just got to do it. It was a good game for us to get the win, unbelievable first period, probably our best first period of the year in terms of production but at the same time, I think at some point we just got to step and be a little more assertive to finish games.

JOSEPH WOLL (37 SAVES)

On playing with the lead:

Honestly, I try to treat it exactly the same as if we were tied or down. I think that’s the best mindset I could have is to always try to play the same way regardless of the situation but seeing us come out like that and play like that in the first is pretty cool to watch. We have been talking a lot about our starts and you couldn’t really have a better start then that so it’s pretty nice.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On today’s start:

It was a good start. We’ve mentioned it almost every time that last few games how important it is to get off to a strong start and not feel like you’re playing from behind. We’ve been changing up our routine on how we’ve been preparing whether it’s our staff, our players, mixing it up to get a new feel. It seems to be working so far and hopefully something we can build on.

On the line of Mikhail Abramov, Brett Seney and Joey Anderson:
(Anderson and Seney) have played really well together before. Today obviously to see them all have success on the scoresheet is really good to see. As the year builds and you start putting lines back together that been better before, they’ll usually start building more chemistry the more time they have with one another. They’re the type of guys that when they’re on the bench they’re talking to each other a lot about a lot of details, ironing things out in different zones.

On the team’s performance:
We feel that we have gotten better with every game since the break. We’re building in the right direction. Today was probably one of our most complete games in terms of effort, energy for 60 minutes, execution of the game plan that we set out against the opponent that we’re playing. It’s good. This is the time of year that we need to start seeing that consistency and today we saw that.

MATT HELLICKSON (1 GOAL, 2 ASSISTS)

On his first professional goal:
It was awesome. It felt great to finally get the monkey off the back. I jumped on the ice and the puck was in the O-zone. I think it was Abramov who had it out of the corner and passed it up to Chad (Krys) and I’m a leftie so I was calling for it and thankfully Chad heard me and got the puck, took a look up at the net and saw some space and just tried to put it there and thankfully, it went in.

MAC HOLLOWELL (1 ASSIST)

On today’s game:
We definitely got the start that we wanted to get again which is huge for our team moving forward. As the game went on, we had a lead there and we got just trying to defend it more than play which is what got us to the lead. We had to keep our foot on the gas pedal and keep moving forward.

On Utica’s play:

They come hard and they don’t stop. They’ve got a lot of skill on each line, all four lines forecheck, crash and bang in on our D. That was the biggest thing just getting back and getting first touch and getting pucks in our forwards’ hands.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On Ryan Chyzowski’s performance:

Really happy for him. He’s one of those guys with an infectious personality. He’s always rooting and cheering on everyone regardless of his ice time or his opportunity. He’s the definition of a team player. So, it’s good to get him on the ice, get him some opportunities and he found some success early.

On Joseph Blandisi:

It’s been such a short window for us and our time with him, just his second game but you can tell the maturity he has and how he plays and how he manages situations. He’s a competitor, and you can tell he’s been a great addition.

JOSEPH BLANDISI (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On the locker room:
Everybody is really close in the dressing room. I know it’s a family type of atmosphere in there. The coaches are hanging out with the players and you can barely decipher who’s who because everybody gets a long really well. The training staff and everybody is looking out for us. I just think with the family atmosphere, everybody wants to go to battle for each other and that’s a good recipe for success.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On tonight’s game:

In the first period, it felt like we got off to a much better start even then we did in the last game against them. We had a hard time getting to their net but I felt that for the most part, we were possessing the puck and controlling the game and things were in our favour. We definitely needed to find another level to find opportunities at the net and around the net. It was tight all the way down through and it was really good to see Abramov get a goal there. He’s a player who’s just been working so hard since the beginning of the year. He’s developed so much and added a lot to his game and rounding it out. In terms of the guys who hadn’t scored yet in this league, he had something like the highest expected goals for. He’s just been unlucky at times. It was good to see him finally get one. He deserves it.

On Erik Källgren’s performance:

It was great. He’s bailed us out of a lot of situations in this one contest, let alone past games. He should feel good about the work that he’s put in and not worry about (this game).

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On tonight’s game:
First, Joe Woll played phenomenal for us and gave us an opportunity to win this game. Heavily outshot in the first two periods and he shut the door. He looked very composed, in control the whole time. His ability to recover the pucks in and around the crease. In the third, we would found our game, we found our compete, our passion, our spirit for playing and doing the things that brought us success in wins prior to this Christmas break. The first period, there was compete there. I thought before the first TV timeout, it was good intention with how we were playing but then we started getting sloppy with our puck management, turning pucks over, made us spend a lot more time in our D zone. Their power play gave them a lot more momentum for them which kind of us put on our heels. Once we got through the second period and into the third, we finally found it and we found a way to find the back of the net. Good job by our guys to find a way.

FILIP KRÀL (2 ASSISTS)

On the challenge of returning after a long break:
It’s always challenging but we had a couple of good practices to get ready for the game. The first period was kind of hard to get used to it but after that, everyone was used to it and it was fine.

On the team’s third period:
We talked in the dressing room and talked through the first two periods and we didn’t play good. We knew we needed to be better. We just played our game in the last period.

On tonight’s game:

The first two periods, I don’t think we deserved to win but the third one was pretty good from us. We played good in the third. Obviously, it’s a good win for us to finish 2021 and be better in 2022.

    POSTGAME QUOTES
    HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
    On tonight’s game:
I thought the chances were still pretty even for the most part throughout the game. The game could have gone either way.
In the D zone we just needed a couple more blocks and shot lanes and boxing out the net front, but given the
circumstances of the day and the guys kind of being thrown in the blender for the most part with the lineup and the lines, I
thought everyone did an excellent job of finding their way today.
    On tonight’s lineup:
Obviously a very different lineup. A lot of different lines put together. As the first period went along, we started to do a lot
of good things. With the shot totals at the end of the first you could tell that we found our legs and found some rhythm
within ourselves and got some opportunities towards the net in the first.
    BOBBY McMANN (1 GOAL)
    On tonight’s game:
It was a bit of a tough start for us. That’s something that we’re working on and we’ve been battling with that this year. We
just felt like we were behind the eight-ball from the get-go there and if we would have had a better start, I think we would
have had a different outcome that’s for sure because I just felt like we were skating behind it and chasing it a little bit off
the start and that’s not a way you want to start the game.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On tonight’s game:

First weekend back for Suomela and I thought as tough as it was to not play a game in seven months to then play three-in-three, he did a really good job getting us some really strong minutes, played really well today. We’ve leaned on a lot of guys to come in and fill in some spot. After the slow start in the first, we found our game, thought we deserved a little bit better outcome in the second and third in terms of finding some goals.
