    POSTGAME QUOTES:
    HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE
    On tonight’s game:

“Yeah I thought we obviously did have a very good start to the game. We’ve had a lot of really good starts to games here of late. Obviously, it’s been the finish that hasn’t gone well or the second half of games hasn’t gone well. Tonight maybe a fast start ended up working against us, I don’t know because I just
thought we just played the game as though it was going to be really easy the rest of the way and paid for it.”
On his concern regarding developing patterns over the past few weeks:
“In the previous games, I thought it was different. Today I just thought we played soft and we made poor decisions defensively and we couldn’t sort anything out. I just thought it was far different. Each game has been different so it’s hard to talk about patterns other than the obvious in that we’ve been giving up leads but I just thought we got exposed today for being a team that was soft and purposeless and just playing the game and just hoping it was going to work out but we were missing important people tonight, on defence in particular so our team game had to be very solid and purposeful and try to make life easier for our defenceman and our goaltender and we didn’t do that nearly enough. Because of our good start we were in a position to get at least a point out of this game here tonight. We get two breakaways in the third
period and if we score on either of those (John Tavares) has a really good look on a pass from below the goal-line, if those go in then in changes the result of the game but it doesn’t change how we play and how we played was not nearly good enough. I didn’t think we had anybody that played well tonight, coaches
didn’t coach well tonight, so today is a much different game than we’ve played in the others where we’ve given up leads and such. I just didn’t think we had nearly enough urgency or purpose.”
    MITCH MARNER
    On tonight’s game:

“I think our first was good. We were moving the puck, we were moving our feet, we weren’t being too pretty with it. I think in the second we took our foot off the gas and it’s becoming too much and it’s becoming something that we really need to stop doing and fix because this wasn’t something that we
were doing at the start of the year and even before this whole break and everything kind of happened. Second periods we just have to make sure we are dialed in. We get these leads and then go into the second and think it’s just going to be an easy 40 minutes and everything is coming to bite us in the butt
and we just have to make sure that we don’t lose the game plan that we come in with that makes us successful, that’s something that is kind of slipping on us right now and we have to make sure that we dial it back in and I’m sure we will dial that in.”
On which circumstances have contributed to the team’s lapses during games:
“I don’t know, it’s hard to kind of pinpoint that but it probably doesn’t help much really taking all that time off and playing in front of no fans. It’s just something that’s hard to pinpoint at the moment but like I said
at the start of the year, even before the break, we were a team that never gave up and never stopped. I don’t think that we are doing but it’s something that I think we are getting away from is just playing the same way that we are in the first 20 and trying to start playing all this pretty game and trying to make too many plays and trying to take it back every time and setting things up and going up the ice. I think we just have to stick to our game plan of going quick up if we have the opportunity, getting pucks in and keeping away from their goalie and making sure our forecheck is on point. I think that’s something also got away from us tonight a little bit and when we’re forechecking well we’re getting pucks back and we’re making it
    hard on other teams.”
    RASMUS SANDIN
    On tonight’s game:

“The game overall, we had a pretty good first period. I think we were moving the puck decently well. We came out of the period with a lead and we didn’t have a good second or third period, that’s happened a lot over the last couple games here and that’s something we need to clean up for sure. For me too, I think I
was on for three goals that we let in so that’s obviously not good. I need to watch the game afterwards and clean some stuff up obviously, as every game, so I’m looking forward to the next one and try to look at things that I can clean up and move forward from it so just looking forward to next game.”
On taking on a greater role in Jake Muzzin’s absence:
“Well first off we miss (Muzzin) out there for sure. He’s a huge part of our team so we miss him for sure but at the same time, that’s when other guys need to step up and do stuff that maybe can fill in for missing a key player on our team but I’m looking forward to it for sure. I think me and (Timothy Liljegren)
we know what we can do out there. Even if I play with him or with Dermott or anyone, we know what we are capable of doing. As I said, we’re just going to clean some stuff up from today and move forward from it and looking forward to next game.”
    MICHAEL BUNTING
    On tonight’s game:

“I thought we were bringing our game early, we had a really good first period. We responded after their first goal pretty quick and got that two-goal lead back and then we just let them back in the game in the
second and we didn’t bring it in the third. We have to bring a little bit more urgency. We’re a good team and we can’t be letting other teams come back into games like that. We believe in one another and we believe in our ability and we just kind of have to move on from this game.”
On what Mitch Marner brings off the ice:
“Yeah, Mitch is the kind of guy that is talking all the time. He’s always in the mix with everybody and he definitely brings a lot of energy into the locker room every single day. He’s a fun guy to be around off the
ice and he’s a fun guy to play with on the ice. Exactly what he brings on the ice is exactly is pretty much the energy he brings off the ice.”
    JACK CAMPBELL
    On tonight’s game:

    “Just not good enough.”
On what Mitch Marner brings off the ice:

“He’s such a special part of our team. The way he plays out there, he’s buzzing around and creating so many chances and doing such a great job in the d-zone. He’s the same way off the ice where he’s getting all his teammates involved and he loves his teammates, loves asking how your day is going. He’s a special person and a special leader for our group and he means the world to us.”

    POSTGAME QUOTES:
    HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE

On the emotions of tonight’s game:
“A little bit crazy. You know, it’s just in the way it works out – a game like this – which kind of sums up the way the road trip went for us but obviously thrilled the way it worked out. Each time, when we needed to push back and respond, we did. Whether it was after the first goal of the game, whether it was after giving up the lead and getting it back, or in the third period there having to get a key goal on the power play and then grinding it out in the end, it was good to see for our guys. This is an important win for us going home.”
    On Liljegren’s first NHL goal:
“It’s huge and we’re happy for him. It’s interesting you say I’ve been with him so long. I’ve been with him so long that I had to be reminded that it was his first goal. It feels like he’s been here a while and I’ve certainly seen him score but I guess that was just as the AHL level. I wasn’t really aware that it was his
first one, but it certainly was a great one and we’re thrilled for him. I thought he played a great game today. He moved the puck really well, helped us on the breakout, got us out of trouble sometimes and, at times, got himself into trouble but then bailed himself out. It was great for him and huge to see him get
    rewarded.”
On Marner’s return to the lineup:
“I thought he was great tonight. For a guy who hasn’t played in a while and just had the one team practice
on this trip, he had good legs. Whether it was his goal or the big-time pass he makes on Matthews’ power
play goal to tie the game. That’s what Mitch does. He’s a game-breaker like that. It was certainly nice to
have him back in the mix here tonight.”
    AUSTON MATTHEWS
    On tonight’s game:

“Tough one and fun. I think you kind of hit it right on the head, just back-and-forth and up-and-down a bit of rollercoaster but we found a way to win and we’re going home with two points which is all that matters.”
On Marner’s return to the lineup:

“Well anytime he’s in the lineup he’s going to give you a lot of looks. He’s a world class player and he just
finds a way out there. He makes plays, he’s sees the ice really well and he’s extremely dynamic so we’re a better hockey team when he’s playing so we’re happy to have him back.”
    MITCH MARNER
On his return to the lineup after missing the last three games:

“Coming in yesterday, it was just great being back with the guys. Especially with the injury and then the COVID situation, I didn’t really get to see the guys for two months or something like that so just being back with the guys brings me a lot of energy and a lot of joy. Obviously tonight, I just wanted to come in
and keep it simple. If I had plays to be made, then try them, but obviously it feels nice to come back and contribute and help this team win.”
    On tonight’s win:
“It was crazy. A rollercoaster ride. Obviously, that’s not the kind of game we want to play but I think we did a great job of staying with it, making sure we’re doing the right things no matter if we gave up the lead, they took it or anything like that, we just kept fighting back. Obviously, our power play wasn’t doing what we needed it to do tonight but that’s a big goal when we needed it. It’s a gritty win. We wanted to finish the trip off right and I think we’re all happy with how we finished this game.”
    TIMOTHY LILJEGREN
    On his first NHL goal:

“I think we moved the puck well there in the o-zone and [Dermott] got the puck and I was open, got the pass and just thought I’d give it a go. I actually didn’t see the puck go in myself so I was kind of hesitant to
celebrate there at first but it was nice.”
On assessing his game with increased ice time tonight:
“I don’t know. I felt kind of good out there. Obviously, I was on the ice for three goals in our net so the play in front of our net was not good enough today, especially from my side. I think all of the goals they scored
when I was in was in front of the net so just not good enough. Other than that, I thought it was better than last game for my part.”
    ILYA MIKHEYEV
    On his improvement this season:

“Just trying to help the team be better because we want to have progress ever game and step-by-step I just feel more confident now.”

    POSTGAME QUOTES:
    HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE
    On tonight’s game:

“Our power play wasn’t very good tonight. Had a chance to grab ahold of the game for us and failed to do so. Our execution offensively wasn’t really good enough either. Clearly didn’t make good on our chances, we generated more than enough to score far more than we did. But we didn’t execute and didn’t find ways to make it harder on their goaltender once he got in a groove.”
    JOHN TAVARES
On tonight’s game and facing a strong goaltender:

“Obviously I think we just have to find a way to capitalize on our chances and just make it a little bit more difficult around him and around the net but certainly we had our looks and our opportunities. Just one of
those nights where you have to find a way to break through and unfortunately, we didn’t. We have to do a better job here of winning some third periods.”
On his line during tonight’s game:
“Yeah I think certainly much better tonight. I think we generated more. Much more connected. Better things to build off of and it’s a long season so try not to get hung up too much on a night where it doesn’t
go so well and we still got a really good result at the end of the day so it was a good team effort with everyone contributing but certainly we want to be at a high level and be counted on and be consistent. So better today and still want to be a lot better and find ways to be more productive than we were.”
    AUSTON MATTHEWS
On the team having a strong offensive game but facing a strong goaltender:
“I think you just kind of stick to it and continue to fight, continue to push, continue to force that pressure and eventually break them. Obviously with the amount of shots and chances we had tonight sometimes you have to tip your hat. I thought we really controlled the play for the most part of the game, especially that second period. Sometimes you just run into a hot goalie and you have to tip your hat to him.”
On if his goal tonight was meaningful to him, in setting a Maple Leafs franchise record for consecutive road games with a goal (9):
“Yeah, I suppose. Like you said I would have obviously rather taken the win tonight but have to give credit to the guys out there with me on my line making plays and stuff. Obviously still leaving the rink a little bit sour in not getting those two points.”
    PETR MRÁZEK
On drawing back into the lineup:

“Yeah, I felt pretty good out there. I think early on I didn’t have many shots but I think I managed it pretty well.”
    On facing a strong goaltender:
“That’s how it is sometimes, that’s how it is. You just have to stay focused and track the puck when they’re in our zone.”
    TIMOTHY LILJEGREN
On drawing back into the lineup:

“Yeah, it was fun. I think the first period I tried to get my legs back and made a couple mistakes I think but as the game went on, I think I played solid. Not my best game by any means but I think it was okay.”
On having a strong offensive game but facing a strong goaltender:
“Yeah, we just tried to talk about staying patient and sticking with it and eventually one will go in and obviously (Matthews) got one there early in the third just their goalie had an unbelievable night and it just
    wasn’t our night.”

anything going. We really allowed their game to take hold. That was the type of game we thought it would be. They’re that type of team. We make a mistake on an entry, have no structure coming back up ice and make it easy on them to get through the neutral zone which we really hadn’t done through the whole first
period. Then they got their o-zone game going from there. That made it a tougher second period for us. We were able to get two goals which was obviously huge for us. We had an opportunity in the third period to make good on what we failed to do the other night [in Colorado] and we failed to do that again here today. I think the third period is a lot different than it was the
other night. I didn’t think we gave up very much in the third period. In fact, at five-on-five I think we gave up two scoring chances in the third period. One is the goal early in the third. Obviously, we make an unacceptable and rare mistake on the penalty kill, take the too many men that puts us down five-on-three. That’s the difference there. We go from missing a shorthanded breakaway and breaking the game into a two-goal lead again, instead we’re killing five-on-three and the game is tied. Disappointed with that. To
look at it here, we’ve played two very elite teams here in the west and got three out of four points, so we feel good about that but if we want to be a serious hockey team we need to be better in third periods and
find ways to control the game.”
    WILLIAM NYLANDER
    On tonight’s game:

“I think our line, we weren’t good tonight. We struggled. They had heavy o-zone pressure on us, made a couple sloppy plays. We were able to get the win which was big but we have to bear down in those areas.”
    On the shootout:
“Yeah they’re great. You have a lot of space so it’s fun being out there on the three-on-three and then the
shootout you just try and score and get the W.”
    AUSTON MATTHEWS
On the chemistry he has developed with Michael Bunting:

“It’s been great, honestly. I think ever since training camp we’ve got to know each other pretty well and have got pretty close so I think ever since we’ve started playing together it’s been a lot of fun. We just try
to feed off each other and get better and better every day and just read off each other no matter who we’re playing with. It’s been a lot of fun playing with him. He works hard. He’s easy to play with. He goes into those dirty areas and he fishes out pucks and he makes plays. Just an easy guy to play with.”
On if he wants to raise his game for Bunting’s return to Arizona tomorrow night:
“Absolutely. We’re expecting big things. He’s been talking about this game for a long time and there should be a pretty big video tribute for him and all that stuff. I think he’s excited. I know I’m excited to go back home and play in front of friends and family. We’ve got a team that’s waiting for us back there so I
think we’ll be ready to go.”
    MICHAEL BUNTING
On his chemistry with Auston Matthews:

“Obviously playing with him has been a great opportunity for myself. I’ve said this before, but he and I hang out quite a bit off the ice so we’ve built that chemistry off the ice and we bring it on the ice. Just playing with him is a lot of fun and I try to get open and dig pucks for him and make plays because
obviously he’s one of the best players in the world. Every single night he’s bringing his game so I know I’ve got to bring mine.”
    On returning to Arizona tomorrow:
“I’m really excited to go back. Obviously, they’re the team that drafted me and pretty much started my pro career. I spent a long time in that organization, mostly in the minors with the Tucson Roadrunners, so I’m sure there’s going to be some fans from Tucson coming to support. I saw a couple here tonight, actually, so that was pretty cool. Just playing in front of the Coyotes fans will be a lot of fun as well. They treated me great, that organization, and I had a blast while I was playing there. I’ve been looking forward to this
since the season has started and I know [Matthews] has as well, obviously growing up in Arizona. Obviously, it’s a special game for him as well.”
    JACK CAMPBELL
    On his recent play:

“Yeah, I’m just having a blast in there playing with the group we have and another hard-fought battle tonight. It’s nice to finish the job and get the two points.”
On the goaltender tandem between himself and Petr Mrázek:
“Yeah, I’m just excited for Petr to get in there and do his thing. Whenever coach taps one of us on the shoulder and tells us it’s our time, we’ll be ready. I’m just excited to keep working on my game and the partnership Petr and I have

    POSTGAME QUOTES:
    HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE
On what could have been done to secure tonight’s early lead:

“Hard to say. I’m going to watch it back. There aren’t many teams in the league that could keep these guys below four these days. I think it’s tough, it’s tough to do that, especially with a short bench today and missing three very important forwards. Three guys that will be vital for us in protecting a lead like that and
allowing us to use more of our bench. Three penalty killers as well. We had to kill four penalties today and we had one power play. Penalty kill did an outstanding job, but I take nothing but positive out of this game
tonight. I know the way you give up the lead in the third and you end up losing in overtime… We tie the game here today, it’s a huge point for us, and all things considered, this team we’re playing tonight is
rolling. It’s a tough building to play in. It’s probably the loudest building we’ve played in all year, so you come out of playing in front of no fans and then you’re into this. The response from our group to start the
game I thought was outstanding, even though it took us a little bit to get our offence moving I just thought our guys worked, our structure was really good and even though the shot volume goes up throughout the
game, I just don’t think we gave up much in terms of dangerous scoring chances when we did, Soupy was unbelievable with some of the saves he made. I thought our guys did what we asked of them today, would we liked to get two points? Absolutely. Should we have had two points? Absolutely, but that’s a
very good team and to come out here on the road and get a point is huge for our group.”
    JACK CAMPBELL
    On tonight’s game:

“It was a good game. Crowd was really loud, it was fun out there and I thought our guys competed really hard. If I play up to my standard, we win that game every time.”
    On Toronto’s penalty kill:
“Yeah, it was huge for us. The guys in front of me did a great job. We had a bunch of big blocks in the first, and in the third again, and they have a great power play over there and I just thought our guys in
front of me did the best job they could possibly do to go into overtime, big kill at the end of the game, unfortunately we didn’t get the second point.”
    AUSTON MATTHEWS
    On Jack Campbell’s play tonight:

“First of all, I think Soup played unbelievable tonight honestly. I mean some of the saves he made tonight, one of them is going to be save of the year honestly so I think he did everything he could. That’s a really good team over there and obviously they aren’t going to go away, you saw that tonight, but Soup did
everything he could. They make plays, they have some good players on their side and they kind of got the momentum going their way in the second half of the game and were able to tie it up but by no means do I think Jack Campbell didn’t play up to his standard tonight cause he was unbelievable for us just like
he’s been unbelievable for us all year.”
On starting the road trip with a point:
“Yeah, it would have nice to get the second point but that’s a really good team over there, they are going to get their chances and I think they just were able to get the momentum on their side and able to score a couple goals and kind of get that shift over there, the crowd was really into it and they forced OT. I think
the whole time we obviously expected a win and just a couple minor details that kind of slipped that they were able to capitalize on. Like I said, that’s a good team over there and I think we feel really strongly
about ourselves as well. I think we did a lot of really good things but obviously were leaving a little bit disappointed not getting that second point.”
    ALEXANDER KERFOOT
On starting the road trip with a point:
“It is tough coming in here. We’re playing in front of no fans. I don’t know, the energy was high in that game, the crowd was into it. When they started pushing there in the third it was a lot of fun to be out there but I thought our start was good, all things considered. Got out to a lead, held it, the game flow kind of
turned in their favour, they gave it to us pretty good there in the latter half of the game, we were on our
heels a bit. But then we had pushed ourselves, Soupy was great all night keeping us in it and obviously it is disappointing giving up the lead and only giving up one point.”
On playing on a line with Auston Matthews:
“Yeah, that’s pretty self-explanatory. I think he’s obviously an elite player in this league and I think that anyone who gets to play with him is lucky to play with him. You’ve seen it all year and we see it every day.”

    POSTGAME QUOTES:
    HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE

On Mikheyev’s play since his return from injury:
“Well, he makes us a better team, there’s no question about that. That’s not just because he’s scored here, we’ve know that as long as Mickey’s been with us. He makes us a deeper team, he makes us a
better team. I thought he had a great camp, a great preseason. He was taking advantage of any of the additional opportunities that we were giving him. It’s nice to see that continue here. Because he had such
a good camp, we wanted to try to get him off to a good start here, try to pick up where he left off, so that’s why we’ve had him right away take the spot on the power play and get some minutes that way. I don’t
think it could have worked out any better in terms of him getting the production here early to get him a boost after such a long layoff.”
On the team’s effort after falling behind 2-1:
“I was happy we found our way back there. Obviously, a huge goal for us there at the end of the first period. I didn’t like, obviously, that segment of the period there in the first. We got the lead then we had quite an edge in shots and territory and things like that, and I thought we got a little sloppy with our
structure defensively and it just opened things up for them and all of a sudden it’s 2-1. We gave them life – that’s something we didn’t want to do at all tonight – we did that but I thought we handled it well from
there so that was a good sign.”
    JOHN TAVARES
    On tonight win:
‘Yeah it was hard fought and you know they’re a desperate hockey team obviously looking to get back on track and competed hard, every 50-50 loose puck was a battle. They play a quick game. We got off to a decent start actually in the first and then I think they tied it up and seemed to get their game going and obviously we got a big goal to tie it up and kind of regroup and knew we needed to be a lot better. Overall, it still wasn’t our best but we’re kind of getting back in the swing of things coming off of the long break we
had but did some better things tonight and thought it was a good hard fought game and we were able to find a way to get it done in the third period. It was great to see Mickey keep it rolling and seeing guys finish the job defensively. Soup was tremendous again and we just competed till the end and found a
    way.”
    WILLIAM NYLANDER
On the play of Ilya Mikheyev since the return to play:

“He’s been flying and the pucks are going in for him right now which is great. He’s had so many chances and for example last season but he’s got an unbelievable shot so he’s been capitalizing and flying out there.”
On what it means for Mikheyev to get some powerplay time:
“It’s huge, it gets your confidence up and feel for the puck. You obviously touch the puck a little bit more on the powerplay with a little bit more time and it helps a lot.”
    JACK CAMPBELL
    On facing the Oilers:
“We knew they were going to come out and make a push early and they did, they scored a couple nice goals but our team has great resilience and we came back to tie it up after the first period. I thought it was a great battle, kind of playoff feel a little bit and we were able to sneak away with two big points.”
    On the team’s defensive play:
“The guys did a great job. They have some super talented players over there and were making some plays but I thought our guys did a great job of adjusting and committing to the structure. We got a couple big goals at the other end and it was just a great win.
