    POSTGAME QUOTES:
    HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE
On Auston Matthews scoring 50 goals:

“It was fun. The fans enjoyed it. It made for a great atmosphere there in the third period. They were
encouraging him and pushing Auston and I thought it was great. Good to see the fans have that moment
and Auston to have that accomplishment here on home ice, it was great.”
    AUSTON MATTHEWS
On if he thought scoring 50 might not happen tonight:
“I don’t know, I just keep playing and keep shooting and obviously I had some good looks but not sure if I
ever envisioned it being an empty net goal but I’ll take it, a goal’s a goal. Like you said, I had some good
chances tonight just wasn’t going in and fortunately it did in the last minute.”
On the reception he received from his teammates after the game:
“Wet. I got pretty soaked, lots of water and stuff but it’s awesome. The love and support from all these
guys, we’ve got an extremely close group. This obviously doesn’t happen without all these guys on this
team so it means a lot.”
    MARK GIORDANO
On Auston Matthews scoring 50 goals:

“Pretty cool, I think watching him on tv over the years and playing against him is one thing but when you
get to see him every day, day-in and day-out, in practice with his shot and his release, that’s pretty
impressive. I honestly think I’m more impressed watching him play defensively since I’ve been here. It’s
been unreal, the way he backchecks and plays in his own end and then when he gets his chances it’s
pretty cool. That moment must have been pretty special for him.”
On scoring his first goal as a Maple Leaf:
“It felt pretty good. I think it was Johnny going back door there and I was trying to hit him but I’ll take that
bounce. It was nice to see it go in. I thought individually I wasn’t very good to start the game so I felt like
that really helped me get going and move on from a couple mistakes.”
    WILLIAM NYLANDER
On Matthews scoring 50 and the fan reaction:
“It was pretty unreal. It actually reminded me of when I was younger and my dad was playing in
Washington and Ovechkin scored 50 one night when I was there. I think it was the night where he did the
fire gestured. It brought back some memories and it’s just incredible and well deserved.”

    POSTGAME QUOTES:
    HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE
    On tonight’s game:

“I would say complete. We gave a couple late ones up there in third, we don’t want to do that, but I just
thought we didn’t give them a lot. We managed a couple of their strong pushes that they had but
otherwise a real patient game and we took advantage of the opportunities that we had.”
    JOHN TAVARES
On goaltender Petr Mrázek leaving the game with an injury:

“He’s obviously has bounced back really well since some tough circumstances for himself personally and
we know how hard he’s been working to get things going and wanting to contribute like he can with the
type of goalie he is so you just hope it’s nothing more and something small, hopefully minor. You hate
seeing it and hopefully he’s back quickly.”
    On Ilya Lyubushkin’s injury:
“He’s come in and fit in really nice with us and obviously plays a really sound, strong defensive role and fit
into our group really nicely off the ice as well and you don’t want to see anyone in that position so hate to
see it and hopefully he’s alright and won’t be anything significant.”
On playing with only four defenceman after Holl and Lyubushkin left the game due to injury:
“Considering the circumstances of the game and the lead we’d built, it’s just important that we’re not
getting caught in our end and getting hemmed in there having to spend a lot of energy because they’ve
got a whole bunch of time to catch their breath in-between shifts so just making sure pucks are
consistently moving forward and they have to come through all five of us defensively and we’re just doing
really good things with the puck through the neutral zone, entering the offensive zone, making sure it’s
just really good decisions and that we’re aren’t just giving them any easy plays back up our ice. Especially
since they’re trying to change quick and stay fresh so not getting caught in any changes and just being
aware of some of those circumstances and what we’re dealing with. Obviously building the lead that we
    did helps with that to.”
    MORGAN RIELLY
On playing four defencemen in the third period:

“It’s doable, in terms of the workload and conditioning side of it. You have to take shorter shifts and it’s a
bit harder with structure because you have to be thinking about it a lot. You’re kind of hyper aware if
you’re trapped in your own zone. I think we iced the puck more in the third than we would have liked to
but I thought we did a good job of it tonight. Our forwards did a good job too helping us out, we talked
about that in-between periods when we knew it was possible we were going to go down to four about not
turning the puck over in the neutral zone, playing short and smart with it so I thought we did a good job.”
    ALEXANDER KERFOOT
    On tonight’s effort:

“I think just the full 60 minutes, just stuck with it the whole game. It was a pretty complete game out of us,
didn’t give them much life there. Towards the end they got a couple but we still felt like we were in control
of the game and these guys have been playing as good as anyone in the league so that’s a really good
    divisional win for us.”
    On being down two defencemen:
“I thought we were pretty calm and poised. Obviously it’s a big load for the d-men playing back there,
playing with only four guys for a full period but they handled it well. All of those guys have played big
minutes in the past and they did a great job for us. I thought we insolated them pretty well and Källgren
did a great job in net.”
    COLIN BLACKWELL
On scoring his first as a Leaf:

“Yeah, I haven’t scored here since 2011 so it’s been a while since back in high school. First couple
games, just getting comfortable. I thought I kind of had a little bit more to give and to get that goal in front
of friends and family it definitely means a lot. My birthday was yesterday, parents 35th wedding
anniversary was yesterday so pretty cool with a little return home.”
On being able to see his family:
“It’s awesome. Being in Seattle was pretty far away so didn’t get a chance to see them. I came here
earlier in the season but just to be able to spend some time with them on a special occasion, you sacrifice
a little bit during the season being away from your families so getting a chance to see them, I don’t take
    that for granted.”

    POSTGAME QUOTES:
    HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE
    On tonight’s defensive effort:

“I think we remained committed to it all the way from the start of the game. We made a mistake on the
first goal for sure but that’s the most dangerous team in the league, maybe say for Colorado, on the rush
and I didn’t think we gave up anything on the rush today so it was a huge challenge for our team to do
that and we stuck with that all the way through. So when you do that and you’re playing against the top
offensive team in the NHL, you’re taking away a lot of their weapons right there and it gave us a chance.
Obviously, the start was huge today you know so we’re a leg up in the game all the way throughout, not
unlike Montreal last night but obviously we finished it all the way through with an outstanding performance
on special teams, great goaltending, good third period where we didn’t give up a ton and then we scored
to extend our lead and we did a good job in hanging on there in the six-on-five so great effort, good win
    from our team.”
    JOHN TAVARES
    On tonight’s win:
“I think it was a really good sixty minutes for us. I think over the last little bit here our game has started to
round out a little more consistently and into the form we’d like. Obviously we didn’t get the result last night
but I think overall tons of good things and just the way we stuck with it. We really tried to slow them down
given how good they’ve been offensively this year and with the type of players they have and how
dangerous they can be and how quickly the game can change. We tried to make it difficult on them to get
on the inside and not create in the middle of the ice and especially off the rush. It was good attention to
detail all around and good job of getting some pucks to the net and sustaining some offence but also
understanding and being responsible defensively as well. Teams have countered on us at times this year
and we knew this team was quick on the transition so good job there too.”
    MITCH MARNER
    On tonight’s game:
“We played the way we wanted to, not giving up a whole lot. Offensively I thought our line did a good job
and both the penalty kill and power play came through when we needed them to. All aspects, what we
asked for out of each other, we did it.”
    On tonight’s defensive effort:
“Just like I said, we didn’t give up too many chances offensively with odd man rushes or anything like that.
We played well with our gap control, forwards made reads quickly and our defence had great gaps as
well with being tight up so just overall the five guys on the ice always were just playing in sync there and
that’s what we talked about and what we needed to do so just a good job executing.”
    MORGAN RIELLY
    On tonight’s win:
“It felt good, obviously these back-to-back games are not always easy but it’s good to have a strong effort
and we haven’t played these guys, they’re in our division and having a great year so it was a good reason
to be ready and we were, so that’s a good sign.”
On what he noticed in tonight’s defensive effort:
“I think just the commitment. We’ve talked about it a lot and it’s just the mindset for us I feel like. When we
commit ourselves and we play with that structure and we buy in and understand the importance we are
able to do it and execute good offensive plays and good defensive structure so it’s just a matter of being
    consistent for us.”
    PETR MRÁZEK
    On tonight’s win:
“I felt good. We two points against a really good team, at home, a division opponent so a huge win.”
On facing such an offensive team:
“They threw a lot of pucks to the net, looking for first seams and backdoors and you have to be aware and
    be patient in the crease.”

    POSTGAME QUOTES:
    HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE
    On tonight’s game:

“We played really well. I’d take that game 82 times.”
On whether the difference tonight was facing a strong goaltender with the team posting 51 shots:
“Not all the shots we got are of high quality. There is a lot of perimeter stuff there. We had more than
enough chances to score more than we did. Didn’t make good on some of our stuff around the net and
we didn’t get much luck. We had some pucks that the goalie found through traffic really well and some
tips and things like that, that normally when you get that many at him, one of those find a way in for you.
That didn’t happen for us tonight and we didn’t score enough to pull in the game so you let them run
around and we make a couple mistakes and they made good on it but as I said I’d take that game 82
    times from our team.”
    AUSTON MATTHEWS
On Toronto taking control during the first period and whether the game got away from the team as

    it went on:
“I don’t think it really necessarily got away, I thought we played a really good game for the most part. I
thought our start was really good, I thought our process was really good and I mean I just think our time
and possession and scoring chances and opportunities like we had plenty of them so they hung around,
their goalie made some big saves and they hung around. They are a good team, they have good players,
skilled players that can obviously put the puck in the net and make plays and they hung around and like I
said I thought we did a lot of really good things tonight, especially our start but we couldn’t capitalize on
some chances and we couldn’t extend our lead and like I said they hung around.”
    WILLIAM NYLANDER
    On his game-tying goal:

“It was a great play by Mitch and John and I was just able to tap it in so it was nice to get the 2-2 goal. We
are going to end up in situations like this coming down the line so we have to be confident when were are
    down.”
    ERIK KÄLLGREN
On tonight’s game at Bell Centre
    :
“It was loud. Good crowd. It was exciting but not happy with the game.”

    POSTGAME QUOTES:
    HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE
    On Petr Mrázek’s play tonight:

“I thought he looked really good. I thought he looked calm and confident. Tough game you know you only
get a few shots in that first period, not a lot of work and the couple of shots he got were tough saves
there. Then all of a sudden in the second period things turned and there were a lot more really good looks
for them that I thought he looked good, that was a great step for him.”
On Mark Giordano’s comfort level in his debut:
“You talk about his comfort level, my comfort level was high. When he was out there and the puck was on
his stick things seemed to settle down and you could just tell he’s a veteran. He knows how to play.
Despite coming in new teammates, new city, new system, all those kind of things he’s just confident and
moving pucks, defending, getting in people’s way so I really liked his play tonight.

    POSTGAME QUOTES:
    HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE
On what Nashville did right to claim the win:

“They played hard, they played structured, they didn’t give us anything off the rush. They gave us a
forechecking game today on both sides. They forechecked better than us early in the game for sure. I
thought we got better at that once we realized that’s what the game is really going to require. They made
it hard that way, hard to get much happening at the net but I thought defensively we did a good job and
we didn’t give up a great deal, so that allowed us to hang around in the game but you’ve got one of the
league’s best goalies at the other end and he’s playing with the lead and trying to find a way out of a hole
isn’t a good way to win.”
    AUSTON MATTHEWS
    On tonight’s game:
“Yeah maybe a little bit flat to start. I thought in the second period we kind of got going a little bit.
Obviously they win the special teams battle there, they get one. We still fall behind and kind of have to dig
ourselves out of a hole so I thought we did some good things but I think on the forecheck side of it we
probably didn’t forecheck good enough tonight and they’re a team that plays really well with the neutral
zone and their structure and stuff they don’t give you much off the rush. I think we can maybe clean up a
little bit of the forecheck side of things but I think we did some good things and then obviously some stuff
    we’d like to clean up.”
    TRAVIS DERMOTT
    On Toronto’s slow start:
“Yeah, I think that’s kind of the style they play. They want to bore you down. I know they’ve got a lot of fire
power up front especially high up in the lineup but I feel like they really wait for us to make mistakes and
that’s when they capitalize so I feel like that’s why the first little bit felt a bit boring but that’s when you kind
of set the standard for the game and you tell them that we’re not going to make those little mistakes for
you guys to get your chances and we’re going to push. Even if we don’t have many openings that’s the
time that we really have to stay strict within ourselves and just stick to plan and not open up because
that’s obviously when they get their chances so I thought we started okay with that where we might not
have had all the energy and buzz that we would have liked but, understanding their style of play, it was
almost kind of what we expected so I think it’s just sticking with that and learning from this game.
Learning that we can’t always come out and be fast paced and taking it always to them, sometimes we’ve
got to switch up our game plan a little bit and just focus on not making mistakes and wait for them to
crack instead of the other way around.”
    ERIK KÄLLGREN
    On tonight’s game:
“Tough game. I think they played well. So did we, but they scored on their chances so tough loss.”

    Nashville Predators: Media Notes
    THE CAPTAIN
  • Roman Josi leads NHL defensemen and the Predators in points this season with 72 (17g-55a).
  • He’s established career highs in goals (17), assists (55) and points (72). His 17 goals are tied for the second-most among NHL blueliners.
  • His 55 assists are the most in a season in Predators history; his 72 points are the most by a defenseman and tied for the third-most among all skaters
in a season in team history.
  • He reached the 70-point mark in his 59th game of the season. Only six defensemen in NHL history have reached the 70-point mark in fewer games:
Paul Coffey (7x; last: 54 GP in 1990-91), Bobby Orr (6x; last: 37 GP in 1974-75), Denis Potvin (3x; last: 51 GP in 1978-79), Brian Leetch (57 GP in 1991-
92), Phil Housley (57 GP in 1991-92) and Al MacInnis (57 GP in 1990-91).
  • Thursday at Philadelphia (3a) was his third consecutive game with at least three points (2g-8a in 3 GP). Over the past 30 years, only two other
defensemen have accomplished the feat: Erik Karlsson (4g-6a in 3 GP) in 2011-12 and Ray Bourque (9a in 3 GP) in 1993-94.
  • Josi is currently on a season-best eight-game point streak (3g-16a).
  • He’s posted 10 points (2g-8a) in his last three games, tying Steve Sullivan (5g-5a in 2003-04) and Scott Walker (2g-8a in 2003-04) for the most points
in a three-game span in franchise history.
  • He’s tallied four four-point games this season, the first defenseman to do so since Kevin Hatcher in 1992-93; no other NHL blueliner has more than one
    in 2021-22.
  • He’s posted nine games with at least three points, the most among NHL defensemen; he’s recorded 19 multi-point games, tied for the most among
    League blueliners.
  • He recorded his 500th career NHL point on March 2 at Seattle. He reached the 500-point mark in 732 games; among active defensemen, only Erik
Karlsson (613 GP) achieved the milestone in fewer contests. Only four defensemen over the past 25 years have recorded 500 career points in fewer
games than Josi (732 GP): Erik Karlsson (613 GP, achieved in 2017-18), Sergei Zubov (680 GP, achieved in 2001-02), Nicklas Lidstrom (701 GP,
achieved in 2000-01) and Sandis Ozolinsh (728 GP, achieved in 2002-03).
    SCORESBERG
  • Filip Forsberg scored his 210th career NHL goal on Thursday at Philadelphia, tying David Legwand for the most in franchise history.
  • Forsberg is tied for ninth in the NHL in goals (32) and third in even-strength goals (27).
  • Forsberg scored twice on Sunday at Minnesota to record his third career 30-goal season, the most in Predators history. He required the fewest
individual games (46) in franchise history to reach the 30-goal mark in a season, topping the previous best set by Viktor Arvidsson (49 GP) in 2018-19.
  • He is two goals from a career high and three goals from breaking Arvidsson’s record for most goals in a season in Predators history (34, set in 2018-
    19).
  • He’s scored 21 goals in his last 27 games dating back to Dec. 16; he has five goals in his last five games.
  • Among NHL skaters who have played in at least 30 games this season, he is first in goals per 60 minutes at 5-on-5 (2.03) and second in goals per
    game (0.67).
  • Forsberg scored a career-high four goals on Nov. 30 vs. Columbus; he also tied the franchise record for goals in a game, joining Rocco Grimaldi
(March 25, 2021 vs. Detroit) and Eric Nystrom (Jan. 24, 2014 at Calgary).
    TOP-RATED ROOKIES
  • Predators rookies have scored 32 goals, the most in the NHL this season. Nashville rookies have compiled 87 points and account for 16.1 percent of
the team’s points, the second- and third-most, respectively, in the NHL in 2021-22.
  • Tanner Jeannot has 35 points (20g-15a) this season, the sixth-most among all NHL rookies. His 20 goals are tied for the most among NHL rookies and

    POSTGAME QUOTES:
    HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE
    On tonight’s win:

“I liked a lot about it. Obviously it took us a little while to get going with our game and we figured that
would be the case just with how Carolina is on top of you and they don’t give you a lot of time to move the
puck or anything like that so offensively we knew it was going to take a little while not unlike Dallas. I
thought defensively though I didn’t like some of the things we did early in the game. We gave up a couple
odd man rushes early that kind of opened the game up a little bit for them and gave up some chances
and shots. I thought we really found our game in the back half of the first period and then certainly the
second period was really good for us. Once again, like Dallas we did a lot of good things in the third
period. That’s two games in a row now that we’ve gone into the third period with a lead and have a
chance to own it against two real good teams so that’s a nice job by our guys.”
    MITCH MARNER
On Källgren and the team stepping up without Matthews in the lineup:

“Another great game by Kallgren in net, just coming in calm, collected and making a lot of big saves for us
and especially one of those in the second, keeping that game to what it was. Like I said, when guys go
out of the lineup we know guys have to step up and take a bigger role on and I think especially that
Kämpf line has done a great job doing it.”
    On the team’s effort:
“We just played our game. Played our game with quick speed… I think we’ve got to get more shots to the
net obviously and get more guys there to create a little more havoc but other than that I thought we did a
good job of keeping them to the outside and not giving them too many great looks.”
    ONDŘEJ KAŠE
    On his goal tonight:

“It was a great play by William and Kerfoot along the wall so I think the whole play was really good and
    I’m happy with that.”
    On Källgren’s play in net:
“He played a really good game again. It was a very tough game today and was almost like a playoff game
and he did a great job, he played unbelievable so very excited for him.”
    ERIK KÄLLGREN
On what he liked about tonight’s performance:

    “That we won the game.”
On comparing tonight’s game with his first start:
“I think I let go some bad rebounds today. Other than that, pretty similar.”
On his toe save early in the second period:
“It was a situation in front of the net and he was kind of all by himself so I just tried to stick my left pad out
there and got lucky and saved it.”

PATRICK’S STARS
The Hurricanes are playing on St. Patrick’s Day for the 13th time in franchise history, and Hartford/Carolina has posted a 4-7-0-1 record in the previous
12 games on March 17 (3-3-0-1 since relocation). The Hurricanes most recently played on St. Patrick’s Day in 2018, when they suffered when they
suffered a 4-2 loss vs. PHI. Carolina’s last March 17 win came in 2012, as the team earned a 5-3 win at MIN. Ian Cole and Jordan Staal have skated in
the most St. Patrick’s Day games of any Hurricanes skaters (6), and Staal leads the team in career St. Patrick’s Day points (2-2—4). His two goals on
March 17 also rank tied with Nino Niederreiter for the team lead, while Cole paces the team in St. Patrick’s Day assists (3).
POT O’ GOALS
Sebastian Aho scored an extra-attacker goal at PIT (3/13), extending his point streak to five games (3/4-3/13: 3g, 2a). Aho has now also scored a goal
in each of his last three games (3/10-3/13: 3g), tied for the longest goal streak of any Hurricanes player in 2021-22 and for his own season-long goal
streak (10/21-10/25: 4g, 1a; 12/7-12/11: 5g, 2a). He has recorded 16 points in his last 16 games (2/8-3/13: 8g, 8a), with points in 14 of those games.
Half of Aho’s points over that span (4-4—8) have come on the power play, where he ranks tied for fifth in the NHL with a career- and team-high 12 goals
this season. He has now scored 172 goals in his NHL/Hurricanes career and trails Rod Brind’Amour (2000-10: 174) by only two goals for the fourthmost goals in team history (since relocation).
LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN
After missing the last 10 games due to an upper-body injury suffered at PIT (2/20), Brendan Smith looks to make his return to the lineup on Thursday.
Signed as a free agent in the offseason, Smith has tallied five points (3g, 2a) in 28 games in 2021-22 and ranks tied for fourth in goals among
Hurricanes defensemen. He also ranks third among Carolina’s blueliners in hits (45), and his 6.80 hits per 60 minutes of ice time trail only Jalen
Chatfield (8.11) for the lead among that group.
GREEN BERETS
The Hurricanes went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill at PIT (3/13), and they are now 64-for-70 on the kill over their last 21 games (1/25-3/13: 91.4%). Carolina
is 31-8-3 (.774) when holding the opposing power play scoreless, and the Hurricanes are one of only two NHL teams to accomplish the feat 42 times in
2021-22 (PIT). Carolina’s 89.4% penalty kill percentage leads the league this season and would mark the highest single-season mark in franchise
history (2000-01: 87.2%). The Hurricanes also boast the NHL’s fourth-best power play (24.9%), but they have been held scoreless on the manadvantage in three straight games (3/10-3/13: 0-for-7) after converting on nine of their previous 25 power plays (2/18-3/6: 36.0%).
GETTIN’ JIGGY WIT IT
Jordan Staal tallied an assist at PIT (3/13), and he has now recorded 11 points in his last 16 games (2/8-3/13: 6g, 5a), matching his total through the
opening 41 games of the season (10/14-2/7: 2g, 9a). He also posted a team-high six hits on Sunday, and he leads the Hurricanes in that category this
season (175). Staal also paces the team in faceoff percentage (56.6%, min. 3 GP), and his faceoff win rate ranks tied for ninth in the NHL (min. 500
draws) as he aims to top 54.0% in the faceoff circle for the ninth consecutive season (2013-22: 56.5%).
FORTUNE 100
Steven Lorentz is set to play his 100th career NHL/Hurricanes game against Toronto on Thursday. He has recorded 11 points (7g, 4a) in 54 games this
season and ended a 21-game goal drought with the opening goal vs. PHI (3/12). Selected by Carolina in the seventh round (186th overall) of the 2015
NHL Draft, Lorentz looks to join Craig Adams (1996, 9-223: 427 GP) and Steve Halko (1992, 10-225: 155 GP) as the third player drafted by
Hartford/Carolina with the 186th overall pick or later to skate in at least 100 games with the franchise. A native of Kitchener, Ont., he has posted two
points (1g, 1a) in two career games against the Maple Leafs.
SOUTHERN CHARM
The Hurricanes are making their final trip north of the border to face Toronto on Thursday. Carolina has posted a 10-3-1 record against Canadian
opponents in 2021-22, including a 5-2-1 record in games played in Canada. Since Rod Brind’Amour took over behind the bench in 2018-19, the
Hurricanes are 20-9-5 against Canadian teams and 10-5-4 north of the border.
EXTRA STOUT
Since the start of December, Frederik Andersen has posted a 19-3-2 record, 2.07 goals-against average, .930 save percentage and two shutouts,
while Antti Raanta has earned a 7-4-1 record, 2.27 goals-against average, .921 save percentage and two shutouts. The Hurricanes lead the league in
goals-against average (2.33) and rank second in save percentage (.919) behind only NYR (.920). Andersen, who registered a 149-74-36 record, 2.79
goals-against average, .914 save percentage and 13 shutouts in 268 appearances with Toronto from 2016-21, ranks first in the NHL in goals-against
average (2.06), tied for second in wins (30) and second in save percentage (.929) in 2021-22 (min. 15 GP).
DUBLIN UP
The Hurricanes are opening their 11th of 14 sets of back-to-back games in 2021-22. Carolina is currently 7-2-1 in the first game and 5-4-1 in the second
game of back-to-backs this season, and the team’s .750 points percentage in the first game ranks tied with FLA (6-2-0) for fifth in the NHL.
