POSTGAME QUOTES: HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE On tonight’s game and the team’s successful penalty kill: “…We had a lot of guys that were really good today, our team played really well. Our crowd was unbelievable tonight. I thought the crowd was the first star of the game, despite having a lot of guys that were good. I thought that they carried us through that five-minute kill. Our players played hard, they got life and we had some chances and the way that our crowd responded and then didn’t let up for the rest of the game from there. I always get asked questions down the stretch of the regular season about how important home ice was and I felt that it would be important, but I didn’t feel like it would be that important. It’s my first playoff game coaching the Leafs with a full building here and I certainly felt, and talking to some others who have been in the building and that have been through this, our crowd, you can feel the love for this team and the excitement for this team and I thought they were outstanding tonight and our team just didn’t look back.” AUSTON MATTHEWS On tonight’s game: “I thought we played fast. I thought we played through the contact, we played through a long five-minute penalty kill there. Our penalty kill was huge tonight, I think that brought us a lot of momentum. Soupy was incredible and we were able to capitalize on some chances so I thought it was a really good effort by us. A lot of really good things that we did tonight but it’s a series. It’s going to be a long series, it’s a really good team on the other end and they’re going to be ready next game. Have to watch this one, learn from it, obviously a really great win but we have to move on to the next one.” MITCH MARNER On tonight’s game: “Happy with the way we just performed. Didn’t let anything really bother us. Two big penalty kills right off the start but just from there I think the whole group settled in nicely. Felt like there wasn’t a whole lot going on five-on-five to be honest but other than that we played our game, we played with speed, we played with quickness and we got around the net.” JACK CAMPBELL On tonight’s win, earning a shutout: “I’m just really proud of the effort in front of me. Starting off the game with a couple huge kills and boys just played so hard. Obviously, they’re an amazing team over there, they aren’t going to be thrilled about the game one. But that’s what it is, it’s game one of the series and we really like the way we played but we have to refocus here.

POSTGAME QUOTES: HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE On how the team responded from Thursday’s loss to Tampa Bay: “I thought our guys played hard tonight, easily could have won the game. I thought we won the first and third periods especially. I thought they won the second period not just in the scoring but they carried play and stuff like that but first and third period we had tons of opportunity. Against this team though, you have to score more than two. It’s real tough to win when you only get two against them and we had more than enough looks to have four or five, you don’t make them count and that team hangs around. That’s what they’ve been doing all season, they find ways to win.” AUSTON MATTHEWS On how he felt in his return to the lineup and on tonight’s game: “I didn’t feel too bad. I thought we created a lot, thought we had a lot of really good looks. Maybe bounces didn’t go our way tonight but all in all felt pretty solid. It’s a game of inches out there obviously and it’s a really good team on the other end and you know they’re never going to go away so really tight game and I thought we did a lot of good things but definitely would have liked to see us get that extra point.” On how the team responded from Thursday’s loss to Tampa Bay: “Much better effort. I thought we were a lot more competitive, physical. I thought we had much more of a purpose tonight and I think it showed but like I said dropping a point we definitely leave here with a little bit of a sour taste in your mouth but I definitely liked our effort much better than the other night.” MITCH MARNER On tonight’s game: “I thought we did good. I thought we did a pretty good job of limiting their chances off rushes. Still gave up too many opportunities around our net. For us I think it’s just hanging onto the puck a little bit more in the o-zone, trying to create more stuff in the o-zone, trying to hang onto it and not try and get into that rush game.” On Matthews’ return to the lineup: “He looked great. He was making a lot of great plays out there. Had a lot of great opportunities. I thought he was buzzing throughout the whole night.” JACK CAMPBELL On how the team responded from Thursday’s loss to Tampa Bay: “I thought the guys responded well. Florida is played incredibly well, obviously their record speaks for itself but I thought the guys came out and competed all night and faced some adversity and battled through it. Obviously wanted to come away with two points and just kind of miss timed that poke check but it is what it is and proud of the effort from the guys.” On Matthews’ return to the lineup: “Just loved seeing him out there with the guys competing. I know it meant a lot to him. He looks amazing so great to see him back out there.”
• The Toronto Raptors begin the 2022 NBA Playoffs on Saturday night against the Philadelphia 76ers at Wells Fargo Center. The Raptors (48-34) won 14 of their last 18 games (Mar. 9 – Apr. 10) to finish in fifth place in the East. Toronto has qualified for the postseason the eighth time in the last nine seasons. • This series marks the third time Toronto and Philadelphia will meet in the playoffs. The previous two series oth went seven games. Four players remain from Toronto’s 2019 roster – OG Anunoby, Chris Boucher, Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet. The Sixers have three players left from the 2019 series – Joel Embiid, Tobias Harris and Furkan Korkmaz. • Toronto won three of four games against Philadelphia this season. Pascal Siakam averaged a team-high 30.3 points and shot .507 (35-69) from the field in three games vs. the Sixers this year. Only three other rookies have totaled 1000/500/250 in last 20 years – Luka Doncic (2018-19), Ben Simmons (2017-18) and Blake Griffin (2010-11). • Toronto ranked second in the NBA in both offensive rebounds (13.4) and second chance points (16.5) this season. The Raptors had five different players collected more than 100 offensive rebounds: Scottie Barnes (195), Chris Boucher (179), Precious Achiuwa (146), Pascal Siakam (128) and Khem Birch (122). Barnes led all rookie in offensive rebounds, while Boucher topped all reserves in the NBA with 155. • Fred VanVleet earned his first All-Star selection, becoming the first undrafted All-Star since Ben Wallace in 2006. VanVleet averaged career highs of 20.3 points, 6.7 assists and 4.4 rebounds in 65 games. The Raptors were 7-1 this year when he scored 30 or more points. It’s much deserved and to finish it with an exclamation point. I think you write it like that. It’s pretty good.” On what he said to Matthews after scoring the goal: “Just congratulated him. I just told him it’s a great accomplishment. The Leafs organization has been around for a long time. A lot of great players. It’s pretty special for him to be at the top of that list.” AUSTON MATTHEWS On scoring his 55th goal of the season, breaking the franchise record for most goals scored in a season: “It felt good. A lot of emotions running through your mind and body when you see the puck go in so I don’t really know what else to say but it’s definitely exciting and a really fun moment.” More on breaking the record: “I just saw the puck go in and I was just so excited honestly, there’s not really that much else to it. Gio made a really nice pass and he put it right in my wheelhouse, so I just tried to attack the puck and I was able to sneak it in. There was a lot of stuff going through my mind I guess.” MORGAN RIELLY On Matthews breaking the franchise record for most goals scored in a season: “We’re incredibly happy for Auston. He’s a great person, the way he lives his life, the way that he leads and the teammate that he is and how humble he is even though these accomplishments keep coming his way. You couldn’t be happier for a guy like that. He works extremely hard, he deserves it and he’s not done yet so it’s been cool to watch.” On what impresses him the most about Auston: “Well I think just how he plays every night. It’s always the same, he shows up and plays hard. He’s a dog on the puck and when he gets chances it often ends up going in the net. He’s a pretty unique player and like I said for all the things he’s accomplished at this point in his career, for him to be the type of person he is and how humble he is it is truly the most impressive part.” MITCH MARNER On Matthews breaking Rick Vaive’s franchise record of most goals in a single season: “It’s amazing, it’s very impressive. It’s a hard thing to score a lot of goals in this league and he’s made it look really easy, especially over the last couple games and really couple years. It’s been a lot of fun to watch and be on the ice for a lot of those and help him achieve that goal. He puts in a lot of work in the summer to make sure he keeps getting better and better and it’s coming out to show every single night.” MARK GIORDANO On assisting on Matthews record breaking 55th goal of the season: “It was pretty cool to be part of that tonight and for Matthews to get the winner like that, it felt right so it was a cool game to be a part of.” On the sequence leading to the goal: “We had a lot of looks on the powerplay, we sort of had them hemmed in there and any time you get a rebound or a second look you know the goalie is sort of moving around and you’re hoping to get one of those lanes open for those seams so that you get him moving and it was obviously a great shot. I just laid it there for him and he just pounded it.”
