On tonight’s game: I thought we played a good first, I thought we didn’t win any faceoffs in the second and spent more time in the D-zone. We had lots of chances. I was in here the other night and Fleury was real good the other night. I thought he was real good. We had some chances, hit some posts. I think Petan — I could be wrong, I haven’t seen the replay — I thought the net was empty there and Fleury made a great save. The bottom line is we’ve got to stick with it and just keep grinding. We had a chance on the power play at the end there and we didn’t execute on that. It’s disappointing but I’m always about the process and how hard guys play. We played way harder so I thought that was good. I thought Hyman was back, I thought Mikheyev really had a good step. That was positive for us.
On what needs to be changed on the penalty kill: We’ve got to keep it out. I didn’t think we were that bad tonight on it, to tell you the truth, but they got two on it so that’s not good enough. We’ve just got to keep working at it, we’ll spend more time at it. Maybe early in the year when we didn’t skate as much in the pregame skates, we should have spent more time doing it. We did that because we were trying to keep our guys fresher and the science part of it, but, in the end, you’ve got to execute on those things so that’s on me.
On how deflating it is to give up a goal immediately after tying the game: It’s disappointing, obviously. We turned the puck over and they came in and shot it in. I still thought we were resilient. We talked about it before the game, we have to show good mental toughness and just keep grinding every shift, shift after shift, whether it goes good or bad. We’ve been guilty of when it goes bad, when they score, we wilt. There’s no sense doing that, just keep playing. I’ve been around a long time, you’re in lots of situations where you don’t win for a while and you end up having a real good year. Just keep grinding.
FREDERIK ANDERSEN (33 SAVES)
On the team’s play tonight: The streak doesn’t really look too pretty, but I thought we made some steps in the right direction today. I definitely think we came ready to play and obviously a great hockey game, too. Fleury played really well down there and I think it could have gone either way. I thought we definitely had something to build on.
On how the team is processing the current stretch: We had a good talk yesterday to try and improve and I thought we answered pretty well today. It could have gone either way, I think. I got outplayed a little bit by Fleury down there. That happens. Again, I thought we had some good things to keep going.
ZACH HYMAN (1 GOAL)
On tonight’s game: I think there’s a lot of positives to take away from today. I think when you’re losing, it’s hard to stay the course but I think we played really well today. We had our chances when the game was on the line there. It was a tight game; we just couldn’t finish it. We need to be better on the PK, better on special teams there. It was good to get a powerplay goal. I think we took a big step today even though we lost. The next game is going to be really important for us but I think that we can build some confidence from this game moving forward.
On what the team can take away from tonight’s game: I think we didn’t quit. I think that we stuck with it. You go down 3-1, you can kind of pack it in, but I think we were strong throughout that third period and really pushed back. Fleury made a big save on [Petan] there, [Mikheyev] hit the crossbar. These aren’t excuses, this is just reality. They won the game but I think that we had a chance to win that game, we were in the game the whole way through and we didn’t quit so I think that’s really important and something to build off of moving forward.
JASON SPEZZA (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)
On if the team can take some positives out of tonight’s loss: Yeah, definitely a much better effort. It was good hockey game. We lost the special teams battle and that ends up being the game. It’s something to build off of but it’s frustrating. We need to get a win here; it doesn’t matter how it is. If it’s ugly, we’ve got to find a way to get a win.
On what the team needs to do moving forward: Just work. We can’t take a step back. We laid an egg of a game in Pittsburgh. A better effort tonight, but when you go through these losing streaks, it always seems like it’s harder to dig yourselves out of it, just like when you’re winning it’s easy to keep winning. We can’t take a step back next game. We’ve got to watch the tape and see what we can do better and keep moving forward.
JOHN TAVARES (20:05 TOI)
On tonight’s game: I thought we were right there. We had a great opportunity in the third and we just didn’t maximize it so we’ve just got to regroup and find a way to get it done.
On his third period hooking penalty: Yeah, I just got caught trying to lift his stick. Obviously, I’ve just got to try to be smarter and not get my stick caught up.
On Marc-Andre Fleury’s save late in the third period: It was obviously a great save and a great opportunity. We had some really good looks in the third and we’ve got to find a way to put those in. Give him credit, he made it tough and made some good saves.
On the team’s mindset at the moment: We want the results. We just want different results. We want to win. It’s obviously frustrating when you’re not getting them and I think we’ve talked about resolve and resiliency and trying to stay with it. It’s all we can do is continue to move forward and find ways to get better and get the job done when we have opportunities like this.
Jason Spezza put the Maple Leafs on the board at 7:26 of the third period and later had the primary assist on Zach Hyman’s third period goal. Spezza has goals (2) and points (2-1-3) in two consecutive games. All three of his goals in 2019-20 have been scored on the road. He has three points (1-2-3) in two games against Pacific Division opponents. Tonight’s game is his second multi-point performance of the season.
Zach Hyman scored Toronto’s second goal of the night on the power play at 12:47 of the third period. Hyman’s goal is his first of the season in four games played. In 2018-19, Hyman established a new single-season career-high for goals scored (21).
Ilya Mikheyev had the lone assist on Spezza’s third period goal. Mikheyev has six points (2-4-6) in 10 road games this season. He has three points (1-2-3) in four games against Pacific Division teams.
Tyson Barrie collected the secondary assist on Hyman’s third period goal. Barrie’s assist is his seventh of the season and second on the power play. The assist is his first point against a Western Conference opponent this season.
The Maple Leafs went 0-for-2 on the penalty kill and went 1-for-2 on the power play tonight.
Pierre Engvall played in his first career NHL game.
Auston Matthews was 5-for-6 (83%) when taking defensive zone faceoffs.
Morgan Rielly was on the ice for a team-high 32 Toronto shot attempts-for at 5-on-5 tonight. He finished the game with a 5-on-5 shot attempt percentage of 57.1 percent (32 for, 24 against).
John Tavares won 71 percent (5 won, 2 lost) of his defensive zone draws.

On Wednesday, Browns defensive end Myles Garrett will have the appeal hearing on his indefinite suspension, resulting from removing the helmet of Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph and hitting him in the head with it. Garrett’s best argument comes from the notion that the rules don’t permit an indefinite suspension for on-field misconduct. And that’s apparently…

(6-8) CHARLOTTE HORNETS, 96 VS. (9-4) TORONTO RAPTORS, 132
SCOTIABANK ARENA MONDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2019
TORONTO RAPTORS QUOTES NICK NURSE (HEAD COACH) On the team’s 40 assists … We did a really good job, started early. Even though there were some long possessions early in the game, I thought we kept staying with things and ended up getting good shots even late in the shot clock. Then the threes starting going in like crazy in the second half and that always helps your assist numbers. But yeah, that is awesome to see. So many guys with such big numbers and it was just kind of from start to finish really. On OG Anunoby getting hit in the eye again tonight … I wish they would catch the guy who does it once in a while. That is two games he has gotten hit in the head and nobody sees anything. He jump-started us there in the second half, I don’t know how many he made – four for sure in the third, four threes, I think, and a couple of them were dribble to the left late in clock a little bit. So those were big, I think that helped us gain a lot of momentum. It was good to see, I didn’t think that he played that great in Dallas off the little time off and he was medium in the first half even I thought tonight. So it was good to see him get a boost of confidence there and play so great in the second half. How much of that is OG’s confidence? Yeah, I think it’s confidence, it’s just part of getting out there a little bit. I think … you can remember all those times he’d catch it and always pump fake it and they’d stay close and short on him, so he would still be able to take it again. He has just kind of worked that out of his game for the most part where he is feet are ready and that’s a tribute to him to working on getting his feet and his hands (ready). I always say you have to have your feet ready, your hands ready and in between your ears ready to shoot. He has worked on all of that. On the team’s rebounding… We did talk about it a couple of times today. We said that we thought we had been trying really hard and battling on the glass and coming up a little short on the numbers some games. I said let’s keep the same battle but let’s win the rebound battle tonight. I wasn’t faulting the effort or the attempts to block out or any of those things, the ball was a little tricky a few times in a couple of games and tonight it wasn’t. Tonight we really did a good job chasing it down but it was on our board as a focus. Win the rebound battle and we win the game is kind of what we were saying going into tonight, so they did a good job taking that from the board to the floor. TERENCE DAVIS II (16 points, seven assists) On setting a career high in points… I just wanted to show that I can play in this league, bring energy. These guys handle their business on and off the court, so this is a great organization to be part of. Why was the ball moving so well tonight? That’s just how we play. Our game is based on next action and anytime you get the ball moving that means the defence is moving. That’s how we play and these guys are champions and it works. RONDAE HOLLIS-JEFFERSON (15 points, eight rebounds) On putting a focus on rebounding tonight… It’s big. We got outrebounded last game, so just trying to come out, get my hands on any loose balls and rebound that I can was big for me. As a rebounder, how much is it wanting the ball? It’s a mix of everything. Wanting the ball, being in the right place, going to get it, believing that your teammates will box out along with yourself. It’s a lot of variables with rebounding. For the most part you have to have that will to go get it. How scary is it to see OG get hit in the eye again? We were just joking about that on the bench towards the end of the game, “you are going to have to wear the Bane mask pretty soon just to keep people out of your eyes.” He laughed. It’s definitely scary to see, it’s part of the game, you never know what can happen. You just want to play basketball at the end of the day.
OG ANUNOBY (24 points, five rebounds) Are you going to start wearing the mask pretty soon? I may try it out tomorrow at practice. We’ll see. On experimenting with wearing goggles during warm up in Dallas… I just needed more time. I’ve got wear them for practice first and then see how it goes. How comfortable are you shooting threes? How much more comfortable? I work on it every day, so each day I get more comfortable with it.
CHARLOTTE HORNETS QUOTES JAMES BORREGO (HEAD COACH) On the difference in the second half … I think OG’s (Anunoby) threes made a huge difference. He made some tough shots off the bounce. He hit, I think, three of his threes … off the bounce. Then we couldn’t find any traction offensively, and then we turned it over. So it was a combination of them making shots, making threes, us turning it over and not running good offence, not making shots which led to their easy baskets going the other way in transition. Anything you are able to take from tonight… What I’ll take from tonight is the aggressive team always wins, nine out of ten times the aggressive team always wins. I think overall Toronto was the more aggressive, more physical team tonight. BISMACK BIYOMBO (13 points, two blocks) On the Raptors second half … They got more aggressive in the second half, and I think the way started the third quarter gave them some confidence. Obviously we are coming off of two great games. We’ve got to learn from this one. They are a great team, they are champions for a reason. We’ve got to learn from it and be prepared for the next game. At the same time it’s a learning process for some of our young guys. We’ve got to continue to grow and improve and look forward to Brooklyn. On moving past a tough game… To be honest, we are not even concerned about that. We’re taking it a game at a time. We focus on one game. Obviously this is over now. You watch film, you grow and tomorrow we go back to the gym, we start studying Brooklyn. I think at the same time the NBA has so many games. You play one the day after tomorrow and then you play another one. You have got to catch up fast and I think that is the goal is for us. Focus on the next one and as our young guys continue to grow we are enjoying the process. We know what we want to be and we are definitely working towards the right direction and we are going to continue to work and improve every single day. MARVIN WILLIAMS (14 points, two blocks) What did Toronto do in the third quarter to change the game? I think they came out and asserted themselves. They imposed their will on us and we were never able to recover. Give those guys credit. It’s a really good team. Obviously they are down a few men. They’ve been through the battles and they know what it takes to win a basketball game. We’ve done well this far, but we are still learning. We will learn from this situation for the next time. How do you have a short memory and come out against Brooklyn and be ready? I think the biggest thing about an NBA season is that some nights you’re going to have nights like this and obviously you want to limit those nights. You can’t dwell too hard on them. We have a lot of games coming up. Obviously you don’t want to play like that. I’m sure we’ll watch film tomorrow and clean up some of the things we did wrong and focus on the next game. You’re disappointed because you want to play better, especially against the better teams in the league, you can’t dwell on it for too long because we’ve got to keep looking forward.
