ADDITIONAL TEAM NOTES… • The Raptors will celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary throughout the season. Six games – Oct. 28 vs. Orlando, Dec. 11 vs. LA Clippers, Jan. 28 vs. Atlanta, Feb. 25 vs. Milwaukee, Mar. 30 vs. Memphis and Apr. 10 vs. Atlanta – will see the team in white throwback pinstriped jerseys, and playing on a court which pays homage to the one the Raptors first played on in what was known as the SkyDome. • Kyle Lowry was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games played Dec. 16-22. Lowry earned the honour for the sixth time in his career and fifth time with the Raptors. He averaged 24.5 points, 10.0 assists, 6.5 rebounds and 39.6 minutes while helping the Raptors to a 4-0 record. • Nick Nurse was named Eastern Conference Coach of the Month for games played in October and November. This marks the second time Nurse has earned the honour after he won for games played in October and November in 2018. Nurse coached the reigning NBA champions to a 14-4 record to start the season while facing several roster challenges along the way. The Raptors had eight different players miss games due to injury, including Kyle Lowry and Serge Ibaka. • Nick Nurse coached his 100th regular-season game as head coach of the Raptors Nov. 29 at Orlando. Nurse (71–28) is one of five head coaches with at least 70 wins and a NBA title at the time of their 100th game, along with Steve Kerr, Johnny Kundla, Pat Riley, and Paul Westhead. • The Raptors went 3–2 on their five-game west coast road trip (Nov. 8-16). It marked the first time the Raptors finished with a winning record on a road trip of five or more games – all against Western Conference teams – since November 2001, when they went 4–2 on a trip through Utah (W), Denver (L), Sacramento (L), Golden State (W), LA Clippers (W) and Phoenix (W). • Pascal Siakam was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games played Nov. 4-10 – earning the honour for the second time in his career. Siakam averaged team highs of 30.3 points and 11.3 rebounds in three victories. He posted at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in all three games, and tied his career high with 44 points Nov. 8 at New Orleans. • Kyle Lowry played his 500th game as a Raptor on Oct. 26 at Chicago. He is the fifth player in franchise history to accomplish the feat; joining DeMar DeRozan, Morris Peterson, Jose Calderon and Chris Bosh. Lowry is the longest-serving member of the Raptors – entering his eighth season with the club. His five All-Star Game appearances (2015-19), including two as a starter, are tied with Vince Carter and Bosh for the most in team history. • Following Spain’s triumph at the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China, Marc Gasol became just the second player to win an NBA title and a FIBA world gold medal in the same year, joining Lamar Odom (2010). Gasol is a highlydecorated member of the Spanish National Team, helping the country capture nine medals since 2006. • The Raptors won their first NBA Championship last June, defeating Golden State in the NBA Finals. In the 2019 postseason, Toronto went 16-8 while also eliminating Orlando, Philadelphia and Milwaukee – the top seed in the Eastern Conference. During the regular season, the Raptors won 58 games and set franchise records for points per game (114.4), assists per game (25.4), rebounds per game (45.2) and three-point field goals made (1,105). • Nick Nurse became the ninth first-year NBA head coach to win an NBA title, and first since Tyronn Lue in 2016. He is also the only head coach to have both an NBA and G League championship. Nurse won the G League title with Rio Grande Valley in 2013 and Iowa in 2011. • Since the beginning of the NBA Lottery in 1985, the Raptors became the first team to capture the NBA title without a single lottery pick on their Finals roster. Toronto did have a lottery pick earlier in the year but traded former fifth overall selection Jonas Valanciunas to the Memphis Grizzlies for Marc Gasol. Greg Monroe, the seventh pick by Detroit in the 2010 NBA Draft, was also traded to Brooklyn at the trade deadline.

Raptors Blog: Thompson pegs Lowry as a Hall of Famer — Toronto Sun

That’s a wrap on 2019. If 2020 is half as fun as the previous year was, it will be great. It was a particularly excellent year for Fred VanVleet, but he still said “hell no,” when asked if he was sad to see the year end. Read More

TORONTO RAPTORS QUOTES

NICK NURSE (HEAD COACH)

On the starting lineup change … You guys know that I like to mix it up a little bit, I haven’t been doing it all that much this year and I thought maybe get both of them going – both Rondae (Hollis-Jefferson) and OG (Anunoby) … It seemed like it worked out okay, they both played really well tonight, I liked the energy from both of them.

On getting OG into the small forward position being a factor … Yeah, it did, I think that is an interesting part of it. Out of position is sometimes out of position, and getting him back there and getting him more comfortable. I just liked again, both of them were more focused, way more energetic, they were down and guarding, they were rebounding and when you are like that other good things, you know your shooting, your making strong moves and stuff seem to follow.

On using Rondae to start moving forward … I don’t know. Mixing up the starting lineup here for a little bit is probably something that you are going to see. I am just going to see what it looks like and feels like depending on who we are playing a little bit and go from there.

On Terence Davis being more energetic and not effected by the end of the last game … Yeah, which is good. He is a shooter and we need him to vault up and take them when he has got them and he found some rhythm tonight. I think we got a couple of set plays for him too and he made those, so that’s a good sign. It’s good that he came out and put that one in the past as history and moved on.

TERENCE DAVIS II (19 points, four rebounds)

On bouncing back after last game… I went home and watched the film and really (learned) from those mistakes. Down the stretch I looked at the clock and didn’t really tick in the time and score but that’s to take home with me down the road, just learning from those mistakes.

What does it feel like when you’re on an offensive role like that? Well I see it like this, when I see one go in I feel pretty good. I see another go in, I say okay, then another and it’s just the game of basketball, it’s how the game of basketball goes. Starts falling, you feel good, a good state of mind, actually.

FRED VANVLEET (12 points, seven assists)

On having chemistry with Terence Davis II tonight… I think offensively he’s a microwave, you know he heats up pretty quick. Know where to find him and usually if you get him in a good spot and he gets his feet down he’s got a quick release, so he can get them off, so tonight I thought he did a good of finding spots. Just playing confident and this is one of those games where a guy could find some rhythm, start off really hot then kind of hit the wall a little bit so to speak. I try to look for him to get his rhythm back and get his swagger back.

Do you say anything to OG Anunoby coming off the bench? Not really, guys got to figure it out as it goes. We are all pretty close and maybe too close to the point that we don’t really give each other pep talks. I know I didn’t, at least. You expect a guy to play no matter what position he’s in. He did a good job of coming in, ready to go and played pretty much identical to the way he’s been playing, he just made shots tonight, so that is kind of the cure all in most situations. He made some shots and that’s all that you look for.

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS QUOTES

JOHN BEILEIN (HEAD COACH)

On tonight’s game… Not a very good game for us, credit Toronto for that. They have such a great system that they are playing with. They have tremendous guards who really run that thing so well and they are really sound defensively. We were not good in many areas of the game today, end of the road trip, whatever, we just weren’t very good. I’ve got to watch the video and see what we can do to get better.

What was the most difficult thing tonight in containing them from the three-point line? They had the guys come off the bench with (Terence) Davis hitting the three, and OG (Anunoby) hitting the three and then of course just when you think maybe make a little run, (Kyle) Lowry will make a tough three. Their guard play is really experienced and really good, and it shows. They really have a great rhythm to what they do, they are hard to stop and then at the end of the first half, that last 45 seconds was just, frankly, was embarrassing.

How do you get your backcourt duo to play like Lowry and VanVleet? They just have to get the same experience those two have. They got years and years and years. Lowry was at Villanova when I was coaching at West Virginia, so that’s a long time ago. He’s got a lot of knowledge that I’m sure our guys will have over time. And then VanVleet, four years at Wichita State, led his team to the Final Four and really has earned this thing all the way through and really has done a great job. So those two guys are terrific. In today’s game, two guards like that, despite their size, can dominate and they really dominated the game today. They didn’t dominate our guards, they just dominated the game by making the right play.

COLLIN SEXTON (22 points)

What did you see out of the Raptors tonight? They’re a tough team, a championship team, so you know they’re going to put up a really good fight – and also they lost to OKC the other night so they had a chip on their shoulder and wanted to pretty much beat us. You could tell from the very start of the game that they had a different type of energy. The fans had a good type of energy that helped them tonight.

Where do you want to see the team improve offensively? Offensively? Just keep taking the shots. Making the right plays and doing what we do. I feel like most things come on defence. Not sprinting back, stopping in the backcourt, little things that we can control like boxing out. I don’t know how many offensive rebounds they had tonight, but it was a lot. We have to make sure we help the bigs and rebound. As a group we have to get better. Just get better and hopefully get some wins together.

TRISTAN THOMPSON (14 points, 11 rebounds)

What are some takeaways from this game? That everyone finished the game healthy. At the end of the day going into the new year, it’s bigger than basketball. You just want guys to finish out the year strong, finish out 2019 strong and be healthy. We got through the game, you guys saw what happened, the Raptors are a really good team. You have to give them credit. They play hard. It was their night tonight. Thinking about getting back to Cleveland and guys can spend time with their family because that’s what it’s all about.

On improving defensively… I think communication. Just talking, just have to open our mouth and call out the calls. If we see something we have to holler. Call it out loud and continuous so our teammates know what’s going on. We have to be on the same page with it.

What comes to your mind when you think of 2019 on the court? 2019? Some new faces, young guys getting better and adding some good young pieces. Collin, DG, KPG. It’s good. I’m happy with our young guys. They want to learn. They want to be great and they’re going to keep pushing themselves day in and day out.

On Kyle Lowry… Kyle Lowry is a Hall of Famer. He’s a (five)-time All-Star, Olympic gold medalist, an NBA champ. He’s their backbone. He’s been here since when they drew that charge against him in Brooklyn with Paul Pierce. He’s been through all that. When we were playing them in the Eastern Conference Finals and sweeping them. Then with Kawhi in the Finals, so he’s been through, just like myself, highs and lows, for him he keeps this ship running. He’s playing at a high level. Kyle is a bulldog. He competes every night. That’s why his teammates love him – because you can count on the guy every night.

Only two rookies have played in every game of a season for the Raptors: Vince Carter in 1998– 99 (which was a lockout-shortened 50-game season) and Matt Bonner (2004–05).

Kyle Lowry needs 105 assists to tie Jose Calderon (3,770) as the Raptors’ all-time leader in assists. Lowry is already the franchise leader in three-point field goals (1,284), steals (770) and playoff victories (37). Lowry has recorded 10+ assists 110 times – second most in team history behind only Calderon (141).

On the Road Again: Oklahoma City looks to earn its 11th win in 15 games and sixth in the last seven by traveling to Toronto to take on the Raptors. In December, OKC has earned a 9-4 record and has outscored opponents by 45 points, good for the fifth best +/- rating in the Western Conference. The Thunder holds a 7-3 record when playing the Raptors in Toronto and has won each of the last four road matchups by an average of 11.0 points per game. Following this contest, the Thunder will return home to host the Dallas Mavericks on New Year’s Eve.

Win the Week: Dennis Schröder was named NBA Player of the Week for Week 9 after leading the Thunder to a perfect 4-0 week behind averages of 25.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.0 assists, shooting 50.7 percent from the field and 92.6 percent from the free throw line. He is now just the fourth player in the last 20 years to earn POW honors as a reserve (Lou Williams 2018, Markieff Morris 2013, J.R. Smith 2013).

Dennis the Menace: Dennis Schröder has produced five straight games with 20+ points off the bench, the longest such streak in OKC history and the longest across all NBA reserves in the last two years. This is part of a 14-game streak in which Schröder has scored 15+ points as a reserve, the longest such streak in Thunder history (previously Harden, Martin with seven) and the longest in the league this season.

Comeback Kids: On 12/16 vs. Chicago, Oklahoma City overcame a 26-point deficit in the second quarter to earn a 109-106 win over the Bulls after outscoring them 60-38 in the second half. This marks the largest home comeback victory in Thunder history and ties the OKC record (2/9/19 at Houston). OKC then followed that performance with a 24-point comeback win over the Grizzlies the next game, making the Thunder the only team in the last 20 years to overcome back-to-back 24-point deficits. Two games later, the Thunder earned an 18-point comeback win over the Clippers, the first time the Thunder has ever had as many such wins within a week span. Additionally, OKC is tied with the Lakers for the most 15-point comeback wins so far this season with four.

Bench Mob: The Oklahoma City reserves have outscored opposing benches in 24 of the Thunder’s 31 games, with OKC earning an 1410 record when that happens. The Thunder bench has the fourth-best bench scoring margin in the NBA (7.8), holding opponent reserves to the lowest scoring average (31.3) while ranking second in blocks (78). Also, Nerlens Noel ranks fourth among all NBA reserves in blocks per game (1.26) while Dennis Schröder ranks second in points scored (569) and fifth in assists (115) (min. 20 games). In OKC’s win over the Pelicans on Nov. 29, Schröder (25) and Abdel Nader (19) combined for 44 points as reserves. The previous game, that same duo combined for 33 points in relief, helping Oklahoma City’s bench to a 59.5-points per game average over those two contests.

Getting Defensive: Oklahoma City has earned the second-best fourth quarter defensive rating (98.3) as well as the second-best +/- rating in OT (+22). OKC is holding opponents to the second-fewest made shots from beyond the arc (10.2) on the second-fewest attempts (30.5) and the second-fewest fast break points (11.6) among all NBA teams while giving opponents the third-fewest free throw opportunities (19.0). Additionally, the Thunder is contesting the second-most shots from inside the arc (43.2) and the seventh most overall (64.8).

Need I Shai More: Through the first 10 games this season, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 21.0 points, the second-highest scoring average through the first 10 games of any Thunder sophomore behind Kevin Durant’s 21.9 in 2008 and ahead of Russell Westbrook’s 15.6 in 2009. Additionally, through 30 games, Gilgeous-Alexander’s 19.1 points per game average ranks second only to Durant’s 23.7 and ahead of Westbrook’s 16.3.

Hot Schröder: Dennis Schröder has now led all Thunder reserves in 26 of 31 games. In the Thunder’s first back-to-back of the season on 10/27-28, he logged 22 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals on the first night and 22 points, five rebounds and seven assists the second. Schröder is the first Thunder reserve to notch 20+ points and 5+ rebounds in two straight games. On 11/2 vs. New Orleans, Schröder marked his fourth straight game with 17+ points, only two Thunder reserves have had a longer such streak (Harden, 5; Kanter, 5).

Stealing Olajuwon’s Thunder: On 12/14 at Denver, Chris Paul stole his 2,163rd ball to pass Hakeem Olajuwon for eighth all-time in steals on the NBA leaderboards. Paul already ranked first among all active players. Each player that sits ahead of him on that all-time list is a member of the Hall of Fame (Stockton, Kidd, Jordan, Payton, Cheeks, Pippen, Drexler).

Paul in a Day’s Work: A nine-time All-Star and two-time gold medalist, Chris Paul is ranked seventh in NBA history in assists (9,381) and eighth in steals (2,173) and is first among active players in both. He joins Jason Kidd and John Stockton as the only players with 9,000+ assists and 2,000+ steals. Additionally, in the win over the Bulls on 12/16, Paul scored his 18,000th career point, making him one of three players in NBA history with 18,000+ points and 9,000+ rebounds, joining John Stockton and Isiah Thomas.
On the Record: In the 139-127 overtime victory over the Timberwolves on 12/6, the Thunder had five players with at least 20 points (Paul 30, Gilgeous-Alexander 29, Schröder 25, Adams 22, Gallinari 21). This marks the first time in Oklahoma City history and the first time in the league since March 2004 that a team has had as many players with 20-plus points each (Atlanta – Stephen Jackson 42, Bob Sura 28, Jason Terry 23, Jason Collier 22, Chris Crawford 20).

Ciao Ciao: Danilo Gallinari currently ranks sixth among all NBA players by shooting 90.3 percent from the free throw line. From 10/2311/5, he went a perfect 24-for-24 from the free throw line before his first miss of the season, which was good for longest such streak in the league. Additionally, Gallinari leads the Thunder in three-point makes with 75, shooting them with 39.5 percent accuracy.
Home Cooking: Since arriving in Oklahoma City, the Thunder has always taken pride in defending its home court. Dating back to the start of the 2009-10 season, OKC has gone 305-114 (.728) at home, which stands as the second-best home record in the NBA during this span. Since the 2010-11 season, Oklahoma City has earned 278 wins on home court, which stands as the second-most home wins in that timeframe (San Antonio).
Keeping it 100: In the Thunder’s win over New Orleans on Nov. 29, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander played his 100th-career game. He is one of 14 players with 100+ steals, 50+ blocks and 75+ three-pointers in their first 100 games since threes became an official stat in 1982.
Mind the Gap: On 10/28 at Houston, the Thunder bench outscored the Rockets reserves 52-14. This 38-point margin is the largest for Oklahoma City since 4/12/17 vs. Denver and ranks as the fourth largest such margin in Thunder history. The night before on 10/27 vs. Golden State, the Thunder downed the Warriors 120-92, tying OKC’s largest margin of victory over Golden State. The 33-point halftime edge was the Warriors’ worst deficit at the break since 1997.
Hamidoing it Right: After finishing his rookie campaign with 21 steals, Hamidou Diallo snagged 15 through the first 10 games of the 2019-20 season. This makes him the first Thunder sophomore to grab as many in the first 10 games of the season. Second is Jeff Green in 2008 (14).
Billy the Kid: With Oklahoma City’s 120-92 victory over Golden State, Billy Donovan earned his 200th win as an NBA head coach with a 60.4 percent win percentage. The only other active head coaches to have at least 200 wins and a 60 percent win percentage or better with their respective teams are Steve Kerr (322 wins, 78.5 percent), Gregg Popovich (1,245 wins, 68.4 percent) and Doc Rivers (307 wins, 62.4 percent).
Eight Ball: In the 11/9 victory over the Warriors, Danilo Gallinari led the team with 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and 4of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. In the process, he scored his 8,888th career point. Born on 8/8/88, Gallinari has worn the number eight since he entered the league in 2008.
You can Shai that Again: In his Thunder debut at Utah on 10/23, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander posted a team-leading and then-career-best 26 points, the second-most ever scored in a Thunder debut (Paul George, 28). He is also just the third Thunder player to lead the team in scoring in his team debut (Paul George, Russell Westbrook). He then followed that performance by setting yet another career mark with 28 points against the Wizards on Oct. 25.

Raps get some payback in Boston — Toronto Sun

BOSTON — The Boston Celtics put a bit of a damper on Christmas Day for the Raptors at home with a rather one-sided win. Consider that score settled. The Raptors haven’t always been the most consistent team from game to game, particularly this season with all the injuries they have had to deal with. But […]

Christmas game was ‘bigger than basketball’ for depleted Raptors — Toronto Sun

– It really is too bad that the Raptors weren’t at full strength for Wednesday’s Christmas Day game against the Boston Celtics. It would have been a lot more fun and entertaining for everyone to see two really good teams go at it at full strength (Boston was missing Marcus Smart, its best defender, but […]
