NASHVILLE — No one was happier to see Jake Muzzin walk through the door of the Maple Leafs dressing room here — with his equipment — than Sheldon Keefe.
Putting the brakes on Toronto’s recent skid has proven harder without the defenceman the coach calls “in many ways the conscience of our team.”
“It means a great deal, both in terms of his play on the ice and his voice,” said Keefe of Muzzin’s month-long absence with a broken foot. “He speaks a lot, has great presence, great experience of course. He’s an important part of our backend and makes everyone else better.”
Muzzin was asked — and accepted — a conditioning game with the Marlies in Cleveland on Friday en route here, something maybe other veterans might balk at.
“Credit to him for having no ego, not being concerned about anything other than getting himself as prepared as possible. Talking with him, it sounded like a very positive experience and he looked great today.”

• The Toronto Raptors finish a two-game road trip (Jan. 24-26) Sunday afternoon against the San Antonio
Spurs at AT&T Center. The Raptors are winless in their last 10 visits to San Antonio. Toronto’s last victory
in San Antonio was Dec. 28, 2007 (83-73). The Spurs rallied from an 18-point deficit to beat the Raptors 105-104 in their first meeting earlier this month. Toronto and San Antonio have split the season-series each of the last two seasons.
• The Raptors have won six in a row (Jan. 15-24), one shy of their season high. Toronto won seven straight games Nov. 18 – Dec. 1. The Raptors are averaging 123.2 points and shooting .513 (270-for-526) from the field, including .433 (93-for-215) from beyond the arc, over the last six games.
• Pascal Siakam was named a starter for the 2020 NBA All-Star Game in Chicago. Siakam becomes the seventh player in franchise history to earn an All-Star selection, joining Chris Bosh (five times), Vince Carter (five times), Kyle Lowry (five times), DeMar DeRozan (four times), Antonio Davis and Kawhi Leonard.
