POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On what changed from Toronto’s effort on Sunday to tonight’s game:
Well, it was clear from the start from the first period and a little bit into the second that we weren’t ready to play physically or mentally. Pretty frustrating that the group thought they were going to come into a game and have an easy time against a team that definitely wanted to respond from how Sunday went. As the game went on, we started to find our groove a little bit, a little too late. I did like our pushback and how we took control towards the end. There was a lot of good stuff there but really the game was lost in the first half.

On line changes in the game:
When we’re having a hard time getting things going, I looked to make some little changes or what could help (flipping Pontus Aberg and Mason Marchment). Once that happened, I thought those lines started to come on a little bit. How much of the change had to do with them just realizing that the team needed to step up or it was better chemistry but regardless we started to chisel away. Even in the second period five-on-five, we didn’t give up a lot but still again, first period, slow start, didn’t like our mindset.

On the team’s opportunities on net:
Some guys played strong and got to the net, held onto the puck and made good plays. I thought the first half of the game in our o-zone, we had a lot of turnovers between the top of the circles and the blueline. We either didn’t get pucks through from the point or we tried to force things that weren’t there high in the zone and it transitioned their game. We just need to use more of the zone, we need to hold onto the puck longer, use our possession style to our advantage and use our skillset and we just made it easy on them tonight.

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On what Toronto had planned against Syracuse’s speed:
(Against) any team that plays fast, the work of our forwards to reload, get over top allows our D to hold good gap, our D are holding good gap and are confident with our forwards in their spot, they’ve got to work together as a group of five to deny their lines and deny their speed. (Syracuse) had a pretty good game plan, they flipped some pucks in the neutral zone, they were glassing some pucks, they were just taking off, making it difficult on us tonight.

On whether there was cohesiveness amongst Toronto’s five-man units:
There was too much inconsistency in effort. Some guys are going, some guys are not. We need to be rolling as an entire team and playing as a group of five, relying on each other and wanting to play for each other. We didn’t have that tonight.

On what his feeling was on the team’s play in front of Toronto’s goaltenders:
Frustrating. They’re their teammates, they need to protect them. We weren’t good enough in front of those guys, they owe them big time. There’s been a lot of games this year that they have probably helped them and bailed them out. To let them down tonight is hard.

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On the team’s first period:
I was actually really happy with it. I liked our energy, I liked our focus, I liked our execution of our details. Our bench was really good and we got some looks, so I was really happy with the start. The second period, I thought early on got away from us a little bit. We got in our D-zone, just need at the end to close out some plays a little bit quicker. But overall, I liked our process to start the game.

On Kasimir Kaskisuo:
He definitely made big saves. He’s been playing well lately. He had a good weekend this past week and it’s just one of those nights. I thought their goalie played really well, too. We had some backdoor empty nets on the power play we just couldn’t finish on, so we got our looks. Our staff really liked our process, our energy and a lot of things that we talked about the guys were executing. So, we’ll just build on focusing on the process and not the result.

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On today’s game:
I thought we really let down our goaltenders today. We know they like to shoot heavy from the point. We weren’t strong enough out front. We didn’t protect our goaltenders, our most important guys on the ice. Didn’t get underneath hands, they got some tips, rebounds inside of us, they were behind our D. Forwards need to do a better of job of getting tight, staying in lanes, wanting to block shots. They’re a hard, heavy team. I didn’t think our start was as good as it needed to be. Our first periods have been problematic from what I’ve seen since I got here so we just have to have some discussion, make sure we correct some things and move from there.

On the power play:
It was a little slow and deliberate. They’re taking their time, they’re making the PK feel comfortable and easy. It’s got to be full throttle, shot, puck recovery, 1-2 pass, shot, puck recovery. We don’t make the penalty kill feel uncomfortable. We need to play a little bit faster and we’ll work on it, we’ll get things going.

NEXT GAME:

December 31 vs Charlotte – 3:00 p.m. ET
January 3 at Syracuse – 7:00 p.m. ET
January 4 vs Rochester – 4:00 p.m. ET
January 5 vs Lehigh Valley – 4:00 p.m. ET
January 10 at Texas – 7:00 p.m. ET

MARLIES 3, LAVAL 2: “I thought our penalty kill did a great job. Overall, our D-corps had a much better game today.    POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On today’s game:
Not the start that we wanted. I thought it was very similar to yesterday’s game’s (against Belleville) first period. We gained traction in the second and got things moving pretty quickly there but there were some things about the first, I thought we were playing too slow, I think we need to transition the game a bit faster and the guys came and did that in the second.

On the three quick goals by Toronto in the second period (59 seconds):
I would assume momentum building for us. It gets the other team on their heels a bit, plants the seed of doubt a little bit. Towards the end of the second, they got their momentum back, wanted to make sure we came out in the third and squash that and gain back the control that we had in the second. I thought our penalty kill did a great job. Overall, our D-corps had a much better game today. They really steered the ship for us and they kind of got things going in the right direction. When we transition the way we can at times and they’re leading that for us, we’re a hard team to beat.

On what the work by Nick Baptiste and Garrett Wilson on the penalty kill tells us about the team:
The depth of character in our room – that’s the guys that care, that’s the guys that’ll work hard, they’ll do anything for the team. Those penalty kills were huge for us and they were competing and doing everything needed.

On Kasimir Kaskisuo’s performance:
It’s big. It gives our team confidence to make plays. Every time you have a stable goaltender back there, it allows the guys to breath a bit, knowing you can rely on him. He came up huge for us today. He made some really big saves and gave us a chance to win.

NEXT GAME:

BELLEVILLE 3, MARLIES 2: “The first period, I thought we had a tough start. We let some things in behind us. But once the second period got going, I thought we controlled the game, we had things going our way. Their goaltender had a great game, just couldn’t find the back of the net. But in terms of process and not looking at results, I thought the second and third periods were a step in the right direction for the team.”–GREG MOORE

   POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On Toronto’s comeback after being down after the first period:
First period was tough, we got into some penalty trouble. I thought the second period, we responded really well. We kind of got through it, Woll did a good job and our penalty kill did a great job getting us through those tough 20 minutes and then we had a couple of tough shifts in the d-zone. Gaudet’s line did a really good job of giving us some hard minutes and getting the game kind of going in the right direction. Then we come up with a goal in the shift after that. I thought we got better throughout the second, throughout the third, guys really kind of buckled down. I know it’s the one game on the weekend before the break but I thought their execution and their ability to find their game after the first was really good.

On establishing flow with the number of special team opportunities:
It’s for sure tough and the players depending on where they are in special teams, they’re having a difficult go getting into a flow of the game. The third period was a little better in terms of that but it was tough. I’m really proud of how the players kind of managed that and got through it.

On Timothy Liljegren’s play (1 goal, 2 assists):
Really good. He distributes the puck well, he exits the puck well. He gets our game transitioning in a real positive sense. He makes plays to the middle of the rink, he gets pucks to the right guys and collects some points.

On Kossila’s return to play following injury:
Thought he was really impressive for his first game back for not having played so long. Some of the real simple little plays out of our d-zone through the middle of the rink, real subtle but he makes them look real easy which is what’s special about his talent.

   POSTGAME QUOTES

ASSISTANT COACH A.J. MacLEAN

On the losses this weekend:
I just think we didn’t generate enough chances or anything to the net, really. Our lack of quality in the attack in the third was pretty much our demise for the weekend.

On special teams:
thought the power play looked good today. They were moving it around. There was good movement of the puck and our bodies. But it was the same as what we talked about five-on-five. We just need to generate a few more shots to the net and that’ll be the message going into next week.

On what kind of player Team Sweden will get in Rasmus Sandin at the World Juniors:
A terrific one. He’s smart, moves the puck well, he can skate and defend. I’m looking forward to seeing how he does.

On what he hopes to see out of Sandin’s performance at the World Juniors:
I hope he dominates. I hope he does really well and he gets to play with the puck and he has a lot of success. He already has good confidence, but it would be good if he came back with a nice swagger and just kept things rolling.

POSTGAME QUOTES
ASSISTANT COACH A.J. MacLEAN
On controlling the pace of play after giving up two goals in the first period: I thought for the whole game basically five-on-five, I really liked our game. In the third period we got five power plays, we’ve got to make at least one of those count. That’s really the difference in the game.
On the power play (1/9): It’s disappointing. We know we need better quality in that area and I think after getting this many in-game reps the guys will feel a lot more comfortable tomorrow and we should have a lot better effort in that area.
ADAM BROOKS (1 ASSIST)
On Belleville’s performance: Yeah, it’s obviously a good team. Their offence looks really good. They’ve added a lot of pieces. They’re a dangerous team. We obviously had our opportunities on the power play today and didn’t score and they had a five-on-three and they capitalized on theirs. So, that’s really the difference in the game I think and it’s something that we’ve got to clean up if we’re going to continue to get better and if we’re going to beat that team all year.
On whether a good penalty kill and goaltending from Belleville or Toronto’s lack of execution resulted in the power play going 1-for-9: I think you can always say both. I think you have to give a team credit when you go 1-for-9 but we want to be a lot better obviously. (Petan’s) on the power play now and it’s something that we’re not totally accustomed to. When you throw a new guy on things are a little different. Overall, we’ve just got to be better. We’ve got some elite talent on both units. It’s something that you’ve got to do better than 1-for-9, especially when you have five-on-three opportunities. So, it’s something that we’ve got to clean up and tomorrow against Rockford do a lot better.

POSTGAME QUOTES
ASSISTANT COACH A.J. MacLEAN
On Toronto’s comeback in the third period: The guys just stuck with it. That’s what we asked of them in between periods, said stick with it. Asked them to get a little more traffic on the net, they did exactly that and pucks went in for us. I couldn’t be more proud of our guys, they really dug in at the end of a long week.
On the team’s two wins in their first three-in-three: It’s good character from the guys. Good leadership all the way right through. They didn’t give up. It would have been an easy game to kind of pack your hat and say we’ll live to fight another day but they dug in. They stuck with it. As a coaching staff, we’re extremely proud of them.
On Adam Brooks’ four-point performance: It was really nice to see him get rewarded. I think since he’s been back since his injury awhile ago he’s been really skating well. He plays well, he plays hard, he’s competitive, and it was really nice to see him get rewarded

POSTGAME QUOTES

ASSISTANT COACH A.J. MacLEAN

On Toronto’s goaltending tandem (Kaskisuo and Woll):
It’s been terrific. No matter who’s in the net they’ve been sharp and ready to play. They’ve always given us a chance to win games. Woll did tonight. He did a great job. We just weren’t sharp enough in front of him to get the win for him.

On Kenny Agostino:
I’d say it’s what we expected of Kenny. He’s an AHL veteran. He’s led the league in scoring before. We know he’s a producer and I think in the room he’s been a great voice. He’s a smart guy, very personable. He helps the young guys and everyone alike get along and he brings people together.
