POSTGAME QUOTES: HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE On tonight’s game: “Obviously it’s been a flip of the script here where we’ve had leads and had poor third periods and now we’re playing from behind and having good third periods and finding ways to get points. Obviously we’ll take that, we like that our team has got lots of fight in it and keeps pushing and had confidence in it’s ability to come back in the game and score enough goals to win. Obviously the start is not even close to good enough and it’s the kind of start that you deserve to lose games when you play like that and start that way and spot them three but fortunately for us there was enough time for us to chip away at it and push back. Just loved our finding a way to tie the game and you get the adversity of a late penalty kill and you turn that into a game-winning goal. You love to see that.” AUSTON MATTHEWS On tonight’s comeback: “I think we just got to playing a little bit better. Our start wasn’t very good. I don’t know it just seemed like we weren’t ready to play for the puck drop and I think it showed. They’re a really good team, they have a lot of young, skilled guys that obviously make you pay and they had some luck chances tonight, especially early on, so credit to our guys for staying with it and staying patient and just continuing to fight all night long and huge play by the penalty kill with (Kerfoot) and (Mikheyev) to get us that goal there on the PK and just all around really good effort in the last half of the game.” On the team’s response when Campbell was pulled: “(Campbell) didn’t play bad we just gave up such grade-a chances for them and they capitalized on them. Like you said it’s more of a wake-up call for the guys that are out there playing and not necessarily our goaltender cause we weren’t really helping him out much there at the start.” MITCH MARNER: On tonight’s comeback: “Just doing what we do best in the third period. Forechecking, getting pucks back, getting around the net, just kind of being in pursuit of the puck the whole third period there. But obviously we know we need to do better in the first 40 and that’s something we need to make sure we bring tomorrow.” On his six-game goal streak: “I just find I’m getting into open spots and I’m not afraid to shoot it. I think before maybe I would hold onto it for an extra second trying to find another player or find something else but right now I’m just trying to, when it touches my stick, just if I can one-time it or grip it and rip it.” PETR MRÁZEK: On his confidence in earning a win tonight: “We got the win so like I said before those wins matter and I’m glad that in the third period we scored four goals and we turned the game around.” On being called upon to relieve Jack Campbell: “Those are the hardest for a goaltender to go in but you have to be prepared, you have to be ready, you have to always come to the rink and you never know what happens so you have to be ready to go in and this is one of the nights that I got the call to go in.”

Hockey Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur (22-20-7-3) is New Jersey’s all-time wins leader vs the Leafs. *The NHL announced “a comprehensive update to the 2021-22 regular-season schedule, one that will enable all 32 teams to complete their respective 82-game slates by the regular season’s original closing date of Friday, April 29.” *Jack Hughes was named New Jersey’s 2022 NHL All-Star. The game is in Vegas on Saturday, Feb. 5th. He’ll become the fourth player in franchise history who earned the honor before turning 21-years-old (Kirk Muller, Joe Cirella &Scott Gomez), per NHL Pr. *Defenseman Dougie Hamilton received surgery on his jaw on Jan. 5th, & there is no official timetable on his return, but he did practice on Wednesday &traveled with the team.
NHL Pr announced that Devils forward Jack Hughes was named one of the league’s “Three Stars” of the week (second star) for the week ending Jan. 2. MUTUAL CONNECTIONS Toronto’s President &Alternate Governor Brendan Shanahan was New Jersey’s 2nd-overall draft-pick in the 1987 NHL Draft. Shanahan spent his first four NHL seasons with the Devils from 1987-88 to 1990-91 (94g-134a-228 PTS, 315 GP). Maple Leafs forward Wayne Simmonds skated in 61 games with the Devils in 2019-20 prior to being traded to Buffalo. LAST TRADE The last time the Devils and Toronto executed a trade was Feb. 28th, 2017, when the Devils acquired Viktor Loov in exchange for Sergey Kalinin. DID YOU KNOW The Devils eliminated the Maple Leafs in six games in the 2000 Eastern Conference Semi-Finals, and allowed just six shots on goal in Game 6, after a 3-0 victory at Continental Airlines Arena. The six shots allowed are the fewest in NHL history for a playoff game. DHN TRIVIA Patrik Elias is tied with one other skater for the most postseason points in franchise history (5g-7a-12 PTS) vs Toronto. Who is the other skater? PLAYER NOTES Jesper Boqvist inked his name onto the scoresheet on Saturday &for the first time this season. The Swedish native also tied a season-high three shots on goal (last: Nov 9th, 2021, vs FLA). Forward Jimmy Vesey snapped a six-game skid without recording a point, after earning an assist on Saturday. Blueliner Damon Severson has led the Devils in TOI in six consecutive games dating to Jan. 19th vs Arizona. Severson ranks second on New Jersey with 6 PTS (1g-5a) over that span, while Jesper Bratt ranks first (4g-3a-7 PTS). Jesper Bratt logged his 11th game with two-or-more points in a game this season, after Thursday’s contest vs Tampa on Jan. 27th (0g-2a-2 PTS). That extended a career-high, while Bratt’s prior career-high for two-or-more points in a game for a single season was eight games (2017-18). Bratt needs one more PPG to tie his career-high (4), which was earned in the Swedish native’s rookie campaign (2017-18). New Jersey’s 2019, No. 1-overall-selection in Jack Hughes tied his career-high 11 goals in a season on Thursday, Jan. 27th . No. 86’s next power-play assist will also tie a career-high (6), which was earned last season. COACH’S CORNER “Even in the first (period) we passed (on) some opportunities to get the puck to the net, maybe (could have) look for a little bit of an uglier play, or an ugly goal. It’s hard. We played as well as we’ve played defensively. I just thought we passed up some offensive-zone plays where we had lanes to get it to the net &we chose to pass, &that’s probably the one area we have to improve.” – Head coach Lindy Ruff via Saturday’s postgame on the team’s offensive production BETWEEN THE PIPES Jon Gillies has appeared in five consecutive games for Jersey, after Saturday’s affair in Carolina, &arguably played his best game since joining the Devils. Gillies turned away all 17 shots that he faced after the first period of play vs Carolina. TONIGHT’S PLAYER TO WATCH With the absence of Michael McLeod &his strong face-off presence, Yegor Sharangovich not only helps to boost the team’s offensive production but also contribute in the face-off circle. Sharangovich finished Saturday’s contest 5/7 on face-offs (66.7%) overall &3/4 on F/O in the offensive zone (75%).

POSTGAME QUOTES: HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE On the team’s comeback win: “Our best people made big time plays in the third period but the most important thing was to stop the bleeding defensively. That’s really what we needed to do. I felt pretty confident that we’d be able to score at least two in that period which was what we talked about. We wouldn’t be able to catch up if we didn’t stop the bleeding defensively so I thought we played better that way and then our best players made big time plays and put the pressure on Detroit and didn’t let up so it was a great win for us. It wasn’t a great game for us but a great win no doubt. On changing the lines mid-game: “We were just trailing in the game so not necessarily playing for control of the game anymore. We were playing to catch up in the game so needed to shorten the bench a little bit, needed to change the lines a little bit, so that’s really what I was going for there.” MICHAEL BUNTING On tonight’s game and the third period comeback: “We knew going into the third period that if we were able to get the first goal of the period that we would have a good chance of winning this game and build that momentum on. We believed in there, and we knew were having our chances it just wasn’t going in for us and then fortunately they started going in in the third. On what he’ll remember about his first hat trick as a Maple Leaf: “Just the whole night. It was a fun night to be apart of, the comeback and then getting the win makes it even sweeter to be able to get a hat trick tonight. (Matthews) and Mitch played great tonight and they were a lot of fun to play with again and they made great plays. On that third goal, Mitch had me right before that and I missed it and then he gave me a second chance to put it in so it was a lot of fun and that second goal was a great funnel by (Matthews) and I was able to just tip it in so it went good.” RASMUS SANDIN On his first goal of the season: “I was just shrinking down a little bit, we had the puck pretty low there. John made a terrific pass. I had a lot of thoughts going on in my head there. I had a pretty similar situation in LA and I missed that one so I’m very happy this one went in and as I said that’s John’s goal for sure and he made a terrific pass.” On Michael Bunting: “Off the ice he’s such a fun guy to be around. On the ice, he scored a bunch of times today and he crashed into the boards there at the end too so you never know what to expect from him. He can start a fight, he can do everything so he’s a great addition to our team and we all love having him out here and playing with him.” PETR MRÁZEK On the team’s comeback win: “We did a great job in the third period, we came really hard and put a clinic on out there so I’m glad we got the win today.” On regrouping after the first period: “You just need to stay focused and try to stay positive and do the little things right. Take it save-by-save and sometimes the first two periods aren’t great but after the second period we just talked about it and we were going to come strong and we did

POSTGAME QUOTES: HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE On tonight’s game: “I had no issues with our game today. There are things every game that you want to do better but for the most part I liked a lot about our game today. I thought we controlled the play for most of the game and the only thing we needed to do was score at 5-on-5. We had a lot of chances, their goaltender was good but we didn’t finish on those opportunities so I think that is something we would want to do better of course but our penalty killing was good when it needed to be, our powerplay was outstanding. Lots of good things to take away from the game today.” MITCH MARNER On tonight’s game: “Five-on-five, I thought we did create some chances but we’d like to leave this game with a five-on-five goal at even strength. I thought we did a lot of good things, at the same time we talked about challenging the goalie and I think we could have done a better job even-strength wise but power play was working, puck moving fast, we had guys locked in and getting into spots quickly and we’re really pushing up pucks just getting to the net, having guys there and when we didn’t score getting the puck back quickly in our hands and getting another quick strike to the net.” On Jack Campbell’s game tonight: “He was great. He’s great most nights. He just takes a lot of pressure on himself like a lot of us do and blames himself for some of the stuff that he should never blame himself for. We’re very fortunate to have him in our net. He’s done a lot of great things this year and it’s always a lot of fun to be on the ice competing with him because he’s such a competitor.” Auston Matthews On tonight’s game: “I thought we were really good on special teams. I think we played pretty well … we created lots of chances, had really good opportunities, their goalie played well. All in all, I think it was a pretty solid game. Obviously, we would like to keep it in regulation but solid work by the group to get the extra point.” On his approach in the shootout: “I like to go in with a couple of options, a couple of things in my head. I try to just take what they give me.” John Tavares On tonight’s game: “I think the game as a whole we liked the way we played. I don’t think we really gave them a whole lot. Obviously special teams was huge tonight. I think for our power play though, we leave with a bitter taste in our mouth just giving up that goal. Things were working really well we had good pressure again trying to find another one and I think we were really in sync and in rhythm and reading really well off another and then obviously we give that one up. Even though I think we played well five-on-five throughout the whole game, obviously we leave it up to one chance and they end up finding a way to get one in the third. I know for us, we have to find a way to make sure we’re just detailed all the way through. Not taking our foot off the gas and understanding the circumstances of the game but overall obviously it was really strong, we had a huge impact on the game. We had plenty of chances, we hit a bunch of posts, we had some really good looks all three periods and in the overtime. I think a lot more better things to build upon. Obviously we want to clean up areas we think we can be better in but I think we made some good strides over the last couples days and had a good effort tonight. Good to get rewarded even though not typically how we wanted to finish it.” Jack Campbell On tonight’s game: “I thought the guys played great in front of me. We made it hard on Gibson, I thought he played really well and definitely happy we got two points.” On his 20th win of the season: “Just focus on getting better each day and the boys are playing great. Just a tribute to them and credit to them. We just want to keep rolling and keep getting wins.”

POSTGAME QUOTES: HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE On the play of the defencemen and goaltender Petr Mrázek during tonight’s game: “I thought it was a good effort by all of our defence tonight and our goaltender. I liked a lot of what our whole lineup did. Each line I think gave us good shifts and good efforts, loved our second period and how we took care of that. We took the 3-1 lead and I thought we were really good and in full control of the second half of that second period that was really good. The third period wasn’t perfect in terms of us controlling the play, we’d like to spend more time in their half of the ice like we did in the second. But I thought it was progress and I thought we defended really well. We didn’t give any clean looks really at our net at all and Petr was strong with anything that they threw at him.” On Mitch Marner’s play: “He’s an important player for us so having him back makes us a far deeper team, everybody else just slots in a lot better. He obviously plays a lot of minutes, important minutes for us. Huge goal through the penalty kill, to get a shorthanded goal like that, and to get it to go in, that’s big for him. Those special teams goals are really important. Obviously, we had our power plays early on and didn’t convert and then they get their chance on their power play and we have to get a kill there. Not only do we get the kill but we get a goal so to be a plus one on special teams no matter how you get it done is important and Mitch contributes so much in that area.” JOHN TAVARES On closing out the road trip with a win: “Yeah, nice to be able to finish off the way we did. Like I said, I still think we feel we have a lot more to our game and we can get back to some of the rhythm we had at different points in the year already but no doubt, we just have to keep staying at it and tonight we did some really good things. Great response when they tied it 1-1, big goal by Pierre and grabbed the momentum and the life back and we seemed to just keep it rolling from there and had a really good second period.” On Morgan Rielly’s game tonight: “Yeah, (Morgan Rielly) was excellent for us, as he is most nights. Just a catalyst for us, not just on our back end, but just for our team in general just such a great player, one of the best defenceman I’ve played with. Even as good as he is, and as much recognition as he gets, I still think he’s looked upon as a little bit underrated. He just does so much for us in so many different areas and was great tonight.” MORGAN RIELLY On tonight’s game and holding onto the early lead: “Yeah obviously that has been an important area for us over the past few weeks. I think if you look back at the start of the game, I think there were plenty of good things as there has been lately. You know we jumped out to a lead, and they score, then we were able to respond, that’s a great sign. Then to go into the third with a two-goal lead and like you said just play well enough to hang onto it, it’s good. That’s what we want to do every night and obviously hasn’t been going that way as of late but by no means was there panic within the dressing room about that trend so tonight was a good example of us playing well. I thought Petr played really well and a huge two points for us.” On his goal: “I thought (Brodie) was going to score a highlight-reel goal. Then the goalie made good play. Just came out around the side then obviously just a good pass from (William Nylander) and you know when that happened you just have to finish it so just about everyone else on the ice did that work on that one.” MITCH MARNER On tonight’s game and Petr Mrázek’s play: “I think in the game we did what we wanted to. I think in the third it got a little bit away from us there, but obviously just maintained that lead and keep the pressure on. (Mrázek) made a couple huge saves for us as well. He’s worked extremely hard since his injury to get back and it’s nice to see him come out here and play with that confidence and swagger and help us to win.” On how he feels about his good play as of late: “Obviously good. Just want to make sure I keep trying to do the things I can to help this team to win games. Whether it’s on the kill, power play or even strength. Great play by (Morgan Rielly) there to pressure up zone and put that out into an area for me to skate onto it.” PETR MRÁZEK On his play tonight: “I felt good there. I saw a lot of pucks in the third period. The guys did a great job in front of me. I could see the puck well and they made the work easier.” On how the team’s play helped him: “Well they boxed out really well. I could the puck from the blueline. They gave me the first shot and if there was a rebound, they cleared the puck out, so they did a great job in front of me today.”
