POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE

On tonight’s game:
I really liked the effort, for sure. The system and process and just the intelligence that we’ve played with could improve and that will be the challenge for us this week and we’ve got a long period of time to sort some things out but I really liked the effort today. It was such a crazy game, so many special teams then the penalty kill, we were asking so much of them against such a potent power play that had burned us the night before. We just thought that our guys had really dug in and competed hard. Just watching guys come back to the bench, they’re exhausted. It’s the end of a long week here on the road so certainly happy with the effort and because of that effort, I thought we earned the two points.

On the team’s power play (2 goals):
Special teams, such a factor in the game yesterday and we suspected they’d be again today so to get both units on the board and at big times for us as well to open the scoring of course and then to extend the lead in the third. That’s what you want to score goals at important times. It can and will continue to improve. Again, a long week of practice for us. There’s a long list of things that we need to get better at and that will be one of them.

On Timothy Liljegren’s injury:
At this stage, it’s not looking quite as serious as it looked in terms of not being able to put any weight on it. He seems like he’s able to put some weight on it now but he was obviously in no shape to come back into the game. We’ll get back to Toronto and get it looked at. Unfortunate hit, hate to see those kinds of hits. There was some knee-on-knee contact and there was some contact with his head as well. It was kind of a double whammy in terms of the kinds of things you don’t ever want to see. Unfortunate of course, that it doesn’t get called. The league will take a look at it and do what they need to do but we’re more concerned about Lily of course and make sure that we can get him healthy as soon as possible.

“It’s hockey, injuries happen and you find out more about other guys. I don’t know the extent of this. I don’t know if it’s a few days or weeks or whatever. There’s no sense on dwelling on it. Someone else gets an opportunity. Let’s go.” –MIKE BABCOCK ON MITCH MARNER’S ANKLE INJURY.

HEAD COACH MIKE BABCOCK

On tonight’s game:

I thought the first about six minutes we were all over the place and then we seemed to settle in and get playing. I actually thought it was a good hockey game up and down the rink. We had opportunity, they had opportunity. Unfortunate that they got the second point and we didn’t.

On how Kapanen fared on Tavares’ wing after the Marner injury:

We just put him there, obviously he can skate. I thought he worked hard here tonight. They had some looks. Obviously, you don’t expect Moore to be playing there either, but that’s just the way it is. We had a lot of guys play hard tonight.

On what he thought when he saw Marner injured on the ice:

Well, I mean, what are you going to do? It’s hockey, injuries happen and you find out more about other guys. I don’t know the extent of this. I don’t know if it’s a few days or weeks or whatever. There’s no sense on dwelling on it. Someone else gets an opportunity. Let’s go.

On the connection between Matthews and Nylander tonight:

I thought – [Johnsson] plays on their line too – I thought they were our best line. In the first they were our only line that really generated. I thought they were good, though.

On Dermott getting his first goal of the season after his return from injury:

It’s good for him. I thought he played good today. You know, it’s all part of earning your confidence back, it doesn’t matter who you are when you come back and you haven’t played, you don’t feel exactly perfect. It takes you some time normally. Good for Dermy tonight, he made some good plays.

FREDERIK ANDERSEN (28 SAVES)

On what has enabled him to play well over his last 10 starts:

I just try to be good with my depth and try to read the play a little bit more and be a little bit deeper, I try to take my eyes back when I have a chance. I think we’ve been playing well too. We’ve been playing better and better. I don’t think we had the best start tonight, but obviously we got better as we went on and we were able to get a point out of it.

On Giroux’s slap shot goal in the shootout:

Maybe it was frustration from last time and they ran out of ideas. It worked this time. Obviously, it sucks to lose that way but [Couturier] made a nice move as well.

TRAVIS DERMOTT (1 GOAL)

On scoring his first of the season to cut the lead in half:

Yeah great feed by Will [Nylander], he happened to look up at the last second there and catch me coming in late, fed me with a good pass and I got lucky with some ice open and the glove side there. Nice to be able to contribute like that but obviously not the end result we wanted so back to the drawing board, back to the video, learn from our mistakes tonight but I think there are also some positives that we can ride on and try to keep the momentum going.

More on his first goal of the season:

Yeah, I think that was pretty much the exact same spot I scored my first goal so nice little flash back there – from Willy too — so that was awesome. It gets the adrenaline going even more than it usually is so it’s nice to see the boys getting excited for you like that and definitely makes you feel right back in it.

AUSTON MATTHEWS (2 ASSISTS)

On the club’s resilience after being down 0-2 in the first period:

Yeah, I mean, I think we just tried to stick with it and claw our way back and we were able to do that. Obviously, forced overtime but you really want to get that extra point especially with how hard we worked to get back in that situation. So, just a bit frustrating, but put our best foot forward and get ready for tomorrow.

On if he tried the lacrosse style goal or faked it before setting up Nylander to tie the game:

I tried it but didn’t get it on my stick so just made the pass instead.

WILLIAM NYLANDER (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On the club’s resilience after being down 0-2 and losing Marner to injury:

I thought we battled back, it’s always good if you’re down 0-2 to come back and score two goals. We didn’t go all the way but we’ve got to take that part with us.

On his goal to tie the game:

Auston [Matthews] made a great pass. I was just backside and he put it right on my tape so I just put it in.

On Matthews’ lacrosse style goal attempt:

Yeah, I think he was trying to, but didn’t get it up on his stick. So, it was close but it ended up right on my tape so it was nice.

JOHN TAVARES (8 SHOT ATTEMPTS)

On losing Marner to injury in the second period:

Obviously, it’s not something we want to happen. He’s such a big part of our team, plays a very significant role and makes great plays. Not ideal, but I thought the group responded well and had every opportunity to win it. Hopefully it’s nothing very serious and he’s back as soon as he can.

On what the team did to get back in the game:

I think we knew there was a lot of hockey left. I don’t think we ever felt terrible about the way we were playing. We knew we could just keep pushing and find another level and just try to get through the neutral zone a little better than we did at times and have some good offensive zone time, which led to some good opportunities and the two goals that gave us a chance.

FLYERS 3, MAPLE LEAFS 2 (SO): POSTGAME NOTES: “William Nylander registered the primary assist on Travis Dermott’s second period goal and later scored Toronto’s second goal of the night at 3:58 of the third period. Nylander has five points (2-3-5) over his past five games. He has registered at least one point in 11 of Toronto’s 18 games this season.”

MLS CUP: The matchup

Seattle Sounders vs. Toronto FC

CenturyLink Field, Seattle

Sunday, Nov. 10 at 3:00 PM ET/Noon PT

Watch on ABC, Univision, TUDN, TSN, or TVAS

For the third time in four seasons it’ll be Seattle Sounders vs. Toronto FC for MLS Cup.

After splitting MLS Cup titles in 2016 and 2017 at Toronto’s BMO Field, this time the showdown will take place at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. It’s the first time that the Sounders will host and feature in an MLS Cup final.

These two clubs have set the standard of excellence in MLS in recent years, consistently ranking among the top performers in both the regular season and postseason. They have also collected multiple trophies in domestic cup competitions — Seattle in the U.S. Open Cup and Toronto in the Canadian Championship — and they have regularly represented MLS on the international stage in the Concacaf Champions League.

In the all-time series between these two teams, Seattle has enjoyed the decided advantage, winning nine of their 14 regular season meetings. Toronto have only won in two of their eight all-time trips to Seattle, but both of those have come since 2014. The last? A 1-0 victory decided by Altidore’s penalty on May 6, 2017 that was billed as a small measure of revenge for the Sounders’ 2016 MLS Cup triumph.

MLS Cup History

The Sounders won the first championship bout in their very first trip to the final. Seattle grinded out their first and only MLS Cup win in 2016, taking the title on penalties after a scoreless draw:

Toronto got revenge with a 2-0 victory to take their first Philip F. Anschutz trophy the following year in 2017:

Seattle Sounders

Regular season record: 16W-10L-8D (52 goals scored, 49 conceded)

Regular season finish: 2nd place, Western Conference

The Seattle Sounders were the No. 2 seed out West and overcame FC Dallas (4-3) and Real Salt Lake (2-0) in the first two playoff rounds, before knocking off No. 1-seeded LAFC 3-1 in the Western Conference Final at Banc of California Stadium.

The Sounders’ postseason run was marked by solid play, mental toughness and a steady stream of key goals from their star attackers: winger Jordan Morris, forward Raul Ruidiaz and playmaker Nicolas Lodeiro.

Head coach Brian Schmetzer, who took over as an interim head coach in July 2016, has now led his hometown club to three MLS Cup finals in four seasons on the job after the club failed in its quest to make MLS Cup during their first seven years in the league.

Toronto FC

Regular season record: 13W-10L-11D (57 goals scored, 52 conceded)

Regular season finish: 4th place, Eastern Conference

Toronto FC started the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs as the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference and expertly navigated their way past three rounds of difficult opponents to reach the final. And they did it without star forward Jozy Altidore, who has missed the postseason due to a hamstring, and starting center back Omar Gonzalez.

The Reds were taken to extratime by No. 5 D.C. United in Round One, where they prevailed 5-1 with a four-goal outburst in the extra periods. Then they went on the road and took advantage of two massive errors to oust No. 1 seeds NYCFC 2-1.

Toronto were not done with their playoff exploits, shocking defending champions and No. 2-seed Atlanta United in the Eastern Conference Final on a memorable gamewinner from veteran substitute Nick DeLeon.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE

On special teams:
“Both never were in a good place. Statistically, they were in a good place but we were getting all sorts of luck which is what we were getting as a team for all of our results and in the standings. The reality is we’ve been outplayed the majority of every game we’ve played this season and it’s catching up to us now. Special teams are no different. The biggest issue of course is taking too many penalties. We’re playing against an elite power play today so giving them as many opportunities as we did especially with the game so close in the third period is unacceptable and, of course, our power play is pretty anemic. So, we need to get that fixed quickly. Obviously, Petan and Sandin are coming in tomorrow so those are two first shooter power play guys, that’s a number one centre and a number one defenceman that changes our team significantly so that will help of course but as coaches we’ve got to do a better job to prepare our team and more importantly, we’ve got to stay out of the penalty box … We’ve got to be competitive, we’ve got to give ourselves a chance to win, all areas of our game have to improve. We’ve got a chance to win here and get back at it tomorrow then a long week of practice to make some progress. Clearly, things have not been going well for quite some time. It’s 12 games into the season and it’s starting to catch up with us and the luck that we had in the early going.”
