HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE

On Kapanen providing a spark in the first period:

I thought – despite the score, we didn’t hate our start. I thought we had good legs, we had the puck a fair bit, we had some stuff happening in their end. They got the lead on us, obviously, but I just liked how our team wasn’t fazed by it, we were just talking on the bench that there was a lot of game left and we’ve got to stay with it. We were confident we’d get our chances throughout the game and we did. It started with the power play goal – I don’t think it registered as a power play goal, but it is in my eyes and Kappy finished it. I’m starting to lose track of how many games in a row now for Kappy, but he’s playing at a different level for us right now. It’s making a difference.

On tonight’s performance as the type of team defence he wants to see:

I thought so, especially once we settled into the game. In the early going, especially with the seventh defenceman, we were trying to find the right mix and what the mix is going to be and how it’s going to flow. I think when you go with the seven defence like that you just sort of let it evolve. You can’t make too much of a plan, you’ve just got to kind of see. I think it took a little bit of time for that to settle and that helped our team once we did settle it down. The big thing I’ll take away from the game, of course, is just how we didn’t fold. The last time we came in here the game got away on us and today we didn’t let it happen.

On if Kapanen’s recent play is related to being disciplined by the team earlier in the season:

No, I don’t. I think it’s more in response to him recognizing what’s happening in the season and how important it is and how important the games are. He, like a lot of the guys on our team, haven’t been happy with their play or our play as a team. We’ve asked everybody just to give us a little bit more. He’s given us lots.

On the play of Holl and Dermott:

They did an excellent job. Today, they’re matched up against the Barkov line and, I mean, it’s the entire group doing a job against them, but I think that line ends up off the scoresheet and is minus-2 on the night. That was our greatest challenge going into the game, is how we were going to manage players of that level with the defencemen that we were missing, and those guys did an excellent job. Our whole team did. The Matthews line did too good of a job against them from their perspective, so they had to change the matchup and they got away from it and they mixed it up and got Matthews away from them. The other guys we had playing against them, whoever it was, just went out and did the job. Collectively we played well against those guys, I thought. Dermott and Holl dug in. Certainly Tyson Barrie battled hard and did a lot of good things for us today. He’s been doing what we needed him to do.

On if Holl’s empty net goal is a ‘feel-good moment’:

Yeah, it is. For sure. You’re just happy it gets out, first of all. You get a little bit of breathing room. You don’t really think – just the way it leaves his stick – that it’s going to go in and then you see it curve. It’s funny, those empty nets goals work in funny ways. You can get rewarded and I think sometimes the luck just seems to go for you. Deserved for [Holl].

FREDERIK ANDERSEN (23 SAVES)

On what the turning point of tonight’s game was:

I think [Kapanen] had a nice fight and we really responded to that first period. I think the guys came out and played really hard for me. Got that deficit back and huge credit to them. They played a great game.

On the play of the defence:

I think especially in the second and third period they were unbelievable. Even in the first as well, they didn’t really panic or anything once they got their lead and we just kind of kept going. Huge credit to the guys for evening it up that quick.

AUSTON MATTHEWS (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On tonight’s come-from-behind win:

I think we just tried to stay resilient. Obviously, you get down early in the first, I think you just try to keep your composure and go out there and take it one shift at a time and just claw our way back. Obviously, it came down to the wire.

On what led to his line playing well:

I think we were just taking care of the puck. We were forechecking a little harder. They hold the line well so you’ve kind of got to put the puck in behind them and try and go get it so I thought we did a pretty good job with that. We didn’t force too many pucks. We just worked hard out there and created chances and obviously we were able to capitalize on a couple.

WILLIAM NYLANDER (1 GOAL)

On what led to the Maple Leafs taking over the game in the second period:

I think we got them, they had the far change there, and we were able to – once they got it out – just go right back in the O-zone and spend some heavy shifts in the O-zone, which was good.

On Kapanen’s fight:

When you see that it obviously fires you up and gets you going. It’s great. He’s been able to add a little bit extra to the team, which is great.

On how important it was to spend time in Florida’s end to take pressure of the Maple Leafs defence:

I think our D have been playing great, but obviously it’s great to spend time in the O-zone. I think that’s where we kept their best players out of our D-zone, which helped us a lot.

PENGUINS 5, LEAFS 2 — WHAT THEY SAID: “I mean, it’s frustrating. We don’t think we’ve played this poorly since the last time we were in this building a few months ago. It’s obviously frustrating, but I mean we’ve got 20 plus games left obviously, we need to have more urgency in our game. We’re running out of time and have to start playing some good hockey here and really figure it out within this locker room going forward because obviously you only have a certain amount of games left and we’ve got a pretty tough schedule here coming up.” –AUSTON MATTHEWS.

HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE

On what the process is for a team getting its confidence back:

Well it looks like the process that we want to go through is to just get embarrassed enough to the point where we just really look in the mirror and recognize what’s required for us to be able to compete at a high level at this stage of the season.

On if he is bewildered with recent performances:

Yeah, I am. It’s a different issue again today. We’ve talked about that. It’s been a little bit different each night. So if you had special teams on your bingo card of things that are hurting our group, then you’re happy today and get that one filled. But I think, ultimately, as we look at the different things, whether it’s giving up leads in the third period a couple weeks ago or getting scored on early on home ice or today special teams or what have you, I think the common denominator is just that the overall urgency and competitiveness of the group — I mean, special teams are the issue today, but we get a power play early in the game, we get a chance to take a hold of the game on the road against a very good team and we’re just not there. They’re just competing at a higher level than we are and then they get their chance and they just make it pretty clear what the difference is.

On if the team relies too much on skill rather than hard work:

It’s an easy narrative to latch on to. I don’t think we were relying on our skill or our talent or our work ethic at all today. But it’s not just today, and it’s not everyone either. Some guys are there consistently. You see the difference between a team that’s good some days and not so good others and a team that’s good all the time, no matter who’s in the lineup and you see that in the game tonight, the difference between them and us. They just work and when you do that, then the skilled players are having the puck a lot more and good things are happening and all that kind of stuff. We have to make a decision here what we want to be as a team because we’re going to run out of games.

On how the group finds urgency:

It’s a good question. I think it’s a decision to be made, obviously I have a role to be played in it in terms of demanding it from the group, in terms of accountability amongst the group, all those kinds of things. I think what’s happening here is as the injuries have piled up and as the schedule has gotten harder and the League has gotten harder, the time of the year and how desperate and urgent things are, more and more issues are coming up with our group in terms of some of our habits and details that are lacking and that’s where our team really has to grow. The skill is there, the other part of it has to be there. Without that foundation you don’t have a chance.

FREDERIK ANDERSEN (19 SAVES)

On the difference on special teams tonight:

I mean that’s a big part of the game. I think they capitalized on their chances, we didn’t and that’s usually when a team wins that category that bad, usually they come out with a win.

On his level of concern with the team’s recent performances:

It’s not been good. I think today was good lesson in seeing a team that’s built championship teams and they haven’t really missed a step. Every time they’ve had a guy hurt, they have another guy coming in and playing their bag off with their effort and their detail. Something we can learn from and hopefully we can, like I said, use it and learn from it, but we better do it quick.

AUSTON MATTHEWS (1 GOAL)

Just early we had a power play and they were pretty quick and obviously still sleeping and then they get their power plays and they capitalize on pretty much all of them and that’s pretty much the story of the night. We just weren’t good from the start.

On his level of concern and wanting to turn things around:

I mean, it’s frustrating. We don’t think we’ve played this poorly since the last time we were in this building a few months ago. It’s obviously frustrating, but I mean we’ve got 20 plus games left obviously, we need to have more urgency in our game. We’re running out of time and have to start playing some good hockey here and really figure it out within this locker room going forward because obviously you only have a certain amount of games left and we’ve got a pretty tough schedule here coming up.

On what the team needs to do to move forward:

Well, everyone’s got to take a look in the mirror, and we’ve got to be better. That’s unacceptable. We’ve got to find the urgency, the passion, the love of the game, the love to compete for each other. All of that needs to come. I don’t know why it’s not there. I think sometimes we, like I’ve touched on earlier, when we struggle, we want the easy game. When you play good teams it’s not going to be easy.

On what a hard game looks like:

A lot better than that. On the forecheck, finishing checks, working their D, talking in our zone, quick exits, a way better penalty kill, a way better power play, responding the right way, getting mad at yourself for not performing the right way. Lots of stuff.

Well, we got dominated in special teams. We just didn’t respond very well at all when we faced some adversity. Our urgency just doesn’t seem to be there consistently. I don’t know what else we need in front of us to motivate us. We’re obviously at a crucial point in our season and time of year. You know, we’ve only got so many games left and we’re fighting hard so we’ve got to determine what we want to do.

Obviously, the way that special teams went today really put us in a tough spot. When things don’t go our way, we’ve got to find better ways to respond. We just don’t respond very well getting down a goal, getting down two even though the game wasn’t being dominated on either side for either stretch. We did some decent things early and then we seemed to, I don’t know, either get frustrated with the way we’re playing or feel like things aren’t going our way. That’s this time of year, things are going to be hard. You’ve got to find ways to overcome it.

I would say in part. Soupy played a good game for us today. I thought our team played a good hockey game. You know, I thought we had a really good second period, they pull the goaltender, it changes momentum a little bit and I didn’t like how we responded for that final segment in the second period. But I liked a lot about our third period. Well, it was special for me and nothing to do with the game or anything like that, but just a chance to see many of the people that were important in supporting me and my family through our time in Pembroke and the operation of the Lumber Kings. To have them in the building and have a chance to thank them each in person was important to me. Anytime when I think about the chance for me to coach in the NHL, right away I would think, ‘How can I thank those people?’ I can never say or do anything to really repay them for everything they sacrificed to give me a start and a foundation to be able to coach at that level. But having them in the building was special, and I was happy that it worked out.

On his evolution since taking over as head coach:

I think I’ve grown as I’ve learned about the League and the schedule and how quickly you have to reset for the next day and also how important framing each win or loss or adversity for the team because you have to manage the emotions because you don’t have time to let things fester. You’ve got to deal with things. So that would be the biggest thing and the biggest adjustment coming from the American League, just how quickly the games come at you and kind of relentless especially in this month.

JACK CAMPBELL (25 SAVES)

On if it matters whether the team is playing on the road and at home:

I don’t it does. I think the team plays great no matter what the situation is. Just happy to be here and glad the boys played so well and got two points.

On being 3-0-1 in goal since his arrival:

I would have loved to have kept that Scandella shot out in Montreal so we would have had six out of six, but I think the boys have played really well and we’ve gotten some big points. With Freddie coming back it just gives us a lot of momentum. We’ve got a pretty busy schedule here, so we’ve just got to hit the reset button tomorrow and be ready to go.

AUSTON MATTHEWS (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On Campbell’s play in net tonight:

Yeah, Soupy was great for us. He made some huge saves. I mean, you see him in there and he’s having so much fun. He just loves to compete and loves to battle for the guys, he came up with some big saves and obviously a big two points for us to pull out.

I just tried to wait him out and then saw a little bit of an opening and just tried to sneak it in there so that’s about it.

We always want to come out and have a good start, especially in away buildings and tonight we were able to get on the board and get going.
