RANGERS 5, LEAFS 4 (OT). QUOTES: “I think we’re proud of the way we battled back. Obviously, it would have been nice to finish it off, but I don’t think in any intermission or just coming into the third, we were never discouraged or anything. With the way both these teams play, high powered offences. You’re going to get your chances and we battled back.” –AUSTON MATTHEWS.

HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE

On if his appreciation for the team’s resilience in last night’s game carries over to tonight: Yeah, I think so. Today is even more challenging, obviously. The back-to-back and we’ve really leaned very heavily on our top guys. On the back-to-back, to do it two days in a row like this coming out of the break, it’s a little bit tougher. But you’re obviously very happy that we were able to do that. That’s a big point for us coming from behind like that.

On how he evaluates how often to play the top lines during a game: In game like that I’m more just going off their body language. Over time you get pretty comfortable with how they look on the bench and when they’re ready for their next shift. Maybe something was just in my own head just with the back-to-back and everything. I kind of lost our fourth line there in the second period and we weren’t getting extra shifts from them. The Rangers weren’t using their fourth line very much either. So, I made it a little bit tougher, plus we’re playing from behind, so you’ll be leaning on those guys. I felt it was important to get more shifts from our depth guys in the third period and I thought it helped us get a little extra rest and a little extra push there. But playing from behind is tough. We haven’t done that very much as a team here of late, but we’ve had to here now three games in a row. That’s not a good recipe for us, not a good recipe for anybody. So, then you get a chance to talk about resilience or to be resilient, we’re able to do that today, but obviously we’d like to flip this trend here and get back to playing with the lead.

On the performance of the blueline with the absence of Muzzin: I thought it was fine. We missed Muzz greatly, don’t get me wrong, in more than just what he does on the ice for us. He has a lot of intangibles that he brings to the locker room and to the bench. Talking between whistles and all those types of things. His presence means a lot to our team, so we missed him greatly, but I thought Marincin did well, filled in well. I don’t think any of our issues that we had in the game today were the result of that.

On if he was concerned when Marner was hit in the head with the puck: Yeah, of course, those are dangerous plays. Anytime the puck comes high like that on anybody, it’s tough. Luckily, we were able to – to get him stitched up and sent back out of there was touch and go there for a bit. They weren’t sure if he was going to come back but he not only came back, I think he pretty much sprinted onto the bench and was ready to go. We put him back out there right away and he was excellent.

On why he decided to start the game with Engvall at centre: I’m very comfortable with Pierre as a centre. I have been in my time with the Marlies. We converted him – I’m not sure exactly when it was but it was January or February of last season. We put him at centre for the first time, and he did an excellent job for us there all the way through the playoffs. Then he’s only played centre with the Marlies this season. He hadn’t played, I don’t think, one shift of wing before coming here. When he’s in there as a centre I’m
comfortable with him. I obviously changed it pretty quickly there just because I didn’t like how that line was going early, it didn’t go the way I thought it would. I thought I had to just kind of change that chemistry, they were minus-2 early, so I had to change it up. It has nothing to do with how I feel about Pierre’s ability to play centre, I think he’s good there.

FREDERIK ANDERSEN (32 SAVES)

On the challenge of the Rangers offence: They’re a quick strike offense. They have skilled players.

On the resilience of the group to battle back from behind in recent games: It’s been great. I think, like you said, we keep battling back. Those are big points. And again, another big point tonight.

On the team fighting to get points despite injuries: Of course, we’re missing some good players right now. But, again, we’ve got to play with what we have. I think the guys have been doing a hell of a job doing that. So I think tonight was a good point, but obviously never satisfied with that.

ADAM BROOKS (NHL DEBUT)

On playing in his first NHL game tonight: Obviously, it was a crazy 24 hours for me. You never want to see somebody go down – a couple of guys that I’m friends with and developed relationships with over a couple of years. You don’t like to see them out, but, you know, it was definitely cool to get this opportunity and to play here Saturday night. My parents were here, it was a great opportunity. Obviously, a day I’ll always remember.

On when his family arrived for the game: They came this morning. They were able to find a flight [from Winnipeg]. I think they left at like 6:30 or something early but it was nice that they’re able to get out.

AUSTON MATTHEWS (2 GOALS, 1 ASSIST)

On the game never seeming to be out of reach: I think we’re proud of the way we battled back. Obviously, it would have been nice to finish it off, but I don’t think in any intermission or just coming into the third, we were never discouraged or anything. With the way both these teams play, high powered offences. You’re going to get your chances and we battled back.

On what the team will miss with Muzzin being out with an injury: I mean, everything. I little bit of leadership – well, a lot of leadership, a lot of physicality. He’s a guy that obviously has experience, he’s won a Cup, he holds guys accountable in the locker room. We’re going to miss him quite a bit but it’s a time for an opportunity for other guys to step up in the lineup.

MORGAN RIELLY (13 SHOT ATTEMPTS)

On the recent win streak coming to an end but still grabbing a point tonight:
I mean points are one thing, but I think there are obviously areas of improvement for us when you look at the games. I mean, you take what you can. We’ve got a day off tomorrow and a chance to regroup after the break and after the back-to-back so it’s important we take advantage of that.

On where the team can improve now that they are out of the Christmas break: Lots of areas, I think that’s for us to discuss. We’re halfway in or just about anyways so a chance to get better here. We’ve got lots of hockey left and it’s important we realize the opportunity.

Mikheyev has surgery to repair an artery and tendons in his wrist

UPDATE ON MAPLE LEAFS FORWARD ILYA MIKHEYEV

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ilya Mikheyev was taken to University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey for surgery to repair an artery and tendons in his wrist that were severed during the team’s game against the New Jersey Devils last night. Following successful surgery, Mikheyev will remain in hospital in New Jersey for further monitoring before returning to Toronto. The 25-year-old is expected to make a full recovery but a more accurate timeline for his return will be provided in three months. The Toronto Maple Leafs and our medical team would like to thank the New Jersey Devils and their medical staff and the University Hospital’s staff and hand and vascular surgery team for their urgent care.

MAPLE LEAFS 5, DEVILS 4 (OT) QUOTES: “Not a lot to like about our game today, obviously, but you know, it’s December 27 here and we got two points on the road. So, we’ll take it and get on the plane and recognize we’ve got to get a lot better tomorrow.” –SHELDON KEEFE

HEAD COACH
SHELDON KEEFE

On Mikheyev’s status:

The only update would just be that he’s at the hospital here. He’s getting evaluated. He’s got a deep cut and we’re just going to have to get it sorted out. He’s going to stay here in New Jersey tonight and get evaluated. We’ll have to figure out what needs to be done.

On his reaction to the injury when it happened:

All I saw was him coming off without a glove and at first you just think he’s missing the glove. Then once you kind of get a sense of something more serious happening there and having your players recognize it even before I did. That’s one of the terrible things that you hate to see.

On the risk of these types of injury as inherent to hockey:

Yeah, it is for sure. It seems to be more frequent these days than it was even when I played. I’m not sure if that’s actually the case, but it seems to be. It’s unfortunate. There’s been lots done to try to prevent these types of things, but some of it isn’t preventable, of course. It’s the nature of the game, but we’ve got to continue to find ways to prevent it as best we can.

On the impact of the injury on the team during the game:

The bench was a little shaken at the time and it seemed like every stoppage in play the guys are kind of looking for an update. They’re concerned about their teammate. In terms of what impact it had on the game itself, I don’t think it had any. When the puck dropped the guys were just focused on playing.

On the resilience of the team to rally in the third and overtime for the win:

Yeah, resilience is a good word to describe it. We’ve shown some of that really throughout the last little bit, being a resilient team. Not a lot to like about our game today, obviously, but you know, it’s December 27 here and we got two points on the road. So, we’ll take it and get on the plane and recognize we’ve got to get a lot better tomorrow.

MICHAEL HUTCHINSON (24 SAVES)

On if he expects a more wide-open game coming off the Christmas break:

A little bit. You know when players have a few days off and us having to travel the same day, sometimes it takes a little bit for the players to get into the game and get back into good habits and stuff. You expect that you might see some good quality scoring chances. But you know at the same time the other team is in the same boat. They have the same amount of days off. So, knowing our skill, you knew that we were going to get some good looks as well and we got some good scoring chances and bury quite a few tonight.

On Mikheyev leaving the game due to a laceration:

It’s terrifying. You know, I haven’t seen him or really heard. Hopefully he’s alright. I didn’t really see what happened, but I remember kind of pushing the puck in the corner and he was there. Then all of a sudden, I could see a ton of blood coming from somewhere and a lot more than a usual high stick or anything like that. Hopefully he’s alright. I’m sure we’ll get an update on him in the locker room soon.

JOHN TAVARES (1 GOAL, 2 ASSISTS)

On tonight’s win:

I think first and foremost, we’re thinking about [Mikheyev] and hopefully he’s okay. It was obviously scary there, seeing that much blood. Obviously, a guy that we care deeply about and was having a great night and playing tremendous for us, so thoughts are with him. I think even after that, emotionally, that can hit you a little bit when you see something that can be as dangerous as something like that. It wasn’t pretty overall but we just kept staying with it. I think we know over the last couple of games that we’ve got to tighten up at times but at the same time, I think we’ve controlled play a lot and generated offence. We just have to be smarter with the puck at times and understanding teams are trying to really sit on those counter-attacks when we sustain a lot of possession and we’re able to cause a lot of movement and create chances, we’ve got to be aware of teams going the other way.

On what went through his mind when Mikheyev was injured:

I was on and saw him kind of scrambling to get to the bench so at first, I was looking to the ref to maybe blow it down, but he got off really quick and you’ve got to get right back into the play. You know, it’s on your mind for sure. You want him to be okay and you’re thinking about him. It’s not an easy thing to see and obviously we hope he’s doing okay. I know we don’t have much of an update, but we’re just thinking about him.

MAPLE LEAFS 5, DEVILS 4 (OT) NOTES: John Tavares registered the primary assist on Mikheyev’s first-period goal and had the secondary assist on Kapanen’s second-period goal before scoring the fourth Toronto goal on the power play at 8:15 of the third period. Tavares has goals (2) in two consecutive games and assists (5) and points (1-5-6) in three consecutive games.

Maple Leafs captain Tavares lines up behind coach with plenty of confidence — Toronto Sun

John Tavares loves playing with Mitch Marner on his wing, but if Sheldon Keefe sees fit to keep Marner with Auston Matthews, the Maple Leafs captain is cool with that. “He’s trying to do what’s best for the team and get us to play the best we can,” Tavares said of his coach. “We all […]

Maple Leafs captain Tavares lines up behind coach with plenty of confidence — Toronto Sun

LEAFS 8, CANES 6 QUOTES: FREDERIK ANDERSEN: “(Marner is) smooth, he skates like the wind and then I think he sees the ice as good as anyone in the League. You combine that with the good hands and he’s just a playmaker out there. He can create free space for himself and the guys he plays with are good to help him out as well. He finds open space really well and, you saw today, he’s a special player.”

HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE

Opening Remarks:

Well, everything went exactly as planned so there’s not a lot to talk about.

On today’s game:

Just lots of emotions in the game, obviously. From our start, you’re feeling great. Then it gets away on you and you start to come back in the third and you give it up again. Lots of emotions, but obviously, we really like how our team stays with it and finds a way and everybody goes home happy.

On if the result makes up for some of the mistakes made:

Yeah, it does. We need wins and we need points. Because of the way things go there — you give up the lead and the nature of some of the goals, you don’t feel great about them — but we can’t forget about the good things that we did. We scored seven plus an empty netter. We had a terrific start against a very good team that we knew was going to come — in fact, getting a lead like that probably was not the greatest thing for us in terms of our mindset playing against a team that is so hard to play against. I think it’s part of our growth here in trying to figure things out. That’s partially the reason why I didn’t call a timeout in that second period. I just thought this is a good time for our team to sort themselves out here and see if we can. Whether we did or not, I don’t really know in that second period, but we found a way. Our best players made big time plays.

On how he felt during the three consecutive goals in the third period:

I do a pretty good job of keeping things inside. I’ve been through a lot of these types of games and a lot of different things as a coach at various levels. I try not to get too caught up in it, but it was pretty fun to watch how quickly things changed and how our team responded to that.

On where he evaluates the Matthews and Marner pairing on a line:

I would say we’re still kind of in the experiment stage. In fact, we talked about it after the second period whether we should switch back and decided not to, obviously. It worked out. How it works out long term — it’s not necessarily just how that goes, but how things underneath them go. We’ll have a look at all of that.

On why he stuck with it through two periods:

We just felt that there’s potential there. Something could spark itself and get going. We also looked at the fact that — we just thought there were mistakes made at key times that ended up in our net that weren’t necessarily a sign that the lines weren’t working. I thought there were a number of good things happening through the game, we just had to get rid of the egregious mistake and how we were going to solve them in the neutral zone. I thought that we’d have a chance.

On if he thinks there’s a future for Matthews and Marner as a pairing long-term:

It makes sense to me in a lot of ways in terms of the way one sees the ice and passes and the way one finishes. But we also have a good line — Mitch and [Hyman] were very successful with John there as well. We have to weigh that and, again, it has a lot to do with how things fall into place underneath them as well. We’ll have to look at that. I think if I’ve shown anything in the early going here it’s that I’m not going to stick with anything for too long.

On the Next Gen Game:

I thought the game was outstanding. I think the whole concept behind it is outstanding. I think if we didn’t make a next generation of fans here today, I’m not sure we ever will with everything that was at play. I thought it was great, the kids on the bench were cool, the interviews before the game, it’s awesome and it’s nice to be a part of that.

On what he has seen from the group to this point and what needs to be worked on:

What we’ve seen is that we have good players and we have good depth and we have the ability to set ourselves up to win games. What we have to work at is just dealing with playing with that lead. Playing with the lead is a big thing for us and what you saw today is just – we want to be a team that controls the puck and controls the play. At times you’re going to face teams or situations where you need to change your decision-making, you need to go quicker, you need to get things through the neutral zone fast. Feeling our way through that. I had a sense that at some point it was going to go bad for us and when it goes bad and you’re trying to play like that, it looks bad like it did today. But we still see lots of positives in there that will help us along the way. The other thing I talked to our team about in the third period is just that we haven’t played from behind very much here in quite a while. We were just talking about kind of enjoy that, enjoy playing from behind, have fun with that, let’s see what we can do here. That’s part of the growth as well.

On the decision to start Spezza in the opening lineup:

To be honest, the biggest thing was I had a sense here frankly that with the next generation game and it being a two o’clock start that he would have his girls in the building so a chance to give him a little moment there and it worked out for us.

On the status of Trevor Moore:

Yeah, he reported not feeling well, much like he did the other day. We thought everything was good, but he just did not feel like himself, so we pulled him out for today. We’ll give him some time over the break to see how that progresses.

On what he liked about the Spezza-Tavares combination in the third period:

I just thought that we’re trying to restart ourselves in the third period and kind of get going so I just went back to that same start but then we’re playing from behind and I like Jason’s ability to play up in the lineup and make a play at an important time. Obviously, he’s got a lot of experience and I think those are the types of things that can help us. Because of his ability I don’t hesitate to give him an opportunity to start the game.

FREDERIK ANDERSEN (35 SAVES)

On what was needed to keep battling after the second period:

Of course, just a short memory, I think, is the most important thing. Obviously, a bit of an emotional roller coaster today. We stuck with it then, like I said, we come out really good in the third even though they regained their two-goal lead. We just said, ‘Screw it, we’ll play the last 10 and give it our all.’ The guys were unbelievable.

On if it was the craziest game he has been a part of:

Probably, yeah. I don’t really have anything that could top that off the top of my head but definitely a wild one.

On what makes Marner so effective:

He’s smooth, he skates like the wind and then I think he sees the ice as good as anyone in the League. You combine that with the good hands and he’s just a playmaker out there. He can create free space for himself and the guys he plays with are good to help him out as well. He finds open space really well and, you saw today, he’s a special player.

MITCH MARNER (2 GOALS, 3 ASSISTS)

On if he believes in Toronto Raptor karma following their historic comeback victory yesterday:

I actually didn’t think of that but that comeback from them was amazing yesterday. It was the same kind of afternoon game. I think both teams have confidence in their players and their ability to do what they can. I think both teams stuck to the system and believed they could get it done and they both did.

On Auston’s backhand pass in the third period:

That’s a hell of a play by him, a hell of a pass. I kind of knew — I thought he was going to try something like that and get it over to me. We talked about trying to find that other side of the ice, so as soon as I saw him try the spin-o-rama I thought he was going to sling it over to me. Great pass, great vision and I was lucky enough to put it in.

AUSTON MATTHEWS (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On tonight’s game:

Yeah, I think it was just a roller coaster. A bit of a run and gun kind of game and I think the third period, we just came in, stayed positive here after the second no matter what the score was and went out there and played. Got one early and then just kind of let the momentum roll over.

On how the team maintained its composure after the second period:

I think it helps when you’ve got guys in here with experience like [Spezza], [Muzzin], guys that have obviously gone through a lot in their careers. I think they kind of keep the team levelheaded whether we’re playing really well or not playing well at all. I think, you know, we held each other accountable today, keep each other in check and then obviously, you know, in the third period we had some fun, I guess.

JOHN TAVARES (1 GOAL, 2 ASSISTS)

On the team finding a way to win:

Yeah, I think, no question. A lot of ebbs in flow. A lot of swings in momentum. I think just great job, great resolve by the group. Outstanding. It shows our talent and our depth, the plays we were able to make. Guys just believe in themselves. I think it’s huge. But I think when we move forward, I think we know a lot of tonight wasn’t the recipe for success in the long term. You’ve got to find ways to win. It’s not always pretty. Certainly, I think we owe Fred [Andersen] a lot better than we were in front of him today.

On Keefe’s willingness to shuffle the lines to spark offence:

Yeah, he’s trying to do what’s best for the team and get us to play the best we can and get the results we need. So I think we all have a lot of trust in him and believe he’s doing the best thing for the team. So, as a player, you just try to go out there and do your job.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, RED WINGS 1 QUOTES: “There are always important saves in a game and that ended up being one very early on. I’ve sat on the bench watching Freddy make some big saves early on. This game I tried not to overthink things and just relax and let the game come to me.” –MICHAEL HUTCHINSON

HEAD COACH SHELDON KEEFE

On what went into tonight’s win:

There’s a lot, obviously. We got the saves early, we clearly needed that. And then we just needed some time to find our game. This is a tough game today. There’s a lot of mental challenges and hurdles for our team coming into the game. You look at the fact that we’ve been rolling pretty well as a group and how the game went against Detroit last time we played them. We’re playing back-to-back, they’re here fresh and haven’t played since Tuesday. A lot of different things there. Then you’ve got the [Hutchinson] and the back-to-back factor, all that stuff. There’s a lot of things there for us. Obviously, we didn’t like how we dealt with it early, but once we found our game – in particular in the third period – I thought we were looking good.

On getting Hutchinson his first win:

It’s huge. It’s huge, of course, and all the attention will be on Hutch and I recognize, of course, why that has been a story. But, it’s also for our group. It’s not just Hutch that hasn’t done well in these games. Our team hasn’t done well in these games. It’s important for us to get a good result. In particular, with how it went in the third period especially, a lot of good things for us there that hopefully we can move past this whole thing for us now and it becomes any other game the way that it should be.

On what led to shuffling lines in the second period:

I just felt we kind of needed to mix it up a little bit and try to just change the chemistry and try to spark something and try to accept the rhythm of the game.

On if there were things missing from Kapanen and Nylander’s performances when they got less ice time in the second period:

Yes, there was. That line I just thought they didn’t get much going offensively. They were getting stalled in the neutral zone a lot. Also, I just didn’t really like the other lines and how things were moving so I just wanted to mix things up. I thought we got some really good shifts in that second period from the Gauthier line. I just kind of shortened things up and some guys didn’t play as much as others.

On if moving Marner and Hyman to Matthews’ wing was in the back of his mind or a spur of the moment idea:

I’ve got a number of things that are in the back of my mind all the time. It just kind of felt, like I said, like the Matthews line was getting stalled. I thought the Tavares line was doing fine. The Matthews line didn’t have much going on and I wanted to give Matthews a chance to get going and try to change that chemistry a little bit. I thought that with Mikheyev and Engvall with Tavares — I thought I could still trust that group playing against the Larkin line just fine. It worked out for today.

MICHAEL HUTCHINSON (29 SAVES)

On a making a couple big saves early to set the tempo:

It was big. There are always important saves in a game and that ended up being one very early on. I’ve sat on the bench watching Freddy make some big saves early on. This game I tried not to overthink things and just relax and let the game come to me. Like I said before the game, I feel like I’m in a good headspace right now, so I came in relaxed, waiting for the game to come to me. Once you do that the team that we have, once we have a little momentum going, we’re a tough team to stop. I was fortunate enough that I thought the guys played great, big blocked shots, we were back-checking and making them earn their chances and I was able to make some stops and in the third period we were able to open it up a bit.

On some of the challenges he faced earlier in the year:

It’s a challenge. I think I was doing a good job about it. Getting sent down is always difficult so then regaining and getting back into that good headspace is a process and you can’t do it on your own. It takes conversations with a lot of people. Steve [Briere] and I have a good relationship so it’s good to talk to him about things. There are other people in the Leafs and Marlies organization that you’re able to talk to openly and honestly and get yourself back into that good headspace where you’re able to feel good about yourself and feel positive and ready to play at your best when you get that opportunity.

ZACH HYMAN (2 GOALS, 1 ASSIST)

On if he thought his first goal was a goal prior to the review:

I thought it was going to be a penalty shot when they called the trip, so I didn’t see it go in or anything like that. Then I heard the buzzer and I’ve got a chance and then they called it a goal. I was happy, obviously.

On his backhand goal in the third period:

Yeah, it was a great way by Auston, kind of delaying and buying time. Then I was able to get some speed on it. I thought I was by myself there, so I just wanted to throw the back hand on net, and it went in.

MITCH MARNER (2 ASSISTS)

On the decision to switch up line combinations during the game tonight:

I think just the first period we were controlling the puck but making some careless plays and making some bad changes. We weren’t really playing too smart with the puck, but I think in the second and third we got control of it. In the second I still think we were a little reckless with it but it’s a big win for us. [Hutchinson] played great behind us there tonight so big credit to him.

On what playing with Matthews can do to opposing defences:

Hopefully scare them, I guess. We want to be a line that’s out there and that holds the puck and creates a lot of offence but, at the same time, we want to be responsible with that puck and make sure we’re responsible in our D-zone, covering our guys, getting back, helping out and not taking too long of shifts. Thought in the second and third we had good puck movement together, I thought we created a lot of offensive chances. It was a good game for us.

AUSTON MATTHEWS (2 GOALS, 1 ASSIST)

On Hyman scoring his backhand goal after being switched onto his wing:

I thought I was playing with Patrick Kane out there down the left wing. I don’t know, I think so far in the month that Sheldon [Keefe] has been here, he’s got a pretty good feel for the game and doesn’t mind switching things up. I think as players you don’t mind to see that if maybe something’s not working on a particular night to switch it up and see if you can kind of get something going. Tonight it worked.

On how it feels to get a win for Hutchinson:

It felt great. I mean, he made some unbelievable saves, especially early on in the game, they got behind us there — a couple breakaways — and then the second period, we were just not taking care of the puck in the neutral zone. He stayed with it. He made some big saves for us and I think everybody here is extremely happy for him. Obviously, you could hear the crowd chanting his name. It was just an awesome moment for him and an awesome moment for everybody.
